    Great video..🙏. Yeah, I had a 79 model bought from Heritage Marine. I liked it so much I bought the company from Dean Wixom and built 462 NorSea 27s under my company NorSea marine here in Dana Point, CA. We did make some changes. First I’ll say 14 Norseas have Circumnavigated. Many 100s of voyages to Hawaii, Europe, the Mediterranean, south to the Americas, some have made triple Atlantic crossings. We would build 20 at a time with 25 employees. For 40 years. Being retired sucks. We did make many changes after 1980. Different seating up front, mostly Yanmar 2GM 20 hp engines, more ballast (3000 pounds standard) I switched to vinyl-ester resin, LeFiell painted spars, I kept Monitor busy with probably 250 Windvanes, 3 axle trailers, better electronics, stellar wood working. Etc. The last boat we built was $160,000. Every boat that left my factory was ready for a Boatshow. I will say I miss the designer Lyle C Hess who was a great man. When he couldn’t drive anymore I’d pick him up and take him to work with me so he could sit around and smell the resin and teak sawdust. Great channel you two. Keep it going. Bob Eeg 🙏

      Hello Bob! We are so honored you watched our video! And thank you for adding in these details not only about the boats and the changes made, but also about their prowess on the open seas. How cool! Like I said in the video, neither Canadian Ken nor I had ever been on one of these beautiful sailboats and the one we saw exceeded all expectations. They are truly gems. And what a great image of Lyle C Hess watching his vision come to fruition and absorbing the sights, sounds, and smells. We can't thank you enough for your comments and for watching!

    I learned to sail in Dana Point on a MacGregor Venture 21, 1969 vintage. Sailed it over to Catalina Island from there, and up and down the southern coast of California.
    I remember some people were stunned that I sailed it over that far. Like 40 miles or so I think. That NorSea is a cool boat, and at that price, a person on a very very minimal budget could head out across the oceans, and see the world. Nice video, thanks for taking the time to do it.

      It looks like a really beautiful area. That’s definitely a haul out to Catalina, but probably a blast. And you probably saw many whales. Thanks for watching and really appreciate the comments!

      I also took sailing certifications from Aventura in Dana Point, and sailed to Catalina Island on a 32 footer with friends to do their SCUBA certification. Great area, great memories. Later had a first date with my now-wife of 36 years, on one of those sailboats.

  • @jamesbaldwin7676

    My wife and I sailed our Venture 17 to Catalina and got married outside, overlooking Avalon Harbor. The taxi driver was our witness. Today we live on a Down Easter 38 and still sail to the Island regularly.
    I understand that a few of these Northsea 27s were finished in the Downeast factory?
    We've got the same cockpit grating and Sayes Wind Vane Steering too.
    The Northsea is definitely a classic piece of plastic, although the 8' beam can't help but produce a rolly ride. These boats are perfect pocket cruisers, especially for single handers, although water and fuel tanks, are rather small.

    The Nor'sea 27 is on my bucket list for sure ... I'm glad that you toured a center cockpit, as it was the more popular design. Interestingly enough the aft cockpit has a high protective coaming that they left off of the center cockpit design -- not sure why they did that. The price is right on target for the market ... I've been watching three others (all around the same vintage)and they are all going for between $25k - $30k (two include the trailer). Keep up the great work on the boat tours -- not enough channels do that any more, and if you don't introduce people to these great older models, they will unfortunately be relegated to fall into disrepair and neglect as many of the original owners age out of sailing.

      Hi Robert! Thanks, as always, for your thoughtful comment. I was so impressed by this boat. I had read a lot about them but had never been on one and I simply loved it. That’s interesting, re: the cockpit coaming…interesting decision they made. It did feel nice and secure in there, though. We love finding these awesome older boats. Seems Maine is a hotspot for them. And it’s such a pleasure seeing these well-kept ones. Clearly they have been loved. Hopefully we can keep the fun boats coming!

      You all are right. I had cranked out and tuned standing rigging for years and agree with the previous two comments. I have sailed and experienced dismasting during a race. It is ideal to have the vessels owner inspect the swedges and hoist an experienced light weight up the mast to inspect all the same, swedges, tangs, plates, etc. whenever reasonable. Sitting out on the saltwater watching all the other boats continue while your busy lashing the stick in place to motor back to your slip, ramp or worse, having to radio the harbor master for a tow.

