fun fact about the "Hungarian politicians use the word 'woke' inspired by the GOP" thing:
that's happening all around Europe. the US are so influential that their politics are often topics for discussion at the dinner table in pretty much any country that speaks English.
For example the German far right populist party AfD is very loud about how bad it is to be "woke".

    • @soundtrack1405

And is it big thing in Germany to be anti-SJW amongst people or on UA-cam?

    • @TheDarthbinky
      @TheDarthbinky 2 роки тому +10

The thing is, I'd argue that Austria actually caused the phenomenon, not the USA. In the 1980s, a man named Jörg Haider took control of the center-right FPÖ and he shifted it hard to the populist right. He was basically Trump 20 years before Trump was Trump. He was the guy who became famous for talking about how the Nazis weren't really all that bad, making Austria an international pariah in the early 2000s when the FPÖ was able to form a coalition with the conservative ÖVP. His populist right-wing rhetoric has become a staple across Europe and the US. Thankfully he died in 2008 when he drunkenly drove his car off a cliff, but the FPÖ still exists and is still a Trump-style right-wing populist party with fascist tendencies (and now the ÖVP is drifting that way too).
Yeah that whole "woke" thing is a new evolution but that's what fascism does, it coopts new ideas and creates a new message to oppose. It's not new.

    • @st0lf
      @st0lf 2 роки тому +8

      @@soundtrack1405 oh very.
Personally I have observed that Germany tends to mirror social trends in the US pretty well, I assume because of high fluency in English. We seem to always lag behind by 2-4 years, but since COVID and the popularisation of the app "telegram" as a news source, that distance has shrunk.
When it comes to feminism and gender stuff we are very much still stuck in the phase immediately following gamergate.
We also have some societal challenges that the US don't have to deal with, that have become wedge issues. For example our entire language is sexist. Every noun is gendered in German, so it leads to the confusion of "female or male doctor" in literally every profession. Trying to fix this by creating "gender appropriate language" has motivated massive backlash and a huge number of people who decry anything close to it as "woke nonsense".
Because of it, reactionaries have even coined a term for progressives that I find hilarious: "gender gaga". (we don't have a word for gender, so we just use yours lol)

    • @st0lf
      @st0lf 2 роки тому +2

@@TheDarthbinky that's interesting. I know close to nothing about European politics in the early 00s, might have to get up to speed there.

@@st0lf If you've heard of the Ibiza affair a couple years ago, where some Austrian politicians were recorded saying (paraphrasing) that they were cool with accepting bribes from Russian oligarchs.... that was the FPÖ. They were in a coalition government with the ÖVP again at the time, and the Ibiza affair caused the coalition to collapse, and that's why the ÖVP and Greens are in a coalition now. Haider left the FPÖ and created a new party, the BZÖ before he died and his replacement as Party Führer was a former dentist named Heinz-Christian "HC" Strache, and he was Vice Chancellor when he was involved in the Ibiza affair; he and most of the top party leadership resigned in the aftermath (and a lot of them wound up forming a new fascist political party called Allianz für Österreich... because of course they did). (The BZÖ didn't really outlive Haider and barely exists anymore)
The FPÖ is still a garbage political party. So is the AfD, of course.

And actually bothers to get things correct on foreign policy. JOliver is a disaster when it comes to foreign policy. But that comes from him being a moderate liberal married to a conservative. Oh and he's a capitalist - that also has a rather sizeable impact on the things he covers, how he covers it, and the potential solutions he offers up.
There's a reason so many of his "solutions" is "call your congressperson" or "go vote." Yeah, cuz that works so well. Politicians know what the ppl in their districts think. It's kinda their job and they have staffers whose entire job is monitoring those opinions. But we all know that what ppl want isn't what politicians are there to do. They serve their donors, not their constituents.
But all of that runs counter to the average reformist/moderate liberal position of "we just need to get the right ppl in office and everything will be fine."

