Anyone else paused the video at 0.27 to see all the different specialties? Loool never even heard of many of them. Jamie, video suggestion: uncommon specialties in medicine. Thanks for all your amazing videos
I’m in high school currently, and I’m going into the medicine field! This video helped me a lot on trying to figure out what type of doctor I want to be in the future , thank you!
Awesome!!! i'm a med student too but in Brazil, it surprises me how different the path to becoming a physician in both counties is! Here, after high school, we get right into med school for 6 year, which the last 2 of them is called internship, where we switch from one to another of the 5 big specialties (surgery, OB-Gyn, Pediatrics, family/community medicine and internal medicine). After graduation, we can apply to residency, so usually there are direct access specialities like general surgery, neurosurgery, neurology, pediatrics, etc (2 to 5 years) and indirect access specialities, for exemple, general surgery is required to apply to cardiothoracic surgery (3 extra years) or pediatric surgery (2+). By the way, i intent to apply to general surgery residency, but i'm still a third year med student, got a lot of time to decide lol. Congrats Jamie, your content is great!
Wow! Its crazy how you proceed into med school after high school. Here in Philippines we still need to finish any undergraduate courses related to medicine before going to med school. So its 8 years in total T.T internship is not yet included.
I wish we had more exposure to a lot more specialties in med school. There’s so many good ones out there imo that aren’t part of the several big ones. Nice overview!
Your smile after saying emergency medicine just made my day. It’s what I am looking forward to as well, and I’m so happy to see someone who is devoted to helping those having their worst day. ✌️
This was a great breakdown!! Especially getting to see what you can specialize in after your residency. For programs like emergency medicine, does it just depend on the program for the length?(3 vs 4) years?
That is so usefull! In my country we do not have paramedics. But nevertheless our healthcare system is crap, the only good thing is we don't have to directly pay our doctors for their service.
i’ve been wanting to become a doctor ever since preschool! i’m in 9th grade of high school and still do! thing is i don’t know what doctor. so this was very helpful! thanks! 💓
I'm in my final year of Pediatric Residency (wish me luck!) and I always use the same words you used in describing Pediatrics; its internal medicine for infants and children 😂 Anyone wants to ask about pediatrics in general you are welcome ✌🏼
Aww! You did not talk about PM&R. I think it is underrated. For those of you that don't know, these doctors manage patients that are going through rehab to restore their function. They work closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists etc to get patients to the highest level of independence as possible.
I cannot wait Ms.Jamie to be my md student inspo as I go through my college life in the medical field. I'm so glad that I have discovered you here in youtube,I guess you were a miracle for me because you've just popped up on my tl. Thank you for inspiring us! :)
Loved my ENT rotation - great culture, minimal ego, huge variety of procedures and its growing as a specialty, not shrinking like some others with the rise of interventional radiology. Good luck :)
Nice vid, Jamie. I'm a mechanical engineer but l am planning to enter med school this year. Your vids give me ideas about medicine. Thank you. from Philippines
I believe my specialty would be internal medicine, specifically cardiology. It's going to take me some time before I get there but I know it's all worth it ! 😀
You are one of my biggest inspirations, Jamie! I'm on my way to becoming an acute care NP and you continuously help hone in on my passion for health care!!!
I think the only thing stopping me from pursuing to be a doctor is financial issues. I sometimes doubt myself if I'm also smart for it, but I believe that I can handle it because I'm the type to be very driven and encouraged if I'm interested in something. It's really just the financial issue :((
Hi. I love you channel. You are an inspiration for all of us!. Can you make a video how do you divide your study materials for an exam? How do you prepare for an exam? If you can help that would be brilliant x
What’s the best job to have during your undergraduate as a premed? I’ve heard medical scribe and technician but I really don’t know what would be best for me. (I’m leaning towards emergency medicine or surgery.)
