I actually heard Levine conduct two operas at the Met in the 1990's - Die Walkure and Ariadne auf Naxos. Without going into the interpretations, strictly on the sensuality of the sounds he was able to conjure up from the Met Orchestra, it was an amazing unforgettable experience. Today's Met Orchestra is still good but has lost that soft sexy edge imo.

It’s shame he was such an utterly horrible person.

@@vocalfan2397 He faced numerous accusations of abuse and sexual misconduct. Don’t take it from me, here’s The NY Times. www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2018/03/12/arts/music/james-levine-metropolitan-opera.amp.html

@@vocalfan2397 I like this article in particular. The comments contain other stories of his abuse. kennethwoods.net/blog1/2021/03/18/james-levine/
I don’t know if you’re an orchestral musician yourself or just a hobbyist, but you must never have been subjected to the abuse of a conductor before. Once you have, come back to me and see if your opinion has changed. You don’t believe conductors could be bad people until you get screamed at by one in rehearsal.

@@samdajellybeenie14 Levine was certainly no saint and I guess got what was coming to him, through not a jail sentence, but the article you cite is obsessional, heavily hyperbolic in the section about the BSO, and very mean-spirited throughout. Not knowing what battles to pick, the writer picks every single one he can find--and perhaps then some--and writes about each at enormous length.
