During winter, best enjoyed sitting in a cabin with the woodstove roaring, looking out the picture window, sipping on a fresh coffee.
I'm sure this give a mild idea of what it was like on Superior the night the Edmund Fitgerald went down. Now we know why. Thanks Jon for giving us a glimpse into the raw power of Mother Nature.
Crazy part is those are some smaller ones😬
@@Krill421 absolutely.
Scary Felicia
@@JohnnyLaps Indeed it would be
I’m always looking up “Lake Superior Storm Waves” on UA-cam for that very season, especially in November. Very few results are satisfying because the view is from the shoreline but I agree with you, this is a frightening glimpse.
I grew up on the shores of this lake. It's moods spoke to my soul, which is probably why I became a merchant mariner and chose to work in the tempestuous waters of Antarctica and Alaska. I still think of it as my home water.
What an interesting life you must lead
I grew up on the shore of the Detroit river, but every summer I was on lake Superior and Lake Michigan. Such awe-inspiring bodies of water. They speak to the imagination of the adult as much as the imagination of the child.
Well Jim, I grew up on the shore of Superior, also. My grandfather was a commercial fisherman out of Grand Marais Mich.
@@kevinthorrington2131 My story started in Munising.
You might know my Uncle Tom? He lived in Munising his entire life. My paternal grandparents immigrated from England in late 1800’s to work in the copper mines in the copper country. My dads father entered the coastguard early 1900’s and retired from the coastguard in Grand Marais as a captain. My mothers family were French Canadians who immigrated to Grand Marais as commercial fisherman. When fishing was over for winter grandfather was a captain on saltwater ships to guide them through the Great Lakes. I went to northern Michigan university and moved away. I’m a fourth generation from Grand Marais. I have one aunt still living in GM, she is the last of my family in GM. She will be 101 years old this January. I get back to GM a couple times a year to visit. I’ll be 60 soon, I plan on retiring in two years. Hopefully I can spend more time in GM. There’s a fisherman’s memorial at the coastguard station for all the fisherman who were lost on Lake Superior. The memorial depicts a fisherman standing on the bow of his fish tug entering the Chicago harbor. That Is a picture taken of my grandfather. It’s a small world, take care!
There is no feeling like the one that makes you feel small. Weather like that has a scary way of humbling you, and making you feel excited all at the same time.
Perfect ! Growing up on lake you have to watch it like your family. All about observation and balance.
The beautiful and sometimes frightening anger of Lake Superior never ceases to amaze.
Superior its said never gives up her dead when the gales of December come early ! I live on the east end of Erie and we,ve been pounded twice recently. Gusts up to 70. And as i write this im listening to gusts of 50 or so outside my window. Stay safe everyone. Mother nature is powerful and indifferent !
I grew up on the spectacular lakes shores. When you standing in the warmth of your home watching a storm pound and rage and scream, it humbles you and makes you feel so insignificant. The sheer power that Lady possesses is truly a thing to behold. I would so love to camp out for several days there. Thank you for this!
I like standing on the shoreline or on a pier at night during the winter. The great lakes turn into gurgling monsters at night. The most humbling feeling
I lived half a mile from Lake Erie growing up. I would wander over during winter storms just to watch the fury. My family thought I was crazy but the power of the waves was magnetic to me. Of course I made sure to not go out on the piers or retentions, but I definitely stood on the beach...along with whatever other crazy person was doing the same.
Lake Superior and Lake Erie are not even comparable
Not crazy, just being drawn to the spectacular fury of mother nature doing what it can and does do.
@@GamingYearly you gatekeeping lakes bro?
Hard to believe that this lake is glass calm at times. Amazing to witness the power of Lake Superior.
That's exactly how it was when I visited last year. Watching this video, I couldn't believe it was the same lake.
Superior when she is angry…love it! I sure do miss living in Marathon and spending many hours hiking the shoreline. Thanks for sharing.
I can clearly remember camping on the South Shore of superior when winter was threatening. Even a hundred yards into the Sandy forest, the air and ground still thundered with the surf.
Sometimes I still dream of that.
The Northern gale winds across Lake Superior. Amazing video Jon. November 2020 just incredible video. Thanks
I grew up summers on Lake Erie and the waters changed from hour to hour, a storm could whip up in no time and it was all we could do to scramble up the hill from the beach to our cottage before a storm broke loose! You grow to have a deep respect for the Lake's changeability
There are only two seasons for us Lakers, going to the Lake and waiting to go to the Lake! Once it's in your blood there no going back, you will pine for the Lake forever
Wow, the power of Lake Superior is very ocean like. I live near the ocean and often open my window to hear the it during storms or high winds, very soothing. Thanks for sharing. :) :)
The Great Lakes are freshwater inland seas. They can be -very, very- dangerous in bad storms.
Brilliant work. I started singing Gordon Lightfoot Edmund Fitzgerald in my head.
I still enjoy your Giant Quest muskie videos.
