@Ron Booker I'm happy you have found something that works for you. MC-909 is still a great platform...I actually first cut my teeth on an MC-505. Your points of criticism regarding cost of development, manufacture, branding, etc are not entirely correct. There's a lot that goes into a product's sticker price. I worked at Elektron throughout the entire development and launch of this product.
If you changed the no of steps of the second track say to 7, set the master pattern counter to infinity, then the locked parameters would occur polyrhythmicaly which would be even cooler :)
I don’t understand why can’t you just copy the trig page from T1, paste it into T2 then apply plocks from there? Is it because it won’t stack the t2 voices?
You could put two different conditional trigs for instance. The note data could be with probability and the other trigless data could be with fill (like in the video)
VERY helpful video. I will also call this "trig layering." It was very magnanimous of you to mention the other things people have called the technique, but they got increasingly more self-aggrandizing and less descriptive as the third-party list went on. If I were as comfortable with the Digitone sequencer as I became with my first, or am becoming with my DAW's sequencing, the funny names would appeal to me. But I'm just fighting to get my head wrapped around these deep features in whatever time I can spare, so your descriptive name wins, hands down. Nice tutorial, first time I've seen a more "advanced" quirk demonstrated.
This is my 2nd maybe 3rd time around seeing this tutorial and I’m now advanced in my understanding of all thins Elektron so now I understand Very cool....I’m going to put this in my Digitone Fav bookmarks and reference it. Thank You for creating sharing
Some really helpful ideas in a clear but relaxed style. Have had a Digitone for a while and know my way about it quite well but haven't use layers yet. I can imagine uses for building variations and improvising. Thanks for putting this together!
Liked. Subscribed. Is there anyway to access the Digitones Sound Pool from another device? For instance the Octatrack. I already synced them but I haven't got into program/bank changes yet..
Thank you for subscribing! As far as I know program change messages sent by another device and received by Digitone will change the PATTERN, not the sound/patch. Each Digitone pattern contains a kit of 4 different patches and all your effect setting, etc. It's very helpful in live performance. Why do you want to change patches from Octatrack instead of just navigating and loading patches right on your Digitone?
dude!! that was so clear & thorough & incredibly helpful to any digitonehead, but especially to a noob like this one right here. I can't thank you enough. bravo!! like? absolutely!! subscribe? heck yeah!!
@@rhythmdroid oh, man... yes, please!! I just got it a week ago &... well, I'm a bit of a slowburn... too many drugs back in the 60s (even though I was born during disco). ;-) I would love another vid like this one, man. but with or without another, I do greatly appreciate your efforts here, sir.
wow - I own mine only for some days and it's real fun to play with it, but this are some very cool tipps! thank you! it's very interesting to see, how much the music depends on the instruments - the Digitone really lets me get into the offbeats, ghostnotes a.s.o. because of the trigger notes (and of course the limitation of polyphony) - but so it holds on to a very transperent sound... I like it!
I'm still such a noob, only got my digi a couple months ago and it's my first big synth after only really owning the elektron Models and some volcas, and i barely understand the digi on a surface level yet. This is very inspiring lol I can't wait to get home from work and play around
Nice video! What's the advantage to this method over just copying the pattern from T1 over to T2? I guess just the fact that you can actually stack? Because while all the things done were cool, I'm not sure I saw much of a need for one method over the other except for when I first heard the stacked sound at 1:51.
Hey good question! You are correct, stacking normal note trigs is not really a special advantage...but adding parameter locks that contain no "note trigs" is the point here. It's like having a separate "parameter automation lane" for one of Digitone's tracks. And thanks to the Elektron sequencer's handy conditional programming, those parameter locks in the so-called automation lane can be probabilistic, or triggered only in fill mode, etc etc
Good question! The "layering" function on DN is slightly different than the poly assign functions on AF/AK...so it is not possible AFAIK. Although with an AF MKII you could send CV out using the CV track, and feed that back into a CV input and modulate a synth parameter that way, thereby giving you an "separate track" for parameter automation.
I'm confused, and a future digitone owner, didn't I read in the manual that you can add a trigess lock even to a step that already has a trig? Did I read it wrong or could you do this on track 1? Thanks
i dont have the Digitone but a Trigless Trig is exactly what its name implies: It doesnt trigger the Track Sound and it doesnt trigger the Envelope or the LFO by Default (you can change the latter behavior though). It triggers Parameter changes. A regular step always has that trigless trig built in - if you want to see it from that perspective. However: If you want a Sound to be triggered on a particular step all the time - but if you dont want to change, lets say, the Filter frequency for that very same Step every time - this method is most likely the only way to do it. Because a Trig Condition on a regular step will influence the Sound triggering as well. This method only influences the parameter changes. Nice thing to have, but most likely not usable all the time since you run out of Tracks on that Digitone quite fast that way ;-)
umonox oh so like if you want to override the parameter lock you've already put on your note trig? I understand what a trigless trig is but that's not the question, the manual uses the word lock trick and says that you are able to add one on top of a note trick on the same step and same track. So I'm trying to understand if that's true or not cuz someone this video is layering Tracks to get the same effect , but according to the manual you should not need to use two tracks to layer. So I'm just trying to understand if I misunderstood or if this is unnecessary? Not saying that it's stupid I just want to understand how the trig locks (func + trig) work
If you have any feedback or questions, just leave a comment!
@Ron Booker those are two totally different machines

