Fire Roll, Are Hardwood Ashes More Reactive Than Softwood Ashes? The Clear Winner Of Red Oak vs Pine

  • For years I have wondered if hardwood ashes were more reactive in the Fire Roll than softwood ashes. I've always kind of thought that they were. Well, when I found out that hardwood ashes have 10 times the amount of lye in them that softwoods ashes have, I wanted to try this Fire Roll aka Rudiger Roll experiment. Now, you might think that I'm saying lye will fire roll. LOL! I don't know, but I bet it will. I'm just not going to be the one that tries it out and possibly breaths in all those caustic fumes! The chemical name is Potassium Hydroxide, KOH.

I made my first fire roll using diatomaceous earth, which is primarily silica with no strong bases (ie no Potassium Hydroxide, or anything like it). It worked just as well as the later versions I made using either hard and softwood ashes.
Ashes, rust, diatomacious earth, etc, are all abrasive. The abrasive properties of wood ash will vary based on species and growing conditions. The % caustics in the ash could make a difference, but so could any of the other uncontrolled variables here.

Friction alone may ignite the cotton but the other chemical reactions brings the intensity to ignite tinder more easily.

What a stellar find mate! I have always used hardwood ash as we don't often burn soft wood here in OZ. I didn't realise I had it easy. I'm off to start practicing with soft wood as well as the no ash method.
Thanks for sharing this David. I have found many of your clips very helpful and informative.
All the best from the now much colder Australia,
    Ben

I've never gotten no ash/no filler to work but others have. Save yourself a LOT of unnecessary fails and wasted energy... visit my fire roll playlist.

As a picture framer, I use Rottenstone quite a bit customizing frames, etc. It works great as an alternative to wood ash that I get out of my wood stove at home.

We learned Something New Everyday! Thank You, David! Also at 0:30, I notice the grass is greener and healthy under your work table. Would that be from the wood ashes,?

Superb video as always David.. If I may ask.. Do you think the ashes from uncharred PUNKWOOD would work in the fire roll.. I think you would need to burn down a hefty sized piece of PUNKWOOD.. Interesting??

Are there fibers that you can find in the field that could work instead of cotton? Cattail or milkweed fluff?

Would hair from a hair brush work? When my wife cleans out her hairbrush there is a pretty significant hair ball removed. Looks a lot like the yucca fiber from the other video
