I’m pinning this comment right to the top of the comment section! Naming your dog after a ship, now that’s a person that truly loves the ships! So cool! 👍⛴️
My Dad worked on frieghters on the Great Lakes from 1937 until the attack on Pearl Harbor. Then, of course, he joined the Navy. He was born in 1920. He once told me if he slept at the right time he wouldn't see land for four days on the lakes. I grew up in Michigan but now reside on the Gulf Coast, I'm still around big water. One thing that I've noticed about people from other parts of the Country is they have NO IDEA just how massive the Great Lakes are. My Wife's first reaction was priceless. She kept calling Lake Michigan an ocean. I could see the "HOLY CRAP" look on her face. I beam with pride when someone visits Michigan for the first time and comes back to tell me about their trip.
Your comment is an absolutely wonderful story to read. So many people are going enjoy it. Your father has all of my respect for putting on the uniform and serving in the navy. Many people have no idea how big these Great Lakes ships are or the Great Lakes. Lakes superiors like being on an ocean. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
It takes a lot of guts to be out on the water and bad conditions. I would be pretty nervous. I have a hard enough time parking a vehicle at the mall let alone driving 1000 foot ship. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
It's what we choose to do in life. I'm a driller on a offshore drilling rig. Plus 20 years on land rigs. The training is top notch. If you like doing what you do life is awesome.
@derrickconnolly9164 that is extremely cool. You must have a lot of cool stories. You’re definitely a hard worker, that’s for sure. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Oh please! It’s not 1660 with The Mayflower heading off in a storm. The Captain is cosseted in a modern deck with all the technologies to hand. If he took ill the will be one, two or three officers that can step in and take over.
This guy is the type of person that gives me hope when I feel inundated by the hate, lies, greed, ego and degradation that seems to have covered these social media sites like a oily sheen, or suffocating sludge. Thanks for bringing this to us. It makes me think of the iconic line, "So shines a good deed in a weary world."
Wow, what an unbelievably humbling and beautiful comment. I really appreciate you so much for taking time to watch the video and to leave such a wonderful comment. It’s so nice of you. I hope you will watch this video, you will see the wonderful Boat friends snowman and Snow coming down with the ship other day tell me what you think. ua-cam.com/video/kDrz3D0TqbM/v-deo.htmlsi=XwiI7oUDm6NRcH2B
I spent 3 years living on the shore of Lake Superior overlooking the lower harbor in Marquette. Was able to sit in the dining room or on the porch , drinking coffee and watching the freighters passing by. Especially enjoyed when they harbored overnight. I had a shirt tail relative who was captain of the Mesabe Miner for many years and have always enjoyed watching these awesome ships as they pass through the Gear Lakes. Thank you for posting!
I can tell you really have passion about these ships as well. I think that’s so cool that you have a connection to the Miner as well. I hope you come back again. It was great reading your comment. Did you seethe Alpena video? ua-cam.com/video/8fkZZoR1IkE/v-deo.htmlsi=6u9xAngujvQVkB1j
Hands-down the best documentaries I’ve ever watched about Duluth are these two, Lost Duluth 1 & Lost Duluth 2. If you want to learn about the ship canal start at exactly 19:33 in Lost Duluth 1. I have linked these videos below for you. These documentaries tell the whole story of Duluth’s beginning and shipping industry, it’s absolutely fascinating with the photos and videos. Lost Duluth 1: www.tpt.org/lost-duluth-i/video/lost-duluth-i-38108/ (www.tpt.org/lost-duluth-i/video/lost-duluth-i-38108/) Lost Duluth 2: ua-cam.com/video/8LtrsYVWezY/v-deo.html (ua-cam.com/video/8LtrsYVWezY/v-deo.html)
There is nothing more majestic than a Great Lakes ship. I worked on the Lakers for 9 years and i have a lifetime of memories. Duluth was one of if my favourite ports.
You are definitely person. I’d love to sit down and talk with. The stories you must have. I have a lot of respect for people like you that make a living on the water. It’s no easy task, but it’s really something we all envy in a way. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. While I agree that those pilot house forward 1000 footers are quite distinctive, living in Baltimore we get to see some really enormous ships including ones loaded with THOUSANDS of tractor trailer sized containers STACKED very high on the deck. Alas, those ships are too big to enter the Great Lakes via the Welland Canal. But I think we all agree, beautiful ships are a joy to behold. Sam, 83* Towson, MD
Shari, I’m absolutely thrilled that you enjoyed this video. Thank you for taking time on a Tuesday to watch the video and also leave a comment. You’re awesome. @vibewithmike I will subscribe..I grew up on lake Ontario as a kid and spent alot of time around most of the lakes..I'm far away now but they are still in my blood.I love going back and watching the ships and visiting the old lighthouses every chance I get..
@TheMarky26 I still haven’t been to Lake Ontario. I have to check it out. I think at this point I definitely need to see all five Great Lakes just to check it off my bucket list. However, there’s only so many hours in a day. Someday I’ll get there, brother. But you know what I mean, seeing these big lakes, there’s something about them. They just draw you in.
