It is not hard to whittle out a set of Rudiger Roll aka Fire Roll boards... the top and bottom boards. I had planned on searching the woods and burn pile for a good, straight grained, and clear 8" chunk of log to make them out of. LOL! I didn't have to go far. The 12' Pine log right there at the fire table had a good enough piece in it to use. Come see how well this little 7" set of boards turned out and how well they worked right on the ground to produce 2 easy friction fires. Please follow the LINKs below and SUBSCRIBE. Thank You! Wow, I have never heard of this technique, so I am excited to have learned a new technique today!! Thanks for your great, hands-on, videos, explanations & methodology!!🔥☄🔥
Ok I have mastered several ways to lite fires. This was the only way I had not practiced with. I didn't think about splitting a log and making fire boards on the spot but I will be trying today. Thank you once again David.
Barry Fulcher : I have been around for 83 years ,and know how to make fire by a lot of different ways ,but i have never heard of the fire log in all that time .I am going to try it this week for sure ,after i clean out my wood stove. Thanks for sharing !!!
When that roll of cotton started to smoke and flamed up the tinder in your hands, you could have knocked me over with a feather! I have never heard of a method like this before - Thanks for the education!!
I've studied primitive fire making methods for DECADES. I've learned from Ray Mears, Les Stroud, Les Hiddens, and COUNTLESS UA-camrs. I've NEVER seen this method before. I'll be experimenting with cattails and milkweed this coming summer. This is AMAZING! Thanks, David! VERY COOL!
This really shows some emergency survival potential. How many of us already have a small cutting board with us in our camping gear? There's good reasons to bring, or make, a couple of flat bits of wood.
This method is amazing, I wishing I would have learned this 20 years ago !! It’s like cheating… after working a hand and bow drill!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you so much! I had no idea what you were planning to do. I had never heard of this before. What a handy trick to know. I'm going to try this the next time I'm out & ready to make a fire. Great bushcraft knowledge!
Any wood that splits true, doesn't need a lot of whittling, makes the best boards. Master the technique with cotton and ashes on a comfortable table first. See my fire roll playlist. This technique is much trickier than I make it look.
Dave you are the fire fly. That method is easier than a bow drill and more reliable. Your first fire in the woods is the hardest. You can never know enough ways to make 🔥. Conditions change in the bush all the time.
Thank you David, just another great effort in making fire from little to nothing. This should be considered a survival channel. Helping folks on how to survive in the wilderness. Always a pleasure to watch and learn. Thanks, Billy Albq. NM
Seen it many a times ..But everytime I see it done from different people I am always learning something 💯 different Well done and greetings from Australia
You have the best fire-starting videos on youtube and I appreciate the different methods you have shown. One addition to your fire-making kit would be a pair of knee pads which really make being on your knees more comfortable and allows you more mobility by taking away the worry of putting your knee on something and causing pain.
I just use 2x4 that I've cut down so they are manageable. It works every time. It took me a minute to figure out the right technique for me. I will never forget it.
Wow! Thanks for sharing this great way to create the necessary embers for a good fire. And not a lot of preparation needed, really. This would be a great, lightweight and easy to use addition to one's pack. Not to mention the awe other campers would have for one's prowess in the great outdoors. I'm adding this to my own pack.
I've been mucking around the bush all my life (a fair while!).... and I'd never seen or heard of the fire roll method ever. Fantastic. Gonna give it a try soon. Thanks mate! Cheers 🍻
I've seen a couple videos of this style of lighting now, and where a lot of them claim to be able to get smoke going in between 60-90 seconds, you got the the first one smoking in only 40 seconds once you got into it, including 2 stops where you inspected it, and you really stopped and studied it for a good few seconds each time. Meaning following your video, I'll take approximately 30 seconds of constant rolling. That's a hell of a lot quicker than many styles I've encountered. Impressive
Very interesting. It been my experience that there are people that just like to look for something to carp about. I like your videos. Always learning something from you.
Just watched your rust and cotton ball fire roll, now I'm hooked! Subscribed and got my notebook ready for notes! Thank you so so much for making these videos. I'll definitely be teaching my kids some new camping techniques 💚from Eastern TN
Great videos, David. I did a demonstration with different fire starting methods for my Scout troop a few years ago and your videos were a great help in honing my skills.
8 catagories pretty much cover evrything I do. 4 of them are friction fire... hand and bow drill, bamboo fire saw, and fire roll. The other 4 are ferro rod, flint and steel, solar, and empty BIC.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl I was thinking of flat rocks as well. If you're up to it, that would be an interesting presentation too. Thank you for your reply.
Teaching scouts this and the parents say the same thing. Things like where are you going to get a cotton ball from, or where will you find lumber in the woods. I show them. It just goes to show how little they truly understand and it makes me laugh at times. Well done David on this video.
I always try to direct them to my fire roll playlist and then wonder if they're even willing to put forth that much effort to learn about all the natural options available.
As always very impressive I sent a friend of mine from India a fire roll video and he sent me a picture of a new EDC knife he bought so I showed him a picture of my Stanley 10- 049 that I got because of one of your videos I had watched and so he replied - Fire roll, stanley knife. I can sense you are a fan of David West 😉 lol ain’t that something? He is right . God bless you David have a good evening.
I have a lot of subscribers from Brazil too. Was out for one of my walks a couple of months ago. As I crossed at the crosswalk, a person, stopped in a pickup truck said, Mr. West! I looked back, he said, I watch your videos. I smiled and waved at him. That was a first for me.
Great video! Would appreciate as you demonstrate to provide a description of the objective of board construction and potential wrong ways to do it to increase understanding. Thanks!
Very interesting. I'm going to have to try that. I recall the first time I made fire. I had the ember in the tinder bundle, but I remained bent over. Boy did I learn a lesson. I sucked in a bunch of smoke.
I Asked the question if it could be done on a short board/boards on your other channel.. You answered I should check out this channel and see for myself .. Awesome ! All I say is awesome !! Every question I have asked you in the past , you have taken the time to answer me and that is very much appreciated! Your videos are so educational .. Thankyou !! I’m thinking the reason I was failing at my attempts with the shorter boards was I wasn’t fixing the bottom board on the ground etc .. like you did here.. I was always trying holding both boards ( one in each hand ) and rubbing .. regrettably with no success.. Now I’ve seen your proof that it can be done and can’t wait to try it your way ! The proper , successful way !!! 👍 Thankyou for this !!
A fallen Beech or pine without the bark makes a good "bottom board" or a boulder or flat rock. Just a split piece of wood for a "top board" sometimes you don't have to split the wood just use the round surface... They're all in that playlist.
You're the master of fire making! You've mostly used ash with rolling method, metal corrosion as well. I am a smoker, and use cigarette ash to darken cotton wool, with fresnal fire method. Wondering if cigarette ash would work with this method. If you've tried it? What other ashes/ elements could go as igniting elements in this method? Like coal dust, magnasium shavings/ dust, ferrocium dust etc.

Ashes are best and charcoal dust is a more difficult alternative.
