    You have been blessed to find a man like Patrick. He is a wonderful craftsman and deserves to be rewarded by you and our Lord. I just can't imagine taking on a project so complicated. Thank him for me. I'm 82 years old and love working on boats, but this project is for a young and skilled man like Patrick.

    All in all a damn fine job! Only a few areas I would have done differently 1) used layered glass over all grid boxes 2) used layered glass to tie the keel plate, grid and hull together. 3) I would have used 3M 5200 in attaching the keel to the hull vs. the Sikaflex. Final mark on: A very proper job done by an artist. I need to make a retraction on a much earlier comment I made regarding the BUFA bonding paste. I thought Patrick was going to use the BUFA to attach the keel. He used the BUFA to fill in any unevenness between the hull and keel a very proper thing to do. The BUFA in this application was spot on. Final mark: A very proper job done by an artist.
    As far as your work Chris, you get a passing grade. Not bad for a novice. I know your skills will grow. You own a boat, you have a project to do. That is just a fact of boat life. Don't fight it, embrace it. After this summer of boat living, I can see in your future a project involving solar panels. A glorious project involving Lithium-Ion batteries. A wonderful project involving a world wide sail. You wife has a few project items on her list. She does not know she has a list at this time, but soon she will.
    Please remember when sailing there is only one thing you can control: "The time you leave the dock".
    Think of that sweet moment when you leave the dock, point to the wind, get the sails up, and here it comes that "moment when you turn off the engine and give your boat to the wind".
    Be happy, be safe.

    • @SailingAurora

      Hi Larry, thanks very much for the comment. For sure there are so many different techniques while building/repairing a boat and I have learnt a lot during this whole process. Some good points you have there with what you would have done.
      I think I will always see myself as a novice too as there is so much to take in and I think I will be learning with sailing until the day I can't do it anymore but it's very full-filling.
      Some solar panels have already been installed but it nowhere near enough to sustain for cruising, we would need to build an arch, along with that would come davits. I am already eying up some lithium batteries also but we will wait until we have killed off the AGM's a little more first.
      We are definitely looking forward to that moment when we leave the dock. At the moment it's looking a little far away but we will get there. Once again thanks for writing to us. Cheers, Chris and Tanja

Hope you can find an alternative way to paying the bills without having to "share" her ever again! Duckbill, I think they're called , non return valves a foot of so away from your bilge pump is a good idea , not only is it a safeguard against the obvious it also stops a discharge pipe length worth of water running back into the bilge when the pump shuts off . They're also cheap .

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  3 роки тому

      I did look into it but I put a U bend on the pipe and will probably install a anti syphon valve also. This way I can keep the flow rate up

  • @topc9858

    My experience with sika is that you should only use it if butyl is not an option. For example for the keel sika is what you need, but for the cockpit table you should use butyl tape. It will not clue the table in and you can get it out - if something happens..... Check out Saillife - Mads is a big fan of butyl tape. Great stuff on the repair - it looks really nice.

    • @topc9858
      @topc9858 3 роки тому

      Chris - will you have a non-return valve in the bilge pump? When the hose is long it can start to take water in without a non-return valve. The drain is not under water normally, but when you heal over it is. Thanks again for the videos.

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Topi, true that with the buyl tape, I love Mad's channel also. I was tempted but at the same time the sika is not going to be that hard to cut away, it will also give the table a little extra support as a lot of weight can be on it from people while on a tack.

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  3 роки тому +1

      There was an option for a non return valvee but it limits the flow, I still can fit it but will leave it off for now. You are welcome, glad you are enjoying the videos, more to come soon. Thanks for the comment

    "It's week 8 and we are back to snow again" is rather surprising. I have had sunny weather most of the week here on the south side of Stockholm. I guess it is a bit colder up there.
    Though, smart move on choosing the display, going with one with an external plug pack and just using a DC-DC converter is going to save in a fair bit on overall efficiency.
    I would personally not worry too much about the display hogging up tons of power. Most screens aren't drawing more than 20 watts when active, and usually less than 1 watt in standby. (most of the standby power comes from the plug pack itself. Converting 230 to 19 volts is fairly "inefficient" when dealing with small loads.)
    Though, been a bit curious to the 5 volt USB outlet up in the cockpit, seeing as you have just used a pair of wires going straight to it, I would recommend using a small buck converter module so you can run 12 volt up to it, and then get better output current without needing to worry as much about voltage drop over the cables. Minor issue in my regard though.

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  3 роки тому

      HI there, sorry I didn't see your comment before, for some reason UA-cam didn't filter properly. Yea it was fairly cold at that time in Stockholm.
      The monitor has been great actually and the power consumption coupled together with the Raspberry Pi has not been too bad at all. As for the USB socket, I took a 12v cable from the back of the boat and the unit itself takes 12v down to 5v, I think it was 5amps max for 2 sockets, so charges things pretty quiick. Thanks for watching

    • @todayonthebench
      @todayonthebench 3 роки тому

      @@SailingAurora Sounds like a decent setup. And yes, a raspberry Pi tends to sip power when idling, not that it is all too power hungry when working.
      And yes, 5V at a handful of amps tends to be fairly decent for most devices. And to be fair, one might not need more than that for most realistic scenarios up on deck.
      Also nice content, hope to see more in the future.

    I get the whole lemons to lemonade angle, but I've learned a somber lesson here: never allow someone else to captain your boat. Especially after seeing the effects of other boats that were grounded, and deciding to do it anyway. Imagine: all that time could have instead been spent sailing and learning. Good luck.

  • @SailingOTR

    Would I be correct in assuming that the bulk of this work was paid for by insurance?
    If one had to pay out of pocket for a repair job of this magnitude it seems likely the cost would be impractically prohibitive?
    In any case it was a fine example of a job well done and showing that a repair can often be better than the original build.
    Good fortune on your future sailing plans.

    is there a reason they wouldn't rub Ranex on the exposed steel on the keel - Ranex is phosporic acid and converts rust and the steel to a layer of ferric phosphate (no more rust) some vintage car restorers use this to prevent rust

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  2 роки тому

      I did this before when working with the keel, in this case it required a light grinding anyway to get a good key into the surface to put epoxy on. Of course when you grind, there is no more rust and it's in a. dry environment before applying the epoxy.