As a young 5-10 year old mid 70’s my Dad who was raised in the tip of the thumb. Use to take me to watch these beauties float by. Thank you. A nostalgic journey
I’ve watched these beauties in Duluth, Saute St Marie, port Huron/Sanilac, St Ignace and the Mackinaw Straits. I often romanticize of that life on the Great Lakes I’m the 19th and 20th centuries. Fascinating, simpler/slower times…
Canal Park in Duluth is my happy place. Love sitting on the upper patio at "Grandmas", drinking a beer and watching the ships coming in or going out. By the way...Deep fried Smelt is delicious!
I love this comment because you and I share the same happy place. Years ago before I lived in Duluth when I would travel to Duluth, I would always find a reason to be by the bridge. Always! There’s nothing more magical than being next to the water and that beautiful gray bridge. I really appreciate you, leaving this comment. I really hope that you subscribe and come back my friend. Take a look at this new story about us Boat friends on the news. ua-cam.com/video/X1fWdiuszqE/v-deo.htmlsi=9WFZIz5WqqImk_Qi
I went to school in Cleveland around 1980, the cafeteria would have fried smelt for dinner. I don't know how those women did it, but the deep fried smelt was wonderful, one of my favorite dinners.
GOD I remember pa and uncles when they would come back from Deluth smelt fishing with the backs of 3 pickups FULL of every container that could hold them . We'd all get up grab scissors and the next three days were fish fries and processing them for winter stores . YUM! Point beer batter smelt !
This is just such a fab channel. New here. Dad was a merchant sailor and would have loved this. Thank you for great shots and for no music! From Hobart, Tasmania.
I am so glad that you enjoy this. I have a lot of respect for your dad, any sailor out on the water. Huge respect. If there’s one video I want you to see. It’s the one I just posted a few days ago. Wait until you see this. ua-cam.com/video/F1-WkSXr6p8/v-deo.htmlsi=eubeqPq_L_GhasGz
They never get old. You are so right. Here’s some more information about those salutes if people want to know. There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.
@TheBandit7613 very good point my friend. 1000 foot Great Lakes ships were constructed to fit into the lock (i.e. Soo Locks) without room to spare. It is all’s about maximizing the cargo capacity. Look at the photo linked below. You can see how those big ships are molded to the Soo Lock chamber. npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/df3bfe2/2147483647/strip/true/crop/6144x4088+0+0/resize/880x586!/quality/90/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Flegacy%2Fsites%2Fwiaa%2Ffiles%2F202103%2Fsoo_locks_-_usace_0.jpg
Safe travels. I have a LOT of respect for the officers and crew that guide these ships to and from their ports, day and night, in every kind of weather. ⚓️
I totally agree with you, I respect anybody that’s on the water. It’s really cool to watch these ships. I want you to take a look at the ship arriving with Snow the other day. Tell me what you think. ua-cam.com/video/kDrz3D0TqbM/v-deo.htmlsi=VRdKZ7XYycumD3uL
@irenedavo3768 Irene, happy Tuesday to you over there in the UK. Trust me, I would love to check out the port of Liverpool. I actually watched a UA-cam video on it not too long ago. I hope you’re doing great. Thank you so much for watching the ship video today.🇬🇧
Jim, thank you so much for supporting the channel and being a Boat friend. I hope you had a fabulous Monday. What a very nice thing to do. Again, super appreciate you. It really means a lot. We are going to have a lot of fun this summer. Going to have the boat out on the lake and we are going to see ships from new perspectives live. It will be a whole new ship watching experience. I have to watch for the waves in the wind, that’s the only issue. On calm days I definitely will be out there for your brother. All the best to you and your family.
The ships are so large. One thing that’s very incredible is how quiet there as they go by. You would think they would be much louder, but that’s not the case. Have a wonderful weekend. Thanks for leaving a nice comment on a Friday. I hope you subscribe and come back.
These ships really have changed over the years. Did you see this big ship leaving with the snow coming down? This was the other day. ua-cam.com/video/kDrz3D0TqbM/v-deo.htmlsi=GTGWNAjdkGWnao_t
I’m really glad you were enjoying it. I try to do some good research so everybody has a better idea of what they are seeing. Again, I’m no expert, I’m just a regular guy that hits the record button on a camera, but I try to do some research. I just try to have fun out there as you know. It’s really fun when there’s wild weather with those ships, that’s my favorite. I hope you have a fantastic rest of the day, my friend.
That camera span really shows the immense length of this ship. I thought the stern would have showed up sooner but the pan just kept going and going. Very impressive!
We always wish the captain and the crew a safe journey. Even though I’m on shore watching those wild waves, I have a feeling some of them hard-working crew members were actually sleeping on board because those waves didn’t even bother them.
As a young family in the 80's, we went to Duluth every summer. I never tire of that entire North Shore. Saw many ships come & go- magnificent machines. Looking forward to more of your videos nice job❤🎉
Friend, that’s exactly how my love for the North Shore as well. I grew up in Minneapolis and family trips are what exposed me to these ships and the beautiful lakes superior. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
I lived my entire life in Toledo, until I moved to FL eight years ago. Of the relatively few things I miss, these boats are very close to the top of the list. Thanks for soothing my homesickness.👍❤🚢
I can only imagine. If I moved away from the ships, I would tremendously miss them a lot. It really makes me happy knowing that this gives you a little bit of connection back to those ships. I will keep doing it for you, friend.
