Excellent lesson as always - one of my favourite Beatles tune, their first "hit" and such a good song from 1962. John Lennon never got enough credit for his harmonica playing.
i have tried learning the guitar and tried learning harmonica on so many occasion's , this lockdown as given me so much practice on the guitar i have been able to identify the notes , with you brilliant instruction i can play this , you cant imagine my delight.
Almost 2 years in harmonica. Stopped a while because some holes on my instrument stopped but I bought a new one. Keep helping we self learners, I owe you so much for knowing what I know today. A big sincere thanks!
Aw thank you, you are too kind Manchede :-). You should check out Adam Gussow, Jason Ricci, Liam Ward, Will Wilde amd Ronnie Shellist among others - they are awesome teachers :-)
Love your lessons. Ive improved. Thank you. But, why does the very end sound a different key ? Is that an F i hear ? You didnt cover that. Did John use a chromatic harp ?
Hey! Me again! Wondering about the other harmonica part of the song where the lyrics go, "Someone to love..." Sounds like it's a different key like a G maybe?
Thanks for this content, one of my favorite harp tunes! That is easy to access and have fun with. Next tune will be Train Time from Cream! Although Spoon Full would be easier to learn!
This is NOT how John Lennon played on the recording of “Love Me Do”. He wasn’t using a Diatonic Harmonica (generally called a Blues Harp) as used in this video, but a Chromatic Harmonica in the key of C. That is why the person in this video can’t play the important middle-8 of the song, which has the words “someone to love”, etc. In that section, the button on the Chromatic has to be pushed in to get the f# note. (Only a highly expert player can get an f# on a C Blues Harp.) So if you want to play the whole song then you need to get a C Chromatic Harmonica!
Hi Rod, unfortunately I'm quite strict with my students about playing the 2 draw. The 3 blow does not facilitate as many interesting techniques and doesn't sound as full. Here is a lesson to help you ua-cam.com/video/QTzyM-mq7Qc/v-deo.html
Hey Tomlin would you ever consider doing a play though of the song with a backing track? I am trying to play along to the song with Apple Music and play but it’s hard to know when the licks come in. thank you have a good day!
TOMLIN, I know it's not in your wheelhouse. But would you review the easttop T10-40 ? Your the only one I trust to be honest about it and really test it out right. Please?
C harp in the recording as well, just like this video. Just like piano man, the song uses the most common key harmonica, possibly for convenience purposes.
You are correct, 2D is the same as 3B. The reason why people choose 2D over 3B is because you can bend the 2D for a more Bluesy sound. Which really wouldn't work on the 3B.
Alex Guevara I saw a video I believe from tomlin explaining that you can get more out of at 2 draw then a 3 blow when you start to get good with the tin sandwich. I am just finally getting a sound that isn’t a failed note out of my 2 draw and am loving this song. I am trying to find a tab that plays along with the Beatles though. Keep trying with the 2 draw and eventually you will get it
In case anybody else is playing along to the song and wanted to play the other part (the first time played while "someone to love somebody new etc." is sung, the second only played) I found it as -3bb +3 (or -2) -2bb -2 -2bb +2 +1 with - meaning draw and + meaning blow
Why don't you use a hole 3 blow instead of a hole 2 draw? It would be much easier than going from a hole 4 draw to a hole 2 draw? Obviously, a hole 2 draw is the same not as hole 3 blow. I find it better to play those 3 G notes after the C note on hole 4 blow as hole 3 blow then hole 2 draw then hole 3 blow. That to me gives a sharper cut off between the notes. Try it and see for yourself. A diatonic harp always offers an important opportunity to play the same note in two places. Draw hole 2 or blow hole 3. This can and should be used to facilitate playing and avoid the 2 hole draw to 4 hole move. A hole 3 blow is far more easily followed by a 4 hole blow/draw.
blow all your air out after lick 1 and also after lick 2 ( listen to him at the beginning of the video when he sings the song - pay attention how he blows out the air, you can hear it)
Can’t get the high note on a C harp..just off…works on most scales..not C…I’m getting a Dd/C#…hopefully that will do it…cannot understand my me C harp sound off
It’s very helpful to show musical notation. Now would it kill you to actually utter note names once in a while? Why must we be so rigidly and dogmatically anti-intellectual?