@@thelonesomefisherman7425 cool thanks
I can’t imagine getting caught far out in that lake. We’ve been caught out in really rough water just coming in from the Slate islands where it ripped off the top from our 19 foot Grew 75 hp . All that was left was the aluminum frame and a foot of water in the bottom of the boat trying to get in to Terrace Bay. The pump couldn’t get the water out fast enough. That was scary. Some 40 years ago. Thank God I was with a guy that grew up on the Slate islands. His dad was the light keeper out there for 35 years. What a amazing place and a great job. Thanks. 🇨🇦👍
We have seen Superior like that on the Michigan side. It was very difficult to stand in the wind. Such power.
The power of Lake Superior is amazing! I love it every time I get to visit.
My mind was screaming ocean when I know it's fresh water. Epic that freezing spray coming off the lake through the pines trees by the shore. I wanted to be there.
The only reason these lakes are not considered inland seas is because they are freshwater. They otherwise behave like a sea including creating weather patterns!
We lived near Marquette for a couple years. After the mosquito invasion in the spring it was one of the best places we ever lived. Still have dreams about the pine trees, rocks and the lake.
Nice-haven’t seen waves like that since the night the Fitz went down. I was on the south shore in Marquette (Mi) upper harbor watching breakers on the wall hit 35-40’
You captured the power of mother nature perfectly there my eleven friend, I'm 20 minutes from the Atlantic and that's a familiar sight...but on a lake? Wow!
That is just totally amazing. It's hard to believe that a inland lake will get that bad.
Don’t forget about the Edmund Fitzgerald
@@jameslawlor1404 I know right! People tragically underestimate the Great Lakes, which can be worse than any ocean out there!
That wind storm was B A N A N A S. We just got our power back. We’re on Lake Michigan, and the waves were pretty impressive there as well.
OMG those waves were nasty so powerful On Superior that day I can imagine those out on a freighter in those waves I myself would be very Ill and afraid for my life. epic footage Jon thank you for showing us lake Superior at its's worse .
Oooooh I love body surfing waves (half that size) in Lake Huron in AUGUST lol! I can't comprehend getting out in freezing cold Lake Michigan, or even worse, Lake Superior waves EVER!
Wow that’s amazing! Superior is certainly showing her power.
Was always a great day waking up and walking down the boardwalk!
Beautiful, awe-inspiring Lake Superior. Thank you. I needed to see this beauty today!
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald all over again!!! Thank goodness for the national weather service.
Such a powerful lake
I love living in Michigan, it's just beautiful!!! Lake Superior is stunning, also the magical Pictured Rock's, these you HAVE to see!!!!!!
That was cool! You could see how windy it was when you showed the trees an grasses. Thanks for risking your life for us. Glad a tree didn't fall on you! Cheers
Now that is powerful! Thanks Jon!
Thanks for capturing this power of nature. Wish I was there!
Thanks so much for this footage. The energy of the great lakes is magnetic...the changing moods are almost impossible process.
As a kid we used to surf the storms of September at Terrace Bay. Sometimes used a rubber raft for a very unique experience.
Love the footage, Jon! She was ripping for sure. Definitely some of the biggest I have seen on Superior that I can recall. Pretty special that we get to call this sacred place home!
When lake Superior is at calm , she is beautiful. When she is at unrest, it is a living nightmare on this Earth.
Thank you for filming nature's beauty in such tough conditions! I used to bundle up and sit on the beach in weather like that when I lived in Marquette, Michigan. Had to lean into the wind to remain upright - miss it terribly.
Just amazing how the lake changes. Great video and thanks for sharing.
Wow, thats quite the storm!
Wow Mother Nature is Powerful 🙌🏽
That is majestic…reminds me of the ocean scene in Dune. The one with Kyle MacLachlan.
Living near the Jersey shore, my favorite times was going to the ocean and a storm raged. Such power and majesty.
This was magnificent! I’ve always wanted to see a stormy Lake Superior in person. This video will do for now. Thank you!
Thanks Margaret! It's something else
I don't even know how to describe that raw power. Stunning footage!
It was like this last year up in the UP!!!! Crazy wind, waves!!!
Thanks for filming that! Nature at its fiercest!
Looks cold lol -- quite a view you had though. I always get nervous around water when its crazy like this! Thanks for the upload!
The first thing I think of when I see this incredible footage plus your footage previously shown on your Fall Storm on Lake Superior is those poor sailors on the Edmond Fitzgerald.
Incredible power and yet on other days incredibly tranquil. Again awesome footage Jon as always unless it was Erin holding the camera - lol
Big lake, big waves!
Thank you for filming that! Knew we could count on ya. Those looked rowdy!
Craziness! Thanks for sharing that with us. I live in St.Catharines so I have Lake Ontario and it doesn't do that.
Can’t believe this is a fresh water lake .. wow 😮
Cold winds blow across the harbor,
Cold winds on the inland sea,
Same winds that cold our fathers,
Cold winds calling me...