Jeff, my goodness! I so appreciate you supporting the channel brother. It means a lot. I hope you’re having a fantastic Tuesday. It’s people like you that give me the passion energy to push and get those ships out on video. It means a lot that you took time to watch a video, leave a comment, contribute, you are the best. I hope you subscribe and come back brother, many more ship videos coming
I see the Duluth canal, I click "Like." I love the foghorns. Man I wish we could get up there more often. Have seen this ship go in and out of Duluth quite a few times over the years.
That’s an absolutely beautiful place. I’m glad you’re able to actually make it to Duluth once in a while. There’s a lot of people that never get to see the place or will experience it. We are the lucky few that actually have set foot there to see the ships.
@@vibewithmike My family has been going there since Canal Park was a mostly-unused gravel lot. My great-grandparents were from Minneapolis and used to spend weekends on the shore whenever they could. My grandparents got to where they could look at a ship far out in the lake and tell if it was headed to Silver Bay, Two Harbors, or Duluth. Then they'd "race it in," no matter what time of the day or night. My first visit was as a young child in 1992, and I've probably been back 15-20 times since then (now bringing my own kids with -- the fifth generation in my family to call it "our place.") I kind of miss the shore the way it used to be, with the fishing shanties and all the Mom 'n' Pop cabin rentals. But it's great to see more people getting there to enjoy it too. It's more fun to watch my kids enjoy the big ships coming in than to watch them myself!
@midwestmatthew9752 this is a great story, your story is very similar to mine. When I was very young, I too, was brought to Duluth, and I was hooked ever since. I think it was the big lake, the ships, maybe just being away from the big city of Minneapolis. my heart has been there ever since, duluth.
I want to be there right now! I’m only a 21/2 hour drive away!! This is my most favorite part of Duluth, ships going in and coming out of the canal! Thank you so much for sharing this! “I love it!”
I’m thrilled that you enjoy these videos. I promise you all summer long. I will bring you some great coverage of the ships. The treat that I will be providing next weekend, if the weather is right, I’m going to do a live stream video from my Boat of the ships going by from the water.
@@vibewithmikeHi Mike! Great to see this new video. I am a little late as things have been a little busy lately! You were out in the rain! That's awesome! It is surprising to see people fishing off the south pier! I didn't know it was allowed! My youngest might enjoy that! Anyway, I have to see this spicy water. Haha. Who said that? 😄
@LoriLeaPouttu that will go down as one of the funniest and coolest comments, spicy water! It makes sense, just like how people say a little bit of hot sauce on that just means there’s some extra kick to what’s going on. Yes, it’s incredible to see people fishing along pier and it was amazing to find that net that washed up on shore. I hope your Monday is off to a good start, my friend. It always brings us smile to my face to see a comment from you. All the best to you, Lori!
@@vibewithmike Yes an extra kick! 😄 I still have to watch the whole video, but that means I have something to look forward to later too. Yay! It has been a great Monday so far! Go with the flow and be happy! 🙂👋🌊 It always make me happy to see you too. :)
Great video, Mike. I love how artsy your channel got with angles and corners you catch with your camera. Beautiful ship. Thank your for getting out with this weather and provide us another great video! That was really a beast that deserved to be seen. Thanks! ⛰️🇮🇹⛴️🇺🇸🌊
The ships are really fun, but I absolutely love finding the unique things to look at while we are looking at them, while not noticing them. If that all makes sense? 😂😂 An example, not many people look down and notice the reflection inside of a puddle, but I love seeing the reflection of something cool providing a new perspective. Looking at the bridge in the reflection of a puddle is something that not everybody thinks about doing, but it’s cool when you see it. Another thing is looking at the shadow from the bridge on a ship. How many people think about that shadow? However, I think it’s cool to see the bridge outline from the shadow on a ship passing under. You also see other things I like capturing birds, sand, etc. I just have a lot of fun trying to make it interesting and covering some of the art things I like as well in a ship video. I hope you are doing well. I know it’s late there in Italy, I appreciate you taking time out of your evening to drop a comment and mentioned the artistic part of the videos. Super appreciate that and thank you so much, my friend. I hope you make it here to Duluth somday. We watch a ship together.🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
@@vibewithmike Thanks, Mike. You're so right about ships being fun. We are lucky though to enjoy such a great channel. It takes also a good and sensitive eye to appreciate the small and less small details and the more you move forward, the more good it gets. I am looking really forward to see the new videos and see what will unfold. I would totally love to visit Duluth one day and I am somewhat planning it and I would definitely join you on the feet of the lifting bridge or at the pier watching the ships and tugs coming and going and sailing around the port! Next month I am going to enjoy some ship spotting around Venice, at Porto Marghera. I will definitely shot a couple of videos. Have a great day! Till the next time! :Dp together. 🇮🇹 🇺🇸🛳🌊⛰
@pechblendae please send me some videos of you. Catch some good ships out in that area. The Boat friends would love to see it. Pictures, videos, whatever. Just tell me what the location was and if you’re able to figure out what ship it is. That would be so awesome. Safe travels, my friend.
