  • Are there things we shouldn't give our dogs? There are some things that are marketed for dogs but should never be given to them, in my opinion. In this video I walk through the 3 things I will never give to my GSPs and think you shouldn't either! What would you add to the list? Comment below to let me know what else to avoid! I also show you a new toy we got that I love to hate as well as a fetch game hack with two dogs!

    I love these GSP videos you make. We have two male GSPs also, and our whole schedule is based on draining their energy, but the hikes, runs, park time and field trips are the best part of my day, every day. Your videos always make me feel like you are in the same boat and you do a great job catching the genuine GSP lifestyle of always needing to be out someplace so the dogs can be running.

    Oh the joy of the wacky GSP! They have such a distinct gregarious high energy play style that few other breeds understand. Your two must love having each other around to get out the zoomies! Good advice on the things to avoid giving them.

    Kongs are great. And cheap toys can be killers. I have Black and Tans now, litter mates. When my last GSP girl passed I just couldn't stand the thought of losing another someday. Well I gave Annie one of the Black andTans a tennis ball to play fetch with, which we did. I took it back and put it on my desk. Well she sneaked off with it unbeknownst to me, several days later we had a PROBLEM. She had eaten the ball, chewed it into pieces and swallowed it. I won't go into details of the extraction. I don't have any tennis balls around. You are giving great advice. Thank you on the part of dogs everywhere.

    Shortly after I brought mine home, I broke my foot in a rockclimbing fall. That left me stuck on the couch for a few weeks. My doggy exercise method, at that point, sometimes included a laser pen. It worked for a while, but it had a bad effect on the dog. She was smart enough to recognize that the light came from the pen, and she began eating any pen she could find. But that wasn't the problem. The problem was that she liked chasing that little red spot too much. It was like doggy-crack. She became too frantic and intense. It didn't seem like play for her. It was visibly unhealthy for her mindset. I ended up putting the pen away and never taking it out again.

    Neighbor has a beautiful charcoal grey spotted German pointer. He is so sweet and quiet. I have Shih’tu’s that flip over even though he’s just sniffing them. Commenting because my little dogs can destroy tennis balls too. It can be difficult finding decent balls for them. They’re expensive but the Playology beef scented ones are pretty great.

    So, my GSP's 10 months now and he L O V E S chasing a ball - any size! You're so right about standard tennis balls: destroyed almost instantly.... Chuckit! every time; my two have lasted 6 months daily use and are still fine. Have you tried a larger but also sturdy ball? We have horses and Freddie (Farty Freddie...😂😂) just loves their boredom-buster feeder balls. They're like a small football that he 'noses' around at high speed - they're strong and have a little heft cos they're equine safe 😀 I don't put feed inside by the way; no need.

    A Lacrosse ball might be a good alternative. When I was a kid, we had a dog who delighted in destroying balls of any kind. He couldn't make a dent in my lacrosse ball and whined with frustration at this insult to his doghood.

    Yes! I was awakened one night by my Scout making awful choking and gagging houses. He had one of those giant rawhide 'bones'.A piece he had chewed off was stuck Innis throat and swelled up from the moisture his body produced. Luckily I could just barely reach it, I without my removing it I am sure he would have choked to death.

    We have 2 gsps! One pure bred, then a year after we got him we rescued a girl :-) they are so different than other dogs, but also so different than each other at times!
    Zeus doesn't swim or go in water at all, Holly loves swimming with us. Zeus is very social, loves other dogs but isn't interested in the ball, Holly fetches the ball all day & doesn't care if she sees another dog. Holly is very good & won't run away, sometimes Zeus will be naughty & nick off & wont come back on until we get close enough to him.
    Holly is very polite & patient, Zeus will 'talk' until he gets what he wants. But Zeus is gett gentle at eating unlike snappy Holly but we think that's the way she was mistreated before we got her! Gsps are not like other dogs but are an absolute delight & have been such great company for me in iso. Cuddles, snuggles, laughs & fun, afternoon naps & keeping me in a routine with getting up and also going to bed!! Fantastic breed, totally worth the effort!!

    • @Tammy_Bashore
      @Tammy_Bashore  3 роки тому +2

      Antlers are awesome! Mine love antlers. Careful with the Nyla bones - mine would chew on them and then the nylon would cut their teeth and some would come off and they would choke on pieces.

      @sabrinaforeman4900 3 роки тому

      Habitat 605 - Tammy Bashore Oh yeah, we always supervise him with anything! And we never leave anything in his kennel when we go out, just in case he bites off a chunk and chokes. Why not train them to give you the ball in your hand. It is so easy to train a GSP to do this. My buddy Zeke loves to play ball all day long. He will every time bring the ball back to me and put it in my hand.

    • @Tammy_Bashore

      @@Tammy_Bashore I will agree with that for sure. The ball gets really slimy.. I use a towel for Zeke to give me the ball. Zeke is my grandson so he gets to sleep over a couple times a month. Check the AKC for breed clubs, there may be one near you. NEVER PURCHASE FROM THE INTERNET. Attend local dog shows, you can meet breeders there. Be sure to inspect IN PERSON the kennel or home of the breeder if a hobby breeder that you are planning on purchasing from. Vet verified health certificate from a local to the breeder vet. DO NOT PURCHASE FROM A PET STORE. Many purchase from wholesalers that purchase from puppy mills. This will be your companion for many years, lots of caution and knowledge will save you heartache down the road.