@@Puddlef1sh Yeah, he covers them from the standard conservative foreign policy position that's embraced by both liberals and conservatives in this country.
I question how much of an ally JOliver actually is. But if you're a moderate liberal, yeah - you'd probably see him as an ally as that's exactly what he is.
Ofc, I'm not a moderate liberal. I'm a communist and he's a capitalist. He's fundamentally against my political position, although we may occasionally agree on a few issues here and there.
But even in his recent discussion of trans rights and how conservatives are attacking trans ppl across the country, he left out there very important fact that Dems in DC have the votes to pass legislation outlawing discrimination against trans ppl and reversing many of the anti-trans legislation. And yet, what have Dems done? Nothing. They've done nothing. They've not even talked about trans rights in any meaningful way. A few candidates here and there, but the party as a whole? "It's not a priority."
I can understand to some extent why they don't want a vote on Roe v Wade - they want to keep their anti-choice incumbents from being on the record. But what's the rationale for not even trying to pass any legislation countering the attacks on trans ppl? Hmm, is it a similar reasoning? Do they have a lot of anti-trans ppl in office that they're trying to get reelected? Cuz if that's the case, maybe that's something voters should be aware of (ideally in the primary process as that's when we've got the best chance at kicking them out with minimal harm).

Holy shit, as a hungarian who've been following your chanel for 2 years, I've been dreaming of this all along. Thank you for your work!!!
Edit: Cody, you've got a few bits wrong and I'm here to correct them for you and the rest here.
-Hungarian history before the forming of the state is very scetchy, hungarians being under roman rule is definitely historically unbased.
-Károlyi's office preceded the office of Kun Béla, not the other way around
-WW1 ended with the Treaty of Trianon for Hungary, which meant the lost of two thirds of the country's former territories. This should be considered as a "nationall trauma" which is kept artificially on the surface by nationalists and the country's biased education system. I have to add that hundreds of thousands of hungarians still live on these former territories, and they are often disrespected and were denied some privileges such as education in their native of hungarian. The Treaty of Trianon is the main historical event which can be pointed at by the right as an example of foreign influence, conspiracy and national decline. Many people's lack of trust in the west is due to this event.
I remember being in primary school around the year of 10 when they told me about this. "It is as if you had a 100 books and somebody came and took 66 of them". That sure sounded horrible to me and it took some readjustment when I learned that not all of those territories supported a hungarian population.
-The anti-gay referendum is actually widely supported. The reason it did not turn out to be supportive is because of the high number of invalid votes (I myself cast one of them)
-What I think you didn't emphasize enough is the mentality behind people voting for Orbán. Most of my family votes for Orbán while thinking that free speech and other values are important. They just don't see how and why Orbán's system opposes these ideas. When I told my father about the lies in one of the anti-gay hate campaigns, he simply said "if they are lying, the opposition have all the power to spread a truthful message"
Edit2: @personofgirth accused me of shifting the narrative by downplaying the factor of incompetence in the opposition. At the 2022 election, a nigh-collective opposition coalition was formed to gain the upper hand in the election. Every party appointed presidential candidates, and votes were conducted to decide between them. The 5 main candidates were Fekete-Győr András were Jakab Péter (leader of the "Jobbik" or "the Right" party, which funnily and arguably is less right now than Fidesz. He resigned later this year), Dobrev Klára (wife of the "we lied in the day and night" Gyurcsány), Karácsony Gergely (the mayor of Budapest), and Márki-Zay Péter (who was the leader of a smaller party if I'm not mistaken). After a tie with Karácsony and Márki-Zay, Karácsony stepped back in favor of Márki-Zay. By this time me and most of the people I know was certain in Fidesz's fourth victory, and it happened. To be honest, I didn't care enough to follow the events but Fidesz led a successful campaign against the candidates (first against the most likely winner of Karácsony), blaming Márki-Zay with plans to end socialized healthcare, do migration stuff, make utilities more expensive, and lead the country into war (which late was definitely the most hianous lie). As a result, Fidesz once again won with a landslide which in part is due to the coalition failing to put up a fight with a famous and respected candidate.