Man what a huge ship. You are fortunate to live near the lakes and get to experience the historic structures and vessels when you like. Thanks for reminding us what it takes to keep our world running! Subscribed!
It’s a pleasure meeting you, my friend, thank you for subscribing. Hey, check this out! This explains the Aerial Lift Bridge operations center. The small house in the middle of the bridge. Great video. I grew up in Port Colborne, Ontario in the 70's and 80's and some of my strongest childhood memories are of watching those massive lakers sail through on the Welland Canal (Lake Erie & Lake Ontario transit). When some of the ocean going vessels would pass through the sailors would throw down coins from their home countries to us kids standing along the canal wall. Good times.
An absolute pleasure to meet you, my friend. Thank you for taking time on a Wednesday to watch this shit video. Now that is one place I have to get, the Welland Canal, I have to see those ships going through there. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Fun video!! Growing up in Michigan we used to watch the ships all day from our home on lake Michigan. Sometimes we would drive to the Soo and watch them go through the Locks. They always seem so big. Now i live in Tacoma, WA. We get the Ocean freighters in and out of the South Sound, as well as a regular stream of container ships going in and out of the Bay. I see ships like this every day now... and it always kinda reminds me of growing up in the great lakes. I've told my partner how Tacoma kind of reminds me Duluth. The ship traffic. The lift bridge. The downtown area built along the harbor/bay. Lucky for us, though, it never gets very cold out here in Tacoma
It’s an absolute pleasure meeting you! Thank you so much for taking time out of your Thursday to watch this ship video. I have not been to Tacoma, but I have a few friends that live there and they talk a lot about it. I think you’re comparison is very fair. Also, when you lived in Michigan, I guarantee you that you know about bad weather. Just like us here in Minnesota. I really hope that you and your partner can visit Duluth sometime. I totally respect you! All of you that work in the Maritime industry, you were all known as hard workers. It must’ve been so cool walking on those ships. That’s what all of us dream of. And here you were actually fixing/maintaining the ship. When you stand on deck on a ship like that is it even more impressive being on it looking out or is it more impressive looking at it from a distance? I've learned so much about ships through watching your channel. Always a delight to see them and to get a better visual on exactly how big these ships actually are. So thank you for creating this channel. You gotta love, what your doing here and, it shows. 👍😁
What a beautiful and delightful comment from you! Such a nice thing to say. I can tell you, I have a lot of fun recording these ships. I am no expert. I’m just a guy that likes to record ships and sometimes I talk too much.😂 however, there’s nothing that makes me happier than knowing that these videos are making people happy. It also means a lot that you took time out of your day to watch the video in the first place and leave a comment like this. So thank you for that. God bless and have a fantastic weekend ahead.

That’s exactly what I think when I see them going by. I always use a comparison, the Eiffel Tower is 1080 feet tall and these ships are 1000 feet long, it’s like having an Eiffel Tower floating by you.
It was an absolute pleasure being out there Betty. Yes, it was a little cold on my hands from the cold rain, but it’s all good. To be able to capture this ship and allow people like you and my other friends to see this type of ship. It really puts a smile on my face and it makes me happy.
i believe the Gott got a fresh paint job at Fincantieri in Sturgeon Bay this past winter, why it looks so vibrant, nice vid Mike keep them coming, your videos inspired me to take a trip up to Duluth with the wife on the can-am spyder and do some boat watching last summer.
Now that sounds fantastic! The Can-Am spyder would do really well going along the scenic from Duluth to two harbors. That would be the best possible situation. Being on that machine and looking out at the beautiful scenery as you go. Nothing could get better.
@@vibewithmike yeah i was informed of that from a friend i should have went to Two Harbors cause it is a nice scenic drive, and also to take a trip up to copper harbor from a harley rider we met at a gas station near Lakewood.sounds like another road trip.
Great video and commentary. Loved the color description as 2 toned then you list 4 colors! LMAO! Thought I was the only one who can't count under pressure! Loved the rainy day and the occasional splash to the camera guy. That ship was runnin' and gunnin' on the way out. IMPRESSIVE AMERICAN MADE POWER! Roll on baby.
Well, at least I was able to add some comedy into it. 😂 Thanks for the comment. Yes, these ships are extremely powerful. It’s interesting as when there’s really nothing going on in the canal, these huge Giants can go right by you and you would not even notice they are there if you were listening. The last time I saw the Edwin Gott, I was traveling just east of the manitou islands in thick fog and out of nowhere pops the 1000’ freighter, put a giant smile on my face.

@@vibewithmike Ive grown up boating the length of Lake Michigan and don’t often travel up by the Manitous, but there and north is my favorite part of Lake Michigan. Much like superior, it’s “nice” in the summer and dangerous in the winter, shores lined with dense forests and dunes. Glad I found your channel, you’ve put together some great videos.
I love Lake Superior. Was there a couple of years ago. 3 hours after just arriving in Duluth we walked to the canal and seen the Great Republic leaving. What an amazing sight. Can't wait to go back to Duluth. Beautiful city.