Limpide, merci beaucoup !
Love your lessons. Ive improved. Thank you. But, why does the very end sound a different key ? Is that an F i hear ? You didnt cover that. Did John use a chromatic harp ?
Very good lesson, I learned the song very quickly, Thanks!
The harmonica solo in the 2nd bridge is just as important but no-one ever addresses it
Hey! Me again! Wondering about the other harmonica part of the song where the lyrics go, "Someone to love..." Sounds like it's a different key like a G maybe?
Are you using tongue blocking or pucker for this song? Thanks. You have the best music lessons on youtube!
I'm using lip-pursing (puckering). Thank you for your kind words :-)
Have you got a guitar tab version of this pal?
Thanks for this content, one of my favorite harp tunes! That is easy to access and have fun with. Next tune will be Train Time from Cream! Although Spoon Full would be easier to learn!
There is another harp part. When they sing. "Someone to love...".
I think that was played on a different harp in G.
How about the harmonica solo? Lesson in the future?
Could you do a lesson for 'The Cardiff Afterlife' harmonica solo by the Manic Street Preachers please?
What about the instrumental bridge?
Simply to say it looks so simple when you explain... 😜
I have a g harmonica and can't play the F sharp how all yals sounds like. I've got the Fender Blues Delux
How do you play the bridge part where it goes "Someone to love" etc. the 3rd note in that section is an F# which is NOT in the key of C?
This is NOT how John Lennon played on the recording of “Love Me Do”. He wasn’t using a Diatonic Harmonica (generally called a Blues Harp) as used in this video, but a Chromatic Harmonica in the key of C.

So if you want to play the whole song then you need to get a C Chromatic Harmonica!
Is it OK to substitute 3 blow for the 2 draw? I find it easier to do it that way? Still having a bit of problem with playing .2 draw.

I’m having to do a quick change to a G harmonica to play the bridge, is there another way to do it?
Great lesson on the majority of the song but does John Lennon switch to a G harp on the Bridge?
Yes!
Is it ok if I play it on my G diatonic harmonica ? It is the only harmonica I have
Thanks! What key harmonica should you use to play along with the recording in second position?
C harp in the recording as well, just like this video. Just like piano man, the song uses the most common key harmonica, possibly for convenience purposes.
which harp is this you're using here?
Where is the instrumental solo?
Hello , and the second part of the song ?
Lennon plays a strange sounding trill note on some of the blows. Is this a tongue roll. Great lesson as usual. Thanks
I know exactly what you mean Anthony but I'm not sure how he is doing it. If anyone else knows please chime in... Thanks, T
Might be a growing vibration in the back of the throat.
Your 2Ds are 3Bs on my C Diatonic.
wheres the bridge!!!!!!!!!!!
My 2 just does not sound that high! Why why? Or as loud! I have a lee oskar c major
Why do you choose draw 2 when blow 3 is I think the same note?
You are correct, 2D is the same as 3B. The reason why people choose 2D over 3B is because you can bend the 2D for a more Bluesy sound. Which really wouldn't work on the 3B.
@@djrickmendez255 thanks, i came here just looking for this answer.
özcan Ugur: Definitely! How long have you been playing? A little over a year for me. Where are you located? I'm in New York city!
I keep struggling with sliding to 2 ugh
fish the mighty I used to but now I got it down
Why not just blow 3?
Alex Guevara I saw a video I believe from tomlin explaining that you can get more out of at 2 draw then a 3 blow when you start to get good with the tin sandwich. Every tutorial miss the second part.....why?
I dont understand the second part of beginning my harmonica is c doesn't sound right second part
In case anybody else is playing along to the song and wanted to play the other part (the first time played while "someone to love somebody new etc." is sung, the second only played) I found it as
-3bb +3 (or -2) -2bb
-2 -2bb +2 +1 with - meaning draw and + meaning blow
Awesome, thanks for sharing!
What’s 3bb and 2bb mean?
well, I just learned how to play love me do , so thanks, and besides I think ur really cute haha

I wondered the same, but i'm a beginner ...
I don't think you can play the whole song (especially the extended solo with the low note) unless you have a chromatic harmonica
8:13 when I get to this part, I am out of breath
blow all your air out after lick 1 and also after lick 2 ( listen to him at the beginning of the video when he sings the song - pay attention how he blows out the air, you can hear it)
How come nobody does that fantastic nasty trill that Lennon does? I want to know how to do that!
I do it
BEst over seen
Isn’t this just all the intro? Where is the verse of ‘love, love me do - you know i love you so pleeease love me do-oo’
He’s just playing the actual harmonica part in the song, not the vocal melody
In the middle J Lennon make an amazing solo, where is it ???
Hi Carlos, I've not done a lesson on it. I might do one in the future :-)
I cheated I used the 3 blow instead of the 2 draw
You look like an overexposed fallout character in the thumbnail 😂
Can’t get the high note on a C harp..just off…works on most scales..not C…I’m getting a Dd/C#…hopefully that will do it…cannot understand my me C harp sound off
don't understand what this man mean all I do is listen to the sound and the copy it I guess I am just that skillful
ok now Im prepared for prison. Lets rob that bank!
This is when sucks & blows is a good thing ..
It’s very helpful to show musical notation. Now would it kill you to actually utter note names once in a while? Why must we be so rigidly and dogmatically anti-intellectual?
Why so snarky? Why don't you just read the notes from the notation?
Why do these dudes who teach you some less popular musical instruments always look so weird?
does it matter whether you draw on 2 or blow on 3? @tomlinleckie
