Is This the BEST Fantasy City?

  • Ankh-Morpork, the biggest city in the Discworld - Terry Pratchett's fabled fantasy series. In my humble (yet unwavering) opinion, it has the best worldbuilding in a metropolis ever written in all fantasy literature.
But why? What in its writing make it so alive, so irresistible? Well this is what we're here to find out in this urban episode of the Worldbuilding Tower.
And what tower has even better worldbuilding than the Worldbuilding Tower? Well, that'd be the Tower of Art, a giant spire sprouting from the Unseen University in the middle of Ankh-Morpork.
Don't believe me? Well, give it a read.

Evidently I do not own the Discworld, it is a series of books by Sir Terry Pratchett:

Really good video, and I'll definitely be using this strategy in the future! Wish there were more specific references to how Terry Pratchett goes about giving these various perspectives through his many many protagonists.

And you got a point, I'm often struggling to find just the right amount of detail. I got better at this, I'm still far far from flawless :/ it comes with experience I suppose, so thanks for the criticism as well! It speeds up my evolution :)

My favorite part of Anamorkpork is that they legalize crime, and the thevies guild.

I have bad news: I've got nothing published yet! But I've been working on it for the past 4 years. I'm doing this as fast as I can - but it is a remarkably slow process.
Recently I've been thinking about storytelling video (rather than story analysis videos like I usually do), so you might see some of my writing over on tiktok, when this idea matures :)

said it time and time again, terrys satire of the dystopian britain is absolutley unmatched, not just britain, just his satire entirely, he was a master at world building, character building and pulling poltical movements and woke cultures apart through story

    • @kibbleofdoom

Woke culture's indeed! Like the dwarves and their attitude on gender amirite?

    • @kibbleofdoom
      @kibbleofdoom 29 днів тому

Or the woke culture of severe racism between dwarves and trolls. Sam Vimes can be pretty woke too, enacting police reform and accepting citizen oversight. To say less about his ideas on boots. Reg shoe protesting and advocating for undead rights, the discussion of how poverty is criminalized, I'm wondering what woke cultures you are referring to?

Congratulations; I want to read more about this apothecary shop! It reminds me of the Thieves World anthologies. One location (in the anthologies it's a city, here a single shop) with many stories centered around the given space. All different people, factions, motives, means and ways but one central place.

I’ve seen a lot of videos on how to write cities as locations, as historical places, even as just broad cultures. But this one is what I really needed to see. You’re showing me how to write a city as a *character*. As a living thing that has a personality behind the thousands of individual lives. Brilliant advice, thank you so much

This is a very entertaining way of world building a location!
A little context before I start. The Charlotta is a gigantic tower in the centre of the city of Katon. It's the political, cultural, and financial hub of the city. Anyone who's anyone has some form of presence on one of the many floors. But Katon has also seen better days, its influence has waned over the region in recent decades.
    anyhoo...
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    Story one - Grotesques:
Perched on the north side of the Charlotta, about midway up, are two grotesques. Each would claim (if anybody had ever thought to ask them) that they had developed more aesthetic faults than the other. Watching over the city below for centuries, the pair have seen their fair share of storms, freezes, and acts of malicious masonry.
“I got chunks out of me, all up me left haunch!” One would decry
“At least you can see your haunches, mine have been covered in moss for decades!” The other would retort.
“Well, at least you didn’t have your ear ripped clear off by that idiot who fell from the top floor”
“He was aiming for me! You distracted him!”
"Sure, just like you got that wren to nest on you last year. When I’d been chatting her up for weeks!”
The pair are interrupted by a voice, muffled by water and unintelligible
“Bloody Gargoyles, think they’re so special”
“ooh, look at me, I’m a necessary drainage function”
    In unison “Twats”
    ---------------------------------
Story two - Thin Lips, Thin Hair, Thin Frame:
No one could recall a time when she hadn't been sat at her desk in the entrance hall, no one could recall hiring her. The foreman and office managers all assumed she must have been hired by one of their predecessors. Those very predecessors believed the same.
Thin lips, thin hair, thin frame. As much an institution as the Charlotta it's self.
If you were to look at the thousands of portraits and painting gracing the walls and halls of the Charlotta. You would see Leaders and Guild Masters, Old Kings and Proctors. And stood with them, thin lips, thin hair, thin frame.
In the much older, far grander paintings, during Katon's ascendency, A young woman. The later paintings, a crone.
Thin lips, thin hair, thin frame. As much a presence as the Charlotta it's self.

I love how you followed my energy and went full Ankh-Morepork as well! The gargoyles could easily be having their dispute from the walls of the Tower of Art and the idea of "no one could recall hiring her." is pratchian by nature!