I am so happy you were able to see the great Republic of all ships. It is such a unique design. It has a wedding cake, super structured design where there’s multiple levels. I’m happy that you were able to see a ship. I’ve heard stories where people have traveled to Duluth and never did get to see a ship. You did get to see a good one. Thank you so much, my friend. Another Excellent Video!! Love your recording to keep interest going until the Ship is right in front of us!! That is a Long Ship!! The fastest on the Great Lakes!! Those waves do not affect that Ship!! Love the Salute of the Ship to the Bridge, and then the return from the Bridge? I get goose bumps!!! Truly Enjoyed the Video Mike, Thank You!! 🤗❤️👍🙋🏻♀️
That’s what it’s all about Kim, a little bit anticipation before that big ship comes, it can get kind of boring if it’s just a ship coming and every time. Again, thank you so much for your comment and being part of this channel.
Got my blood running. Brings back feelings I had conning a 50,000 ton aircraft carrier in and out of port. The Captain usually had one of the qualified Officers of the Deck take the ship in and out. Almost as much fun as landing on it.
Bob, let me first start on by saying thank you so much for your service to our country. Anybody that has put a uniform on has my respect, and so many other people feel the same way too. I’m sure you saw some huge waves on the ocean. These great lakes ships the only great lakes. They are so beautiful and powerful as they go. Again, thank you so much for subscribe and come back to. The most common bow of our old lakers is the axe bow, made for cutting through waves and higher speeds. The bulbous bow is used where the ship maintains a cruisibg speed for long distances and decreases fuel consumption. TheGott hasneuther an axe or bulbous bow seems to have the plumb bow. Maritime terms are so interesting as well as their explanations. Just another bit of trivia..Park Point beach was voted one of the top 3 beaches in the USA, very impressive since its size is not. Duluth has much to offer the resident or tourist. The weather especially ever changing and strikingly beautiful no matter stormy or clear.
Boat friends, here’s our friend Carole giving us some great information like usual! “Axe Bow” now that is a term I haven’t heard before. I’m learning new things. Here’s an article referencing with Carole is talking about regarding Park point Beach. www.wdio.com/front-page/top-stories/park-point-named-one-of-the-best-beaches-in-nation/
Good video, I’ve watched this boat come into our dock numerous times to off load. Plus according to the date of this video, that was its destination on this trip. The crew on the Gott is so nice and very good at their jobs. I did verify it they are off loading at our dock as I type this.
Hey friend, thank you so much for your time watching the video today Scott. Thanks a lot man. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Liz, it’s actually really fun watching them go through the ship canal with the waves and some weather. Now I don’t want the weather to be too severe for the ships so they’re in danger but a big ship like this made easy work of these waves and wild weather in this video. I know what you mean, the ships never get old to me either.👍⛴️⛴️👋
Thank you, Mike, for your wonderful videos. I grew up in Duluth in the 60's and claim Duluth as home. I'm so glad to visit again each time through your videos. Looking forward to many more. Thank you!
Amy, what a delightful and uplifting comment. You’re such a good person to write this. Thank you for taking time out of your Thursday. Were you one of the people that were able to actually ride up on the lift bridge before they banned it?
@@vibewithmike No, I never did that. But I do remember driving with my parents over to Superior and back on the old draw bridge and waiting while it lifted for boats to go through.
This was a really fun video to record. Water splashing up over the wall. Also, you will see a net with smelt fish in it. Many people have asked about the fishing going on on the south pier. Now you will be able to see that smelt fish. Nice wave action and a very rainy and windy day in Duluth. And how can we forget about that huge ship going out into the storm
Mike - I can’t view your live streams while you are live. You don’t show up in my recommended videos. I know that you just live-streamed the Block coming in at 9:45 pm tonight (Sunday). I have 5 UA-cam channels and I can’t find you on any of them. What could cause this?
Very cool. Very well shot and humorously and enthusiastically narrated. Fabulous high res video that really captured the grandeur of the Edwin H Gott against the backdrop of those wonderful broody misty skies and all those wonderful older structures - And I love the little arty out-takes youve incorporated into your edit too Mike.. The reflection of the tower in the puddle gently broken by the rain drops was first class and helped elevate this whole production, as did the name sketched in the sand etc. Keep up the great work!
I really appreciate your wonderfully positive comment. I hope you’re having a fantastic Saturday. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Lake Superior- The only one of the Great Lakes that at it's warmest is cold AF lol... Duluth is such a cool town; it's grown a LOT over the past 30 years

Yes, the news spread pretty fast the next day. I thought about it a lot, I know it’s a terrible situation, but a lot of good did come out of it. Those lives lost will never be forgotten. The industry completely changed to a safety first mentality after this happened. I think there’s a lot of lives that were Saved because of this. We will never forget to Fitzgerald and her crew.

I have so many framed photos of transport ships from when I was on the USCG Mackinaw in the early 70's. They are a sight to see in person. Great site and keep up the good work.
Let me first say, thank you so much for your service! That’s a famous vessel that you were on! I bet bet you you have so many stories. So incredible! This is a very important day in history, prayers go out to the family of sailors lost on the Fitzgerald. I know it’s hard to think about but a lot of good came out of that sad tragedy. Thank you, Mike, for all the great videos you do for us boat friends, especially on a warm sunny, calm day there in Duluth. Just kidding. Stay safe my friend and watch out for those washing machine splashes. Peace!!
