The Rose 32 Etudes are used across the world in clarinet teaching. Most of these etudes are more than your typical etude-type-exercises. They are melodically and harmonically pleasing to play and perform, and despite their beauty also happen to help us exercise different aspects of our playing in a musical way. Rose Etude No. 2 can be very tricky, as the "slur two" groupings are often played unevenly, the legato passages are often rushed, and the staccato passages are often performed too heavily. And on top of that, the altissimo notes are often played thin and edgy (so why not give the longest note duration of the whole etude to the high F near the end? RUDE.). Before starting your preparation, make sure you look at all the "clues" that are written in the music. This information will help you decide what kind of character to give your interpretation of the etude. Once you have determined the character, then it is time to get to work and learn the piece - let your technical decisions be guided by your musical vision for the etude - just like any piece. Start slow, and use the two click method to gradually increase speed over time (two-click how-to video here: • How To Do the Two-Clic... . Again, these etudes not only exercise our technique, they exercise the musical muscle within our imagination, and with thought, we can develop our sense of musicality in a way that can prepare us for "real repertoire" in the future!
    Thanks for watching, happy practicing!

When did you get the Yamaha? Could you do a video with your Yamaha and Buffet?

Thank you for such a lovely educational video. I have the Rose Etudes and was too focused on just getting correct notes, time, the technical aspects rather than having a bit more fun.

    Thank you very much!!! 🤗
With a background story, it is much easier to decide dynamic structure and character of the piece.
I think of a worker going home happily. The sunset begins and the city of Parma(?) turns orange-yellow.
Unfortunately, he knocks over a coffee from a beautiful looking woman.
Her husband exaggerates and gets aggressive. The worker tries to apologize but it’s to late and he flees from the group of citizens and policemen. Nobody asks what is happening. They follow the poor worker in anger.
Finally, he successfully manages it to hide between two walls. Everyone else runs straight along the street.
After that, he can release the stress and go home.
