Terry Prachett said the idea for the Luggage came from D&D games, where they couldn't figure how the heroes dragged so much stuff along, so they reckoned they had a travelling luggage trundling along behind them.
And also a woman who was pulling along a suitcase on wheels across cobble stones and Pratchett heard the clattering and thought of a host of small feet carrying the luggage forward.
Arh, the luggage, even in the Discworld it is a malevolent wonder.