Actually, a lot of the companies will hire you while you are in undergrad as long has you have enough time to commit to it! Though night shifts can be hard to manage with class schedules, it's do-able! :)
this is so helpful. im planning to proceed med and havent really decide on what field ill take. but im planning between radiology and neorology. thank you so much! 😁❤
It's pretty rare that people who have gone through all med school and seen/studied everything don't have the slightest cue what to go for. But if somebody doesn't, my personal advice is that at the end of the day, whatever speciality you choose, you still get to be a doctor which is what you went to school for and wanted to be from the very beginning! people sometimes obsess over the speciality like being a cardiologist or a neurologist is as different as being a doctor or an architect, but truthfully you're gonna end up loving what you do no matter what speciality you choose. The only real difference is between surgery and clinical subjects.
meggyspencer maybe you might know you want to be a doctor and is in premed but you can’t really choose a specialty because you have no experience... it’s like what they say when you reach to med school almost every body change their specialty from what they originally wanted to do
meggyspencer So true! One of my biggest pet peeves is when people ask me “why don’t you want to be a cardiologist or neurologist?”. I find this question so ignorant and making the two specialties seem so overrated. If all doctors went into cardiology and neurology, who would be taking care of all the patients with kidney failure, autoimmune diseases and endocrine disorders. From all my rotations so far, every specialty is important in its own right since they all fundamentally deal with helping people achieve better health and quality of life outcomes.
kayan Samuels Exactly! Your decision will constantly change as you experience each rotation since you will realise whether the specialty meets your own personal interests and lifestyle demands.
This was so helpful because all I can think about these days is what I want to specialize in! Where can I get more information about the residency programmes?
my first video and i really like this channel,,,,keep up with the amazing content...im studying to become a clinical geneticist...its a type of doctor that deals with genetics and health involving medicine.
What do you think aboit endocrinology ? I'm really intrested to hearing your opinion Thank you so much for all the precious time and hard work you put in the making of these videos
Hey Jamie! I'm a fourth year, too, and I just matched into Psychiatry. If anyone has any questions for me I'd be glad to answer them. It's an amazing field that is only growing in its possibilities, especially in fellowships! For example, in addition to the fellowships you listed, there are also some in geriatric psych, sleep medicine, pain medicine, and so much more. Congrats on matching- knew we could do it! :)
Hello! Can I ask how they match one to a specific field in medical schools? I'm interested to know if they match you based on your proficiency in a particular field or your interests. Thank you!
I've always wanted to work in a hospital setting but I don't want something like overwhelming situations such as working in ER. Maybe that's why I've felt like I fit in labs because it seems like the workplace is calm (but IDK maybe it's hectic there too)
Such a helpful video! Uhm, however, i am now feel interested in Physician assistant. Could someone please give me more info about that job ? Thanks a lot.
Alicia Mendsey Oh Wow! Hi Jamie! I would just like to ask if how many years of residency is required for aspiring neurosurgeons. Thanks for creating great content for aspiring doctors like me!
Hi Jamie 💚 I'm a 3rd year med student in Poland and I think I have a lot of time to decide left (Our studies last 6 years and then we take a final exam) but so far, I really enjoyed clinical classes in pediatrics. Probably it's because of the doctor who takes care of my group- she is a great specialist and fantastic person. I'm also interested in immunology and immunotherapy so maybe I will figure out my own way to connect these two areas in my future work 😀 But for now I have to survive pharmacology 😄
Hi Jamie sis.... I love this video... It's very informative ...and "is emergency medicine is a speciality or a part of general med school (mbbs) ...loveu.... And always #strivetofit
Anyone else paused the video at 0.27 to see all the different specialties? Loool never even heard of many of them. Jamie, video suggestion: uncommon specialties in medicine. Thanks for all your amazing videos
Sofiat A да кто о них не слышал, это ж каким узколобым надо быть, фу
those are just subspecialties , for example an ophtalmologist can further do a subspecialty in the diseases of the retina etc ..
Yees good idea!.. she should do a video for uncommon or unconventional specialties
haha I paused to see all the different specialties too! and definitely please make a video for uncommon specialties!!!
Sofiat A ua-cam.com/video/cI79CSk4awE/v-deo.html
Examples using Grey’s anatomy? Looovvveed it!!
I’m in high school currently, and I’m going into the medicine field! This video helped me a lot on trying to figure out what type of doctor I want to be in the future , thank you!
What field are you interested in?
can I ask what fellowship is? money? training? higher specialty?
I am a high school junior pursuing a career in emergency medicine. Wanted to thank you for showing your journey and being so inspiring!

I just started working as a scribe in an ER! I'd definitely recommend it if you are interested in ER medicine in the future!
I'd recommend those two that you mentioned! Feel free to watch my video on what I did as a pre-med :) I give advice on potential EC's to pursue!
I doubt any place will hire you as an undergrad for scribe or technician. Maybe after you graduate and got your BS degree.
Actually, a lot of the companies will hire you while you are in undergrad as long has you have enough time to commit to it! Though night shifts can be hard to manage with class schedules, it's do-able! :)
