    Hello, I have just started watching your videos and am really enjoying them. Spag moss from here, NZ, is farmed rather than taken from forests. I love your boy Pudge, he has such an expressive face. Looking forward to working my way through your many videos.

    This was so helpful!!! And so relaxing somehow. I loved watching you take all that moss off the roots while answering questions. I'm always weary of how much moss I can leave on the roots when transplanting to soil because it holds moisture like you said so watching you do it gave me a good idea. Thank you!

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  2 роки тому +1

      You definitely can! Just keep in mind that boiling does start the decomposition process, but I would much rather have moss that is starting to decompose rather than be wasteful and just throw it away. And once moss has gotten to a point where you can't really use it as a substrate anymore, it makes for a great pot topper, use for moss poles, greenhouse bedding, moss walls, etc!

    What are some symptoms of a plant that should be transferred from soil to sphag? I have a lot of alocasias and some of them are not thriving right now and I think it would be better to switch them to a sphag blend. I currently use peat, worm castings, perlite, hort charcoal and orchid bark.

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  2 роки тому

      Hey Rachel! I'm so sorry for the late reply. :( Spag moss isn't my personal preference for Alocasia growing but I have a lot of luck using it as more of a rehab substrate for them. Right now I have 90% of my alocasias in passive hydro with a mix of lechuzapon, orchiata (fine grade), perlite and slow release osmocote!

    hi! the spagnum moss mix u made, would you also use that for cuttings, as in a prop box? Or only for rooted plants? :)

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  2 роки тому

      Hi!! For the sphagnum moss mix, I would typically use that for plants that has a root system. For prop boxes, sometimes I do LECA or perlite down at the bottom layer, and then top it with moss. And for unrooted cuttings, just moss on its own will suffice!

    Hi, interesting video. I have a monstera that is having root rot. I’m trying to save it by rooting it in sphagnum moss. How do I know when to water them? And how much do I water? Hopefully you can answer my questions. Much appreciated 🙏

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  3 роки тому +1

      Sorry to hear you're dealing with some root rot! I usually can tell just by the colour of the moss if it needs to be watered. I use a squeeze bottle or a sprayer to redampen the moss. If you just water like you would with soil, carefully and slowly, that should be totally fine. You basically don't want an excess of water just pooled down at the bottom of the pot, but if you have drainage then the excess will just drain out on its own. I hope that's helpful!

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  3 роки тому

      You can pretty much grow anything in this medium! And I actually prepare a big batch of moss in advance and store it in a clear bin. I just make sure to air it out once in awhile so it's not too damp. I also keep it in a cool dark closet.

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  2 роки тому

      Just make sure to not pack it too tightly, and don't ever let it dry out completely! Adding something like perlite is also very helpful to promote more aeration in the vessel. Good luck!! 🤞 🤞

    I don’t care for Chilean moss. I always go for the better Sphagnum moss which is from New Zealand. I just feel it’s a better quality. It’s rated much higher than Chilean and much cleaner. That’s just my experience. I don’t use it too too much anyway because I don’t like how my plants do using it as the main ingredient.

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  2 роки тому

      I agree with ya! The New Zealand moss isn't as readily available here unless you buy it online, and the price is so much more. But sometimes I splurge and give some of my more special plants the good stuff 😆 it's so nice to be able to pop open a brick and not have to spend forever picking out twigs and crap

      Hi!! I’ve had lots of my boiled moss come back to life. Once I boil moss twice, I’ll stop using them for substrate and use them for moss poles, exo bedding, etc and some of them have definitely been reawakened! But I do think it just depends how long/much the moss has been boiled, what temp, and also the conditions they’re in after being boiled. I hope that helps!