Scott, thanks again for your support support and watching the ships my friend. We are going to have a heckuva time possibly next weekend if the weather is OK I’m gonna go out there and do a live stream on my boat. I’m looking at these ships. I’ve also been doing some testing in the harbor to see where my signal is the strongest. It’s going to get really fun and interesting for us very soon with the ability to be on the boat going live.
I’m in awe! I’ve always been fascinated by huge ships, bridges or any massive structure. The building and engineering of massive structures that men have accomplished is truly remarkable. I’ve never been to Minnesota or have seen the Great Lakes but I did fly over once when I was a kid. I was going from CA to Indiana to visit family and I had a connecting flight out of Chicago. As a kid I saw the Great Lakes on a map and didn’t realize just how huge they are until I flew over them! I’ve seen these huge ships off the coast of CA where I live but never this close up. Love your videos.
I really enjoyed reading your comment. It truly is fascinating watching these ships on the Great Lakes. Yes, they do look different but that’s what makes it so cool. I love ocean going ships as well. When I’m out in California I’m always drawn to the water to see those ships. Thank you so much for watching this channel in these ships. I promise we will keep having fun on the water.
@@vibewithmike Do these ships ever go out to sea? After watching this video I got curious to see where the rivers run from the Great Lakes so I looked on Google earth and tried to see where and how far the rivers go. Are any of the rivers deep enough that a ship like this could go out to sea? I bet seeing these ships in person is much grander than what I’m seeing in your videos. Pictures never do justice even so, they look massive on video.
@tigerlyn9627 these Great Lakes ships never make it out to see. However, many ocean going ships come from the Atlantic ocean all the way to Duluth. Take a look at this map I linked below. Start at Duluth and end at Nova Scotia. Follow that line. That’s the path the ships take to get to the Atlantic Ocean or from the Atlantic to Duluth. cdn.forumcomm.com/dims4/default/dfcaca7/2147483647/strip/true/crop/964x2738+0+0/resize/840x2386!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforum-communications-production-web.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2F16%2Fd4%2F91400aa64d1e85f29b9e1a0141cd%2Fcruise.jpg (cdn.forumcomm.com/dims4/default/dfcaca7/2147483647/strip/true/crop/964x2738+0+0/resize/840x2386!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforum-communications-production-web.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2F16%2Fd4%2F91400aa64d1e85f29b9e1a0141cd%2Fcruise.jpg)
Oh my, smelt! When my family first moved to MN in 1972, we lived in the cities. My dad’s friends told him about the smelt run, so he& my brothers went up north & got “over excited” 😂. Let’s just say, we had an over abundance of smelt & not my favorite
I have watched people fishing for many times. It was actually very cool that I was able to see that net washup unsure to show people it smelt look like. I did take the net and put it up in the grass on short so it didn’t get back in the lake. I haven’t tried smelt yet. Just watched the Edwin H Gott go out. Wow the waves on the bow were huge. We went thru the Tornado outbreak in Iowa on Friday . They estimate over 100 tornados sighted. We were ok the nearest one to us was around 40 miles away. One scary evening. Don't want to go thru that again. Thanks Mike, stay dry.
Ron, I was wondering what the number of tornadoes were over the last few days. I saw a map that was unbelievable with the amount of dots that they had on the screen showing tornadoes that went through the United States. I’m glad that you’re safe. What a scary situation though.
I was on the USS Lincoln and figured it would be way bigger, so I looked it up and they’re about the same length. Never realized how massive these Great Lakes ships are. I’ve been to Duluth a thousand times but never took the time to really watch the ships, but I’ll definitely put that on my list next time I make it up there. Cool view.

Ken, thank you so much for being part of the video premier for this ship. I really do like getting out there recording the ships on weather type of days. It is nice to see the blue sky and sun, but there’s something about these beast ships that go out or come in during the bad weather. It just shows how tough they are. I just have to make sure to keep my camera equipment dry as I can, but I really like getting out there and showing what’s going on with the weather as well.
@@vibewithmikeWow! That was fun to see the power of the ship move through the stormy water. So how did you keep your equipment dry while filming?
The bridge to ship salutes never gets old!
@@vibewithmike These ships look like big shoeboxes pushing water instead of cutting thru the waves. Why such an inefficient looking shape?
@TheBandit7613 very good point my friend. 1000 foot Great Lakes ships were constructed to fit into the lock (i.e. Soo Locks) without room to spare. It is all’s about maximizing the cargo capacity. Look at the photo linked below. You can see how those big ships are molded to the Soo Lock chamber.

👍👍👍👍👍👍 The Great Lakes are to be Highly respected for their power !!
That beast ship pushed right through those waves
Hello from Liverpool in England!
Oh, Mike ... after a rainy day like that, you need a hot cup o' joe! Always fun to watch your posts ... thanks for sharing!
Thanks for giving me an in-person look at the Duluth harbor! Wow, that ship is unbelievable, it is a beast!
Hey friend, no worries. Thanks for watching. I can guarantee you. You will really enjoy this video.

"Watching the ships roll in
And I watch 'em roll away again, yeah
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away"
Here’s a beautiful song right here! m.ua-cam.com/video/Zu5chXCp1Ag/v-deo.html
ok, OK Otis. Let me guess. You left your home in Georgia ...right?