As a Hungarian I am highly impressed how well your video is researched. I haven't lived in Hungary for over 22 years, however my whole family still lives there. It's heartbreaking to see freedom and democracy being taken away from Hungarians along with their future. You are right, everyone should pay attention to what's happening there, because it can and will happen in Europe and America if people will not defend democracy. Its too easy to become complacent.

"Democratic regimes may be defined as those in which, every now and then, the people are being given the illusion of being sovereign, while the true sovereignty in actual fact resides in other forces which are sometimes irresponsible and secret."
      _Benito Mussolini_
Victor Orbán hasn't invented this shit. He's just better at doing it than others. It's the good old shady technique of exploiting the loopholes in any particular legal system, dialed up to eleven, and even actual dictators (who couldn't really do it fair and square like he does), saw that. Hence the Mussolini quote.
That being said, I disagree with Mister Fascismo over there, about equating democracy with what he - and so many others with him - call 'democratic regimes'.
It doesn't take long to realize how much of an open secret, bordering on full blown denial, the equivocation of democracy and republic has become throughout the early modern period. And yet, both systems' core institutions are fundamentally different.
Broadly speaking, democracies develop regimes in which citizens can seat at the Assembly, participate in lawmaking, discuss, deliberate, and decide which law to pass, and can appoint different functions through either election or sortition, depending on which tool is best suited for said functions.
On the other hand, republics develop regimes in which only _politicians_ may receive the aforementioned privileges and prerogatives, depending on how well they perform during their careers. Put simply, republican officials form a political elite who holds the actual legislative power. Now, tell me, which system is your country actually employing? Is it a democracy, really, or is it more like a republic?

Some corrections/suggestions for the "Hungarian History Time" segment:
14:17 - "Hungary is a multiethnic modern state": It is most certainly not. 94-97% of Hungary's population considers themselves ethnic Hungarians. It is one of the most ethnically homogenous countries in the world. The on-screen description ("Hungary WAS a multiethnic country") is correct, it was until 1920.
"ancient roots involving tribes of magyar people": magyar is just the Hungarian word for Hungarian, it's like saying French people had Français ancestors.
"From its inception in the 10th century" - Hungarians moved to the Carpathian basin in 895 around the Battle of Southern Buh. Sources disagree on whether 895 or 896 should be the official date, but it's definitely late 9th century. We celebrate State Foundation Day (Államalapítás Ünnepe) that commemorates the crowning of the first King of Hungary but even that was in the early 11th century (25 December 1000 or 1 January 1001).
14:29 -"with brief periods of independence": Hungary was independent from it's inception in the late 9th century until 1526 with the exception of the Mongol invasion of 1241 to 1242. Over six centuries is hardly a "brief period".
14:33 - "Hungary was an independent kingdom under the Habsburg Monarchy": Hungary was not independent in any sense of the word until 1867. In fact, most demands of the 1848 revolution were about establishing some autonomy. They explicitly asked for an "Independent Hungarian government in Buda-Pest" (12 Pont, 1848).
By the way, the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 is arguably more important than the Revolution of 1848, that's when Austria recognized Hungary as co-equal (even the name was changed from Habsburg Empire to Austria-Hungary).
15:35 - "Then this guy (Károlyi Mihály) threw the communist guy (Kun Béla) into jail...": Károlyi was prime minister before Kun Béla, so he definitely didn't do that. In fact, he left the country to flee from the "communist guy"
It is probably worth mentioning that Orbán was a somewhat popular figurehead of the 1989 regime change (Rendszerváltás).