Hey man ! What kind of advantage do you see in this method? I am just curios because I may just not get it 😁
Great to know someone else with the digit one out there. Both tips were new to me. Kudos... I have subscribed,,,,
LOOOOL the gothenburg escape contingency..
In all realness this tip is crazy good
Thanks bud! I love your vids.
I’m still surprised how many people don’t utilize the fill function
@@modularmountain3910 Lotsa hidden stuff in Elektron machines
I do love how you get right into the video, content instead of 2.5 mins of blah blah blah. Def subscribing

TOTALLY!

I think it's all about the trig conditions- two sets, one for note patterns and one with fill or probability for Plocks.
This has got to be my favorite Digitone tutorial on YT, any chance of you making anymore?
we neeeeed more!
We really need more!
For real more
Yess please more! 😉🙏
Looks definitely cool but what|s the advantage

Best intro to a tutorial...LMAO...this is a huge game changer....thanks!
Thank YOU Howard. Have fun!
Thanks for this tuto man, really interesting !
The pleasure is mine. More videos coming, so please subscribe and click the bell : )
Real good stuff. Never knew what "layer" was. Thanks!
straight to the point and no waffling - decent example to use it on too - thanks
the faint glow around your Digitone screen makes it look even more futuristic and space age than it already is
WOOOOOOOOOOW MY GOSH!!!! IT'S INCREDIBLE!
Do more videos you funny bastard!
Great technique! I love how the Digitone has all of these nice little hidden features.

that was a good one thank you a lot
That’s mad!
legit said wow about mid way through, very cool stuff
Hey! Thank you = ) Glad it's helpful for you.
shame it doesnt werk with the arp.
That's like having 1 scene on octatrak
Scenes will do the fill trick near the end but will not do the conditional p-locks which to me is the coolest part.
Thank you
🤯😄
Can you still write on track two?
absolutely
Genius
Please make more tutorial about digitone. This is súper cool
Subscribed. Mad tip! If you can also do a tut on the Sound Multimap, would be fab.
this is the best video i have seen of the digitone, thanks
Dang! This is soooo useful

great from a newbie in 2020! thanks!
i still don't really get it
me neither. everything you demonstrated could have just been mimicked by just using track 2 normally. no?
I suppose you gained a fancy fill mode at the expense of being pattern slaved to trk1 ...
Clever. Thank you 🙏