@shaunelijah2232 sitting by the dock of the bay, maybe we should change it to sitting by the dock of superior Bay?
Otis my man
@steveolson69 and here’s that awesome song. ua-cam.com/video/Zu5chXCp1Ag/v-deo.htmlsi=AFIgB2JmFJLrr3nh
What s magnificent sight to behold. Thanks
The ships are so large. One thing that’s very incredible is how quiet there as they go by. You would think they would be much louder, but that’s not the case. Have a wonderful weekend. Thanks for leaving a nice comment on a Friday. I hope you subscribe and come back.
Wow! Ships sure have changed a lot during my lifetime!
These ships really have changed over the years. Did you see this big ship leaving with the snow coming down? This was the other day. ua-cam.com/video/kDrz3D0TqbM/v-deo.htmlsi=GTGWNAjdkGWnao_t
Not only are the videos great Mike, I love all the information about the ships you provide. Thank you.
That’s exactly right, it’s even hard for an owl to turn its head to see these ships!🦉⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️😂
That's a spicy water! What a beast. Thanks for braving the weather.
That’s exactly right! Spicy water!😂😂😂😂👍👍⛴️⛴️ I absolutely love that terminology. That’s great.
Wow! That is “angry” water! Prayers for the Captain and crew for a safe journey and into Safe Harbor. 🙏
@vibewithmike also let me know if there is going to be a "tall ship" event this year TY
@shabbymaverick7975 I still have to figure out if that’s happening this year. If it is, I’ll be there for you.
This Is what Makes Our Country GREAT!
GOD BLESS And safe Travels
To The Crews of these Vessels.....
It’s definitely a powerful ship, a beautiful ship. Did you see this new story? ua-cam.com/video/X1fWdiuszqE/v-deo.htmlsi=FDXn36CEkfZjKzoc
Thanks!
@LoriLeaPouttu exactly, positive vibes all day!
Safe trip to the Gott crew! Beautiful vessel.
It’s a beautiful ship and I know we both love it
Great video, Mike.

And here you were actually fixing/maintaining the ship. wow it is like watching a skyscraper float bye ty so much for sharing Moke have a great rainy day!
That’s exactly what I think when I see them going by. I always use a comparison, the Eiffel Tower is 1080 feet tall and these ships are 1000 feet long, it’s like having an Eiffel Tower floating by you.
From Sturgeon Bay! Awesome

Thank so much for going out in the rain et all. Really great video. The wind and waves are so like the ocean. A gottcha "Gott" shower.😂😅
And the Speer got her fresh paint 2 years ago as I recall. Also done in Sturgeon Bay, WI.

So is the axe bow ship less likely to capsize than the typical trans-oceanic ship yet less economical if it had to cross the Pacific❓
@brentflora8965 excellent question, I got to look into this
Good video, I’ve watched this boat come into our dock numerous times to off load. Plus according to the date of this video, that was its destination on this trip. The crew on the Gott is so nice and very good at their jobs. I did verify it they are off loading at our dock as I type this.

Waking up today back in 75 was a tragedy 😢. As always a nice film.
I’ve never seen anything like that before. That is amazing something that long can float.
Hey friend, thank you so much for taking time over here Sunday to watch this ship. There are so many ships that come through Duluth and I enjoy filming one of them and showing the uniqueness of the area. I really like interesting weather conditions too. It makes some fun. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
And it's loaded full with iron ore. How the heck it floats is amazing.
@InsideLookingOut99 it’s absolutely amazing to me as well. All of that weight. Yes it’s sealed up but my goodness, that is really heavy. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
This was a GREAT video. Really captured the weather, the tumultuous water, and the greatness of this vessel. Thx !
I really, really appreciate you taking time on a Sunday to watch this video James. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
This is really cool ,I just live in the cities, My Brother is in Alborn, his kids are Herman town, area , the power of superior is underrated .
It’s a pleasure meeting you my friend. How often do you get up to Duluth? I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Thanks for sharing! I thought I would only watch a minute but the fun facts and filmography kept me there the whole time. Very cool video
Anna! What a very nice comment from you. You are such a good person. Do you want to know how I know this? You took time out of your day to watch an entire video and then instead of just moving onto the next, you stopped and wrote this comment. Your comment really put a smile on my face. I think it’s really cool of you. And I want to thank you for that. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Two Harbors is a half hour drive up the North Shore from Duluth. The big lakers pull in there to load up too.
"The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down, bout the big lake they call gitchagumee...."
That song will never get old, it’s the anthem of Lake superior
I have so many framed photos of transport ships from when I was on the USCG Mackinaw in the early 70's. They are a sight to see in person. Great site and keep up the good work.
Let me first say, thank you so much for your service! That’s a famous vessel that you were on! I bet bet you you have so many stories. So incredible! This is a very important day in history, prayers go out to the family of sailors lost on the Fitzgerald. I know it’s hard to think about but a lot of good came out of that sad tragedy. The industry changed to a safety first mentality. Many lives or saved due to this, I’m guessing. Again, thank you so much for your service. Take a look at this video of Boat friends on the news. ua-cam.com/video/X1fWdiuszqE/v-deo.htmlsi=9WFZIz5WqqImk_Qi
Beautiful ship indeed!