I'm from Ireland and I have been out off the west coast of Ireland in fair weather and the swells are crazy, I've also seen it rage and beat against our West coast thankfully inland on bad days. I live in the east however and have been out to the entry point (for lack of a better term) to the deadly north sea before, from the Irish sea up toward Northern Scotland and again it wasn't even close to being at its worst that day weather wise and even still it was an experience, let me tell you, they say its up there with the Bering sea as one of the more deadly stretches of water in the world. Came here from the Gordon Lightfoot song, genuinely wasn't expecting anywhere near the kind of power I've seen on those stretches of water on an inland lake, maybe because I think it's hard for someone who has never seen it to truly get their head around its immense size, but wow the power of that lake would put the fear of God in anyone. RIP to the people who lost their lives that day or any other on that majestic lake.
The wind in the wires, made a tattle-tale sound.
Tornadoes and straight line 70+ mph winds. Can’t believe I spent a night in the basement in Wisconsin mid December.
So beautiful - so scary! Love the Great Lakes - in all seasons!!
Wow!!! That is brutal!! Hope you are safe!
In Shock, when you have been swimming there this summer, hello to "Old Woman Bay"..
Dang, that video brought a chill into my warm house. Please stay safe
Awesome. Awesome in the true sense of the word. There is something energizing and simultaneously humbling at being in the presence of such power. (And no doubt the water was cold that went over your boot!?). Thanks for sharing this clip. Cheers from la Belle Province!
When I saw the wind out here, I was hoping that you would be posting a video of the waves on superior. So when does your surfing video come out?
Nice! As soon as I saw the forecast I had a feeling I would see a video from you. So much power!
Thanks for sharing that. I love the power of Superior!
How beautiful Mother Nature is a little upset! I was not able to see the ocean this year and even though I am afraid of it I still see her beauty! Thank you for going out and filming this! Please stay safe ❤❤🐾🐾
Hey thanks for sharing this! We move to Nipigon in a month...cant wait!
That's scarier than anything I've ever witnessed in Florida.
Tough floating in that…nice
🎶🎵The Witch of November come Stealin🎶🎵
Wow those are some big white caps.
Good stuff, guys. Hooked on your channel.
What a beautiful lake!!!! Beats lake Erie so so much hahaha!!! Also i love a good storm. Glad you got to be a part of it and come out safe!!
Lived through many a Nor'Easter in Duluth as a boy. You captured a good one this year. Beautiful photography is your trademark, but you outdid yourself here. I couldn't help but think about some of your past videos of canoe trips on the summer-tamed big lake. Quite the amazing contrast. Thanks for sharing.
Frightening but amazing at the same time. It is absolutely incredible how violent lake Superior can turn in a storm
Mesmerizing
Scary lake for sure! In 2018 coming back from Vancouver island my flight went right over her its a small ocean hardly a cloud in the sky that day and I had a window seat 🙂
Gitche gumee is indeed a VERY angry lake this time of year, but she's still my favorite.
Wonder what we have in store here, as well. Right now, all of Northern Europe is in a big high pressure zone that barely moves. The weather is clear and nearly wind still, and if I was better equipped and had more time I would perhaps even go out in my canoe in the fjord. But the weather that comes ahead usually builds up in the Atlantic Ocean, south of Greenland. Where the low pressure storms just sit there, growing bigger and bigger. Seems it is so huge now, that the weather you've had at Lake Superior is part of the same system.
It *will* hit Britain, closer to christmas perhaps, and then it's time for us in Scandinavia.
Not a place to be out in a canoe, for sure!
Storms are so terrific 😍
You may want the dry suit and a splash cover for the canoe if you are going out in that! :p
Great day to take out the yak or canoe! 0.00097% chance of survival! Lol great clips Jon!!!
Wow. The power of mother earth .
Respect. She is amazing !
the se wind blown north on gitchi shows it's violent beauty-twas the witch of december come stealing-be safe young voyager
Wow! Now get out there and catch some fish!
Wow, i had no idea a lake could have this much power.
I can’t believe it’s you, lost lakes! Your photography is absolutely beyond stunning. Thank you so much for this. And this is a lake???!!!! I hope we get more snow camping. Love when the two of you are out there.
Hahah thanks so much Karen!
Whoa 😮
Here in Sault Ste. Marie they released a news article from Minnesota calling for waves of 34 ft!
Yeah I saw some reports of that too...looked like it probably hit hardest at the southern end of Pukaskwa where absolutely no one would have seen it
@@LostLakes I lived in Newfoundland for 10 years and have seen some pretty insane waves but i mean that’s the Atlantic Ocean lol this is a lake! Wish I could’ve seen them!
that under tow looks crazy today.
Creation is Amazing such power
Nowww ...if you could build a ...a capsule to reside in, under lake Superior ...that would be cool 😎 ...come and go, as you like 👍 envy of your friends 🌊💧
Wow. Awsome power in lake superior
the sea was angry that day, my friends!
That's crazy, looks like ocean waves! Does anyone ever go out surfing, like ppl do in ocean storms when the waves are massive?
Look up greatlakesurfing!
I live in the little town in Minnesota that was hit by a tornado yesterday. Beautiful footage though.
Crazy times we live in!