Things are pretty similar here, in Quebec. About 15 years ago, a new nationalist party began scaring people about immigrants by creating a made-up crisis called "crise des accommodements raisonnables" (crisis of the reasonable accomodations). The government back then created a commission to study this "crisis", and it was revealed that in truth, there were no problem - people simply did not know what immigrants looked like, and thus whenever the medias spoke to them about migrants the public got scared. So, it was recommended that we should simply encourage the population to learn that migrants were "normal people", and not some kind of scary monster.
No political party liked the conclusions of the commission : the nationalists were disappointed by the findings, and the liberals were not really interested in its results anyway so nothing was done about it. Fast forward a few years, the Liberals gets beaten because of corruption while the nationalists continue to scare people about migrants. In the meantime, the separatists try to pass a law targetting specifically muslim women because they are the migrants that everyone associated with the so-called "crisis of the reasonable accomodations". They get defeated, the Liberals come back, but this time they feel pressured into doing "something", so they pass a bill making it so that you have to not have anything covering your face when receiving any service from the government (because the nationalists scared the public into thinking that muslim women with the "full-face veil" were common, and that they were a national threat since they could hide anything underneath). Then, the Liberals got defeated again and this time, the nationalists who began the whole "crisis" decided to "solve it" by making it so that musim women wearing the hijab could not work for the government - calling it rather explicitely a "nationalist law" and saying that it's goal was to "give something to the majority, the ones that are a little racist and who would not want any muslims in the streets".
Then, the provincial PM passed the last 4 years passing bills that similarly target minorities, using the word "woke" to disqualify it's opponents, saying (ironically) that they introduce here concepts from the USA that are foreign to our society, glorifying Duplessis ("le père de la Grande Noirceur", or the "father of the Great Darkness" in English), wanting to build a wall with the USA, saying that immigrants are a threat and that we should rewrite our Charter of Rights and abolish our counter-powers so that we would be able to deal better with the "threat" that they represent.

@@fantuswitt9063 Our last election was rather depressing, too. The new Nationalists got a little less than 40% of the vote, but over 75% of the deputies. This would mean that if they want, nothing stops them from rewriting our Charter of Rights (well, kinda. We would still have the federal one, but we can "opt out" of that one for specific bills and for pretty important rights. So, for exemple, our provincial PM could rewrite our Charter, then pass a bill going against freedom of expression, the right to life or the presumption of innocence and just "opt out" of the federal Charter protecting those rights. The only things that might be able to do anything in such a case would maybe be the judges - what Legault called "The government of the Judges", something that he wants to abolish - and the Governor General, a position mostly symbolic).
Those are flaws inherent to our government, but before the Nationalists, every political party had enough good will to not exploit them. Now... It's less obvious.

So, when covid came around and suddenly the PM said that his fans now needed to listen to the experts, they felt betrayed and went full conspiracy theory - to the point where the "anti-covid" party got 15% of the vote (as much as all the other parties that is not the "new Nationalists").

The government goes the extra stupid mile to try and cover up mismanaged policies by blaming the war. The only true thing is that yes, energy costs went higher due to the conflict yet Russia was and remains keen on dicking with anyone to whom they sell oil and gas to if they feel the leadership is "not friendly enough".
The hot second Russia closed fossil fuel transport to Ukraine under timoshenko should have alarmed Hungary, and frankly it did. At the time they jumped into nabucco and Kóka talked about buying liquid gas from tankers. 12 years were wasted on not diversifying.
There is no press freedom because if you tried to submit a readers letter to state television (which was a custom) detailing how failed and misguided policies lead to Hungary being the only country in Europe with buy limits on food, they would never air it as they can't.

wikipedia says: "The Roman Empire conquered the territory between the Alps and the area west of the Danube River from 16 to 15 BC, the Danube being the frontier of the empire.[43] In 14 BC, Pannonia, the western part of the Carpathian Basin, which includes today's west of Hungary, was recognised by emperor Augustus in the Res Gestae Divi Augusti as part of the Roman Empire.[43] The area south-east of Pannonia was organised as the Roman province Moesia in 6 BC.[43] An area east of the river Tisza became the Roman province of Dacia in 106 AD, which included today's east Hungary. It remained under Roman rule until 271."

Second, those are Székely's, not "Maghiar"(also spelled Magyar), and no, there is no way the Székely's can take back what the Treaty Of Trianon annexed from them, these are completely fake news because the entire idea is idiotic and impossible and you know it.