    I worked for Heritage Marine in 1977, which was owned by the Wixom brothers, and built the boats in Signal Hill, CA in 1977, they are really well-built boats. Lyle Hess based his boat designs on Bristol Pilot Chanel cutters, which would sit off the coast of England and wait for the great sailing ships loaded with cargo and sail over to them to drop off a local pilot, who sailed the ship into the harbor. The boats had to be fast to beat other pilot boats and able to stay out in any kind of weather. They had to be easily single-handed as a young boy would sail them back to port after all the pilots were dropped off. Lyle Hess also designed Lynn and Larry Pardey's second boat the 28-foot Taslin that Larry built out of wood. I got to be aboard it at a Newport Beach wooden boat festival and meet the Pardeys.

As a yacht broker in Auckland New Zealand I have just sold a small well founded 30 foot yacht to a young couple getting into yachting for the first time for very little money . The industry is not helping young buyers to get into these older smaller yachts , too much focus on technology and the desire for yachts that are too large . I can see myself standing at the stove rustling up a late 8pm dinner. Plus the amazing aft mini-cabin! Though the movement with the waves would take getting used to, I don't know. But wow it looks comfy. The mast steps, bowsprit, lower bow deck, are all great simple add-ons. I kept thinking it was a Canadian boat but it's a fine original California-built & design.

    Those are really nice little boats, but they are pretty cramped due to the narrow beam. Incidentally the molded in lapstrake pattern in the hull significantly stiffens the hull without adding much weight. Plus it looks so salty. Does it come with a trailer? One thing that puzzles me about boats like this one is the absence of pressure water. It is not as if a water pump is a huge draw. Fortunately adding pressure water is cheap and simple.
    This week I went out for a sail on a boat you should review if one comes up for sale - a Hinckley Souwester 30. It would make a good comparison to the the Norsea and the PSC you just did.

    Interesting boat. A molded fiberglass, false lapstrake, canoe stern hull with odd but appealing lines.

      Quirky. But so interesting. It would get tight in there real fast but. It’s a floating shire. You need to be under 6 feet to not go crazy I think.

    I've owned a Nor'sea before, should have kept it. Pros of this boat, clean and well maintained. Con single cylinder raw water cooled engine and IMHO the hour meter is either broken or disconnected or has been replaced in the past. And as you rowed away it looks like you left the forward hatch open.

    • @boatfools
      @boatfools  2 місяці тому

      Definitely would want a marine diesel mechanic to look over the engine. Agreed on the clean and well-maintained. One of the best we’ve seen. Re: forward hatch: Good catch! But the owner was going back out to close her up… So no worries there! Thanks for the comment and for watching!

      If I were younger with no family to be concerned about and nothing but time, I’d do it. The boat is certainly capable (after a marine survey, of course). You’d probably want to make some modifications, but you would to almost any boat for that type of sailing!

    Sorry, but this is a horrible boat. No room, no conveniences, can't get into the water, hard to work on, the list goes on and on. Nothing about it is practical compared to a more modern design for the same money. Just because someone has gone across an ocean doesn't mean anything. If that were the case the Beneteau's would be the "BEST" boat because probably more people have crossed in those than any other sail boats. It's an irrelevant fact.
    This is just plain old nostalgia. The remnants of a past time. The same thing that car lovers have for a 67 mustang... sure it's super cool, but in every way it doesn't compare to a modern mustang except the nostalgia factor. It's probably better to compare them to RV's and campers. Old Streamline campers are cool, but again, don't even remotely compare to new designs.
    I appreciate your reviews. You two are great salesman for sure, but these 40+ year old boats are garbage, lol. If they were so great, people would still be making them or variants of them and guess what... no one is. Canoe sterns are trash and always will be. But that's just this"fools" opinion.

    • @boatfools
      @boatfools  Місяць тому +1

      Differing opinions are great. Appreciate your thoughts. I think you just described our channel to a T. We are nostalgic for the old school. I just saw Lin Pardey speak at the Camden Opera House last week. Holy smokes. When she and her late husband said, "Go Small, Go Simple, but Go Now" they weren't kidding. Neither of their first two boats they built had an engine. Not everything has to be the newest this or the newest that to have a place on the water. Not everyone needs every modern convenience known to humanity in order to find adventure. If fact, just like driving a 67 Mustang, there is a certain joy found in something old. Call it nostalgia. Call it what you like. I just call it fun. And that's what it is all about - being on the water and looking toward the horizon. I don't care if you're on a sunfish or newest dual-helm rocket. Just get out there. But, alas, I think this Nor'Sea is freaking ACES. :)
