Mountain was my first concert ever. Saw them at The Academy of Music in NYC, 1971. I was 13 years old. My brother took me on condition I didn’t tell anyone his date stood him up (my luck). We had seats 7th row center. Amazing show. $5.50 a ticket. Driving home over the Brooklyn Bridge in his VW Super Beetle, I could see his lips moving but couldn’t hear anything other than faint ringing in my ears. Was like I was in a silent movie. Loudest band I ever had the pleasure to see live until I saw The Clash at Bonds International Casino in ‘77. Fond memories (as I go slowly deaf at age 64, after more than 250 rock concerts all over the world).

One of the funniest rock 'n' roll stories I've ever heard involves Mountain and Black Sabbath on tour together. On one night, Sabbath couldn't go on stage because Tony Iommi had lost his artificial fingers and couldn't play the guitar; Mountain, however, couldn't fill the entire bill because Leslie had gotten drunk the night before and lost his false teeth, and therefore couldn't sing! Oh, to be a roadie on tour with these holy fools in the '70s!

Call us Boomers or anything else that floats your boat. Just remember that we lived and breathed for the waves of great music produced from around 1965 to ‘75. No internet, just free-form FM radio in most cities, plus journals like Creem, Circus, Rolling Stone etc. to help us keep abreast of the vast number of great artists.
BTW, that’s the legendary NYC DJ Murray the K (Kaufman) at the very end during his FM days. He was on WINS 1010 from 1958, playing Top 40 and hosting the Beatles in 1964-65. When WOR FM 98.7 went to a progressive free-form Rock format in 1966, Murray morphed into a laid back style playing non-Top 40 records.

I saw Mountain when I was 12, the best band of the day at a one-day music festival. To this day, I've never been to a live concert where a band could deliver a sonic blast like Mountain. Kid you not, the concrete floor beneath my feet was vibrating during "Mississippi Queen". As a Rolling Stone writer eloquently put it: we are losing the voices of the 20th century. R.I.P. Leslie.

I finally got to see Leslie West--in August 1999 --(same weekend too)
Woodstock's 30th anniversary show at the site of Yasgars farm in White Lake NY. 10 bands that played at Woodstock played that day (Richie Havens walked right by me getting to the stage!!!) But seeing LW for the 1st time was what I looked forward to that day. He had lost a lot of his weight and was in love again--- and he eventually got his gf to walk out onto the stage to say hi -it was so cool and he was so happy-++ and he ROCKED!!

1blastman Perhaps... but have you ever been there? It's a pretty weak set-up, IMHO... I mean, they had a couple of decent displays (Springsteen, Dylan, and Jeff Buckley), but I think overall they were far too American-band oriented., again with IMHO. Not to mention the handfuls of children of patrons of the R & R Hall of Fame, who were walking around the building more or less clueless...

The Rock HOF should be in New Orleans. So much good early rock came from here. Fats Domino, Little Richard, Frogman Henry, Huey Piano Smith, Roy Brown, Guitar Slim, Slim Harpo, Jerry Lee Lewis and many more either came from New Orleans or Louisiana.
