Clapton is an artist who can really capture his emotions in his performances. The notes played and how he plays them. One that will always haunt me and still brings tears to my eyes is "Tears in Heaven". He wrote it for his 4 year old son Conor, who tragically died in a fall from a 53rd story window of a NY City apartment.
Do I get blown away on the song you said the Beatles actually it's George Harrison solo album and it's the same band from Derek and the Dominos backing up that whole album except for Duane Allman on that album All Things Must Pass
Dude, I know exactly how you feel. I still remember the first time I heard this - more than forty years ago. Clapton just had a straight line from his heart to his fingers.
His compositions are a big-deal, too. THORN TREE IN THE GARDEN... Doesn't everything think that's about a lost girlfriend? Well, listtening to Bobby on his Sunday night gig in Austin, we learn it's about a favorite dog he asked a friend to keep for him. The jackass gave the dog away instead! "Walking the streets alone - it's my fault."
During the period, which was shortly after Eric's departure from Cream, he had a long affair with Patti Boyd, the wife of George Harrison. When she went back to George, Eric climbed out of his depression to do this album in 1970. Most of the songs, more specifically "Layla", were directed toward her in an effort to win her back. Robin Thicke most recently did the same thing, meaning he wrote an entire album dedicated to his wife in an effort to win her back. In Robin's case it failed, in Eric's case only initially. Eric then fell into a spiral of drugs and alcohol which took him years to climb out of. She later then left George and she and Eric were married in 1979. Eric however still took many years after the marriage to get straight. With every song on the album you can feel his need and emotion. The chorus on this song is a little Lennon and McCartney like, but it is all blues/rock. Nevertheless, even when Eric came out of the other end of the spiral, one which would have left him dead, it took him many years to finally return to this album and do these songs in public. By the way, Duane and Eric made Derek. The bassist was Carl Radle, the drummer was Jim Gordon (who later went insane and murdered his mother), the writer and player of the piano part in "Layla", and the pianist and co-vocalist was Bobby Whitlock.
Also it is great to understand how this band came about. Clapton left CREAM(listen to Badge) and started BLIND FAITH(Can't Find My Way Home). He wasn't particularly too happy and began hanging out more with Delaney and Bonnie and Friends. From there he and some of those band members worked with George Harrison on ALL THINGS MUST PASS(My Sweet Lord), they were also the foundation for DEREK and the DOMINOES(Layla, Little Wing) and CLAPTON'S band on his first solo album(Let It Rain). And from CREAM to CLAPTON'S first SOLO ALBUM and everything in between was less than two years. Not to mention the solo on WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS by The Beatles.
Tremendous passion on this album, one of the best of all time. Also try "Have You ever Loved A Woman", "Nobody Loves You When you're Down & Out" and almost any other song on this double album
That was always one of my favorites by Clapton. Yeah, expressive guitar. Nice nice reaction. Good heartfelt reaction in authentic way. Thanks for posting this one.
VERY sad disturbing story. And Jim (although a drummer) was the one who wrote and played the beautiful piano piece at the end of Layla. But you're right. Sad, sad story.
I'll always nominate this album as the quintessential guitar album. Bobby Whitlock on keyboards and other guitars, and doing the raspy backing vocals, along with several compositions. It's truly a band's album although many folks list two names. I hope you'll work your way thru the whole album - maybe not in REACTION videos but it's a wonderful album to spend a week with.
I so appreciate that you listened all the way thru before reacting, instead of talking thru this awesome song or stopping/starting several times....I feel this way every single time I hear this song ♥️
I really, really like your reaction to this classic that I too put in its own category; one of those transcendant masterpieces that are destined to be listened to til the end of time, because they resonate with so many people.
It is an amazingly beautiful song and I remember when I first heard it in 1970, just like d man here, that guitar solo blew me away. The emotion in it is so incredible. Eric and Duane together was a very rare combination of two supremely gifted artists at the height of their powers. Epic video too, I love this guy and his reactions! The transcendental power of music to bring people together.
Clapton has said he used the Fender Champ 20 (a SMALL amp) for this album. It was pricey then, but still cheap by those standards. Today, it's usually $90-110.
The champs today are solid state, a real tube champ like the one he played on this album is gonna run you around $2000. Or you can get a blues jr which is essentially the modern day equivalent for 500-600
There's one thing I appreciate about some of the reaction channels. It makes me realize I heard many songs during the 70s and 80s but I never really listened to them. There's a big difference between casual listening and internalized listening. For the first time I listened to this song in all of it's pathos. Eric Clapton and his band bring out that indescribable "it" factor. To me this song encapsulates the dark side of an entire decade known as "the 70".
Eric Clapton and Duane Allllman were Masters of Emotional Guitar Phrasing, never in hurry, always slowing their Feelings to Flow through their Fingers, straight from their Souls!
It’s magnificence and beauty and excellence in musicianship and composition.. I feel so lucky to have been able to grow up while some of the greatest music ever written was being done! Excellent reaction my man.. perfect 🎼✌️❤️👊
I love this song, so much angst and it's from the heart. Clapton fell in love with his best friend's (George Harrison) wife Pattie and wrote 'Layla' for her. The Derek & the Dominoes sole album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" refers to his trying to woo her. He stole the band from Delaney and Bonnie after touring with them. Sadly they only made that one album, halfway through their 2nd Clapton got too paranoid on heroin to leave his house. That entire album is worth listening to.
@@jamfamily4287 George Harrison was OK with it. He was a bit of a player himself. He said that if it was going to be anyone, he was glad it was his friend Eric.
Eric didn't exactly "steal" the band from Delaney and Bonnie, they were all ready to bale out from that train wreck! They had a very tumultuous history and a revolving door of players in their band, including, among others, Eric himself, Gregg and Duane Allman, George Harrison, Leon Russell, Dave Mason, Chris Stainton, Rita Coolidge, Bobby Keys, Jim Price, Jim Keltner, hell everybody went through there! The list is long! If you look back at those players, there's the nucleus for Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" band too! Truly a sad deal, because they were supremely talented!
