Great lesson! I wanted to play that lick like that for so long. I was doing it in 3rd position because I could not bend until recently. This is much more bluesy and the way that Sugar Blue sounded. I actually heard Sugar Blue play that live a number of times over the years.
Hey Tomlin, thanks for the video. I just got a D diatonic harp, but it doesn't seem to align with the notes. Any idea what's the matter? It's a East top 10 hole diatonic in D.
Tomlin Leckie Tnx! I'm doing it, but I'm not totally satisfied with my 3 draw half-step bend, especially at the end. Is it normal for someone who's been playing for quite a few years to have trouble getting it in pitch and controlling it?
It's in the key of A minor and it is played on a D harmonica. Don't worry - your ear "muscle" will get stronger with practice. I certainly know mine did :-)
I always have a problem keeping track of the beat and rhythm, do you count out loud in your mind or more by feel? Also what are some ways that I can work I this?
I appreciate it Tomlin. I try to blow a little myself, but Not as accomplished as you, I improvise a lot & I learn a lot from you man, thanks. You can check me out on JP Paradise
Norman Kirchner second position on a d harp gives you the notes of A minor and A major, depending on the notes you play. On a C harp 1st position, if you playing the major scale, but start on the A note (3whole bend or 6 draw), thats A minor also. its the natural minor, 4th position if you're talking harmonica
Dominique Perreira that's a great reply and not what I expected. I'll need head scratch on that a bit and try it out some while I stare at some music scales
Norman Kirchner no prob. there this site called "www.angelfire.com/tx/myquill/Harpscript.html " which is a scale generator for harmonica. Easy to learn to use, Very useful for seeing which scales are available, the relationship betwen notes and all the modes if you understand them. Happy Harpin'
I think the key to getting A minor is the half step bend on hole 3 draw. This bends the C# down to C. In a recent video, Tomlin recommends an App, ‘insTuner' - this helps check the accuracy of your bends (highly recommended).
Hi Norman, positions are not major or minor. The notes you choose to play in a specific position are Major or Minor. So for example, I can play A major or A minor on a D harmonica but I can also play A major or A minor on an A harmonic in 1st position. Hope that helps - positions are mystical :-)
I thought it's ok I won't return it. still works fine almost. Then two weeks in I find out the 2 being a dud on the draw is wayyy more of a problem than I thought. I'm probably going cave and get a new D just to play this song while driving.. God damb Horner to hell im never buying another piece from them.

This is the best (most accurate) lesson that I have seen for this lick.
Thanks man!!
Great lesson. A must know riff for harp players.
Thanks Kerry :-)
Thank you Tomlin!! this has been on my learn-to-play list for over a year.
Awesome! Now you've got it :-)
nice man!
Cheers! Such a good tune! 👍

Awesome to hear John - It's great when you can revisit something you've played in the past and improve upon it :-)
amazing thank so much for doing these little lessions
My pleasure Brandon :-)
Great Tomlin. Thanks so much.
No problem my friend :-)
Thank You
Your videos are greatly appreciated. Will you do one on schoolboy cleve strange letter blues?
I'm glad you like the videos Josh - I'll have a look at Schoolboy Clever Strange Letter Blues
Can you do a video on the main body harp solo and outro riffs?
great stuff, can you maybe give us a lesson on Huey Lewis' Working for A Living harmonica solo?
Nice tone ,well done 🎶👍 do you show the end improvising part of the tune?
Hey Tomlin, big thank you for the lessons, my playing is improving dramatically which I'm applying to the gigs I'm doing. Cheers man
That's awesome to hear Lee :-)
Can you consider analyzing Night Owl Blues?
hi tomlin what make of harp are you using , use Special 20 doesnt sound the same?
i love the lick videos
A tutorial on When the Levee Breaks would be awesome, just sayin. Thumbs up if anyone else thinks the same.
itd be kinda hard, i think you probably mean the Led zeppelin version, that would be amazing, but its also played backwards isnt it?
George Lumsden forget that backwards stuff. When the Levee Breaks is a cool bluesy song, check out Zepparella covering it on UA-cam
Great suggestion :-)
I don't think it is played backwards - I'll check it out...
Reverse echo/delay effect added I believe...notes are not actually played backwards... but the repeats are reversed...
Hey Tomlin, thanks for the video. I just got a D diatonic harp, but it doesn't seem to align with the notes. Any idea what's the matter? It's a East top 10 hole diatonic in D.
I’m using a Special 20 Hohner. I cannot get the required C note (the 3 hole draw) without an intense bend. It doesn’t sound right.
I'm sure someone has pointed this out to you but the key signature you have up is A major. A natural Minor has no sharps or flats.
Gr8 lesson, Tomlin! You do it so smoothly! Just like Sugar! How advanced is this, in your opinion?
Cheers bro! I would say this is intermediate according to my levels - tomlinharmonicalessons.com/what-level-are-you/

Sounds great Tomlin! I’m just wondering what brand of D harp you’re using. I’ve been trying to play it on a Special 20. Is that okay?
I see a lot of these but this is the only one that sounds perfect?
Totally agree its in G man???or my hearing is totally shot😢
It's in the key of A minor and it is played on a D harmonica. Don't worry - your ear "muscle" will get stronger with practice. I certainly know mine did :-)
Thanks 😂 I'll persevere, certainly wouldn't argue with the man 😊
😂 persevered got out the D, hey presto, thanks 😅
hey can you make a tutorial of the harmonica solo in heaven nor hell from volbeat?:)
I'll check it out :-)
I always have a problem keeping track of the beat and rhythm, do you count out loud in your mind or more by feel? Also what are some ways that I can work I this?
I would practice counting out loud in your mind. Eventually it will become subconscious :-)
I appreciate it Tomlin. I try to blow a little myself, but Not as accomplished as you, I improvise a lot & I learn a lot from you man, thanks. You can check me out on JP Paradise
Is Sugar Blue the most respected LIVING Harp player? Anyone else agree?
i love this song i find its very difficult thi
and it was very helpful the repeated 2 hole draw excersise
A nice tasty lick to intersperse between these is -4/ -4 ____ +4 -3/ + 4 -3/ -2 (56) (56)
Is this an Suzuki Olive?
Hi Victor, yes it is :-)
Is it in A minor, or just second position A?
I thought C would give you an A minor
Norman Kirchner second position on a d harp gives you the notes of A minor and A major, depending on the notes you play.
