- Plenty of (mostly) mediocre fare in this early May '91 episode: F/X 2, Blake Edwards' SWITCH, Michael Keaton in ONE GOOD COP, DROWNING BY NUMBERS and the re-release of SPARTACUS. As a reminder, if you're looking for the latest home video reviews -- from Blu-Rays of classic catalog titles to the latest releases -- be sure to check out my own review site at www.andyfilm.com
Kirk Douglas was 43 when he made Spartacus. Stallone was 45 and Arnie was 44 in 1991. Great examples Gene!
I liked FX 2 just as much as the original
Me too.
Did you spot King Theoden from Lord of the Rings?
Roger spoiled the entire plot of One Good Cop. Not a great film but not a bad film
At this point in 1991, my friends and I were juniors in high school and at the movies every weekend. It was a good year for movies and we saw most of them. Both F/X 2 and One Good Cop are two examples of a decent movie. Nothing more, nothing less. Well worth the five bucks it cost us to see them on the big screen. Sometimes you are just glad the movie entertains you. I could of done without the sappy moments in One Good Cop, but Keaton is great and some of Heywood Gould's script echoes his screenplay for Fort Apache, The Bronx. F/X 2 is the more entertaining of the two (the first F/X is an 80s classic) with excellent performances by Brown & Dennehy. It's a decent script, but studio interference forced a PG13 rating on to an R rated film. Every time the movie starts to be edgy, it gets dulled down real quick. I don't agree with Siskel that the film was boring. I have seen it a few times since the first time and I was STILL entertained.
I would rather watch a movie considered mediocre in 1991 than one considered great today.
Spot On Correct:)
Boy, are you right about that!
What a singular simplistic platitude. Basically like some old codger from the 50s saying the same thing about his era. Get over yourself. Great films were made far before 91 and will be made far far after.
Loved the first “F/X” movie, the sequel was completely unnecessary. I had forgotten about “Switch”. But I do remember seeing “One Good Cop” back in the day (actually I just got it amongst my streaming recommendations LOL) , mostly because of Rachel Ticotin whose career got a boost from her role in “Total Recall” the previous year (1990). As for “Spartacus”, this restored re-released only further proved the quality of the movie.
And clearly Rachel Ticotin was in two movies that week…LOL…
Gene Siskel was!-the wood panelled cottages in Another Stakeout are better than the actual film:)Watch it for Gene's interior designer instincts!:)
Another Steak Out is terrible but enjoyable 😂
As a Kid, I enjoyed these. I liked Brian Denehys cop movie better though! 1991 is one of my personal favorite movie years!
From now on, I'll check if my helicopter pilots are Bozo the clown 😂 😂 😂
Deadly baked beans! 🤣
drowning by numbers is one of the less interesting greenaways but it's interesting that they didn't touch on the dynamic between the coroner and the three widows - one of the director's richest web of relationships.
Mmm mmm mmm...love me some Ellen Barkin
Johnny Handsome:)
FX2 was a good movie. You two get two thumbs down 🤣😅🙂🙂🙂 I just had a Spartacus moment... LMAO 🤣😅🤣🤣
Blake Edward's wrote & directed three great films. 10, S.O.B. and Skin Deep. Switch is nowhere near as good as those, but Siskel is right about Ellen Barkin's performance. It really is quite wonderful. I wish the whole film lived up to it.
dude you need to see THE PARTY,today:)
@@ryangettig274 I saw it years ago and although i admired Sellers performance the movie didn't entertain me like the ones I mentioned.
@@TheNameisPlissken1981 cool-I love SD-watch it 1x a year-Gavin McLeod is in The Party-Capt.Stuebing-for others reading:)
Have you seen her in Sea of Love? It's a good movi6.
Have you seen here in Sea of Love? It's a good movie.
I remember THAT I saw FX2 in theaters but for the life of me couldn't remember a single thing about it. Tried watching it on Netflix about a year ago and couldn't make it past the first ten minutes without getting bored.
I saw "One Good Cop" in the theaters and enjoyed it somewhat. Saw "Switch" a couple of times over the years and agree with Siskel that Ellen Barkin was quite good in it. All of those movies were released at a time where it didn't break the bank to go out and see a movie. I could be willing to take a chance on a film and only be out maybe 4 dollars if I didn't care for it. Times are different now. I won't even go the cinemas anymore unless there are at least two films there I want to see on a big screen -- I'll pay ticket price for the first one and then sneak into the second (and maybe third) one for free so I feel like I'm getting better value for my money. Right now, though, it's hard to find even ONE movie I'd be willing to pay current ticket prices to see.
My personal reviews
One Good Cop (two thumbs up)
F/X 2 (two thumbs down)
Switch (two thumbs down)
Spartacus (two thumbs up way up)
Drowning by Numbers (two thumbs down)