Nicholas, thank you for taking time on a Wednesday to watch the video and even writing a comment. I really appreciate you man. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
What a scenic day. I remember the firs time I saw the Gott go by. It was like an enormous train, just going and going. It's really amazing when the channel is close to shore.
It’s one of the most amazing spots to watch a ship. You are right, the channel is close to shore. You almost feel like you can touch the ship as it goes by. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️

I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Very much amusing, the water and weather really shows our earth breathing. That is some Dude of a Ship.
Klassy, I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Thanks, that brings back memories. Seeing that ship up close and its draft marks remind me of being a kid. My father used to take me and my brother sailing down around Terminal Island Long Beach and we would be amazed at the huge ships and tankers docked there.
I’m really glad that I brought you back my friend. I have a great time recording these ships. And they’re enormous. Those tanker ships that you’re talking about there in Long Beach, those are really huge! I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Mike, I always enjoy your narrative with each video. It's very informative to us flat landers. Thanks for your efforts.
Warren, thank you so much for taking some time to write this comment. You put a smile on my face with this man. I really appreciate you watching the videos. I’m just out there having a lot of fun with the ships.
Hello boat friends and Mike from SC 76 here!👍🇺🇸
I hope that’s what the temperature is next weekend in Duluth so I can live stream from the boat
Cool view.
What a wonderful comment. These ships are so enormous and size. I really felt like I was a ant right next to this ship. I thank you for taking time to watch the ship video on the weekend. And also for writing a comment. I hope you come back often and chat. All the best to you. Thank you for your service! It means a lot to me and many others. It’s people like you that served our country that allows me to make videos like this. Thank you!🙏🇺🇸
Greetings from here in Germany, buddy. Cheers 😊
Well, there’s Michael! How are you my friend? The waves are rumbling and Duluth right now. There’s pretty large waves on the lake and some pretty strong wind around 40+ miles per hour. I hope things are a lot calmer there in Germany. Thanks as always for leaving a comment and checking in brother.👍⛴️🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
@@vibewithmike You´re welcome, Mike 😊 Yesterday it was very windy here in the NW, too.
@michaelborgelt1600 ⛴️👍
I've seen that ship go through many times. It's a beautiful piece of art
Getting pumped !
Carl, there’s nothing like this thousand 4 foot ship. I love it. And the conditions made it fun as well. Wind, rain and churning waves in the canal.
I really enjoy you sharing with us! I am in Oklahoma and would never get an opportunity to see this. I enjoy your enthusiasm as well.
Keith, thank you so much for taking time out of your Friday to leave this comment. I hope all is well in Oklahoma. I’ve been keeping my eye on the weather down there and in Texas, there’s been some wild storms lately. I hope you stay safe. All the best to you and your family. Hello from South Carolina 👍🇺🇸
👍⛴️
Spectacular! I'm surprised how blunt the bow is on that beast.
Yeah, it does have a pretty flush bow. And happy Thursday to my friend. 1000 foot Great Lakes ships were constructed to fit into the lock (i.e. Soo Locks) without room to spare. It is all’s about maximizing the cargo capacity. Look at the photo linked below. You can see how those big ships are molded to the Soo Lock chamber.

it even looks like the Fitzgerald!
Who?
Best video of these operations I've seen yet, and in 4K! Well done.
What an absolutely awesome comment and compliment! I really appreciate you. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Thanks Mike! that was an awesome video! The beautiful Gott, crashing waves (looked like one of the waves almost got you!) raining weather and your narration... Can't ask for more than that! Thanks for braving the weather for us! ⚓🚢⚓
Did you have umbrella in one hand and camera in the other? It would have been fun to see that! There were some big splashes too! That was really a change of pace out there. Fantastic job as always! You had the entire pier to yourself!
@LoriLeaPouttu I use a cover to protect it
@@vibewithmikeKind of surprising no surfers out there! Look at the wave action on the beach!
@@vibewithmike You always undercover. 😄
Great video, makes such a refreshing change . Safe travels !
It really makes me happy that you are enjoying these videos. I have a lot of fun out there and it’s very relaxing to me to look at these ships. It’s truly my pleasure. I hope you subscribe and come back my friend. Take a look at this video from back in the winter. ua-cam.com/video/mKzamgCa6zw/v-deo.htmlsi=4YKy5jy87XYL8KkJ
Not sure what I clicked on here.
It said must watch.... so you must watch lol
@stewiejonza1363 👍⛴️
I bet you’re glad you did !!
@rnupnorthbrrrsm6123 I’m always excited for people that finally find ships for the first time. A person like our friend Craig , he just clicked on it and found the channel. It’s a good people like him that we are adding to the should’ve already good people a part of this channel
Trainspotting, with boats.
Nice vid. As a kid, we would vacation at my aunt & ancle's house on the shore of Lake Huron at the mouth of the St. Clair river, just north of the Blue Water Bridge. For a 9-year-old boy, those ships were the high point of every trip...and they were so much bigger back then. :) Thanks for the memories.
Thank you so much for taking time out of your Wednesday my friend. I love your story, this comment is great. My love started for the ships when my parents brought me to Duluth when I was a young boy as well. I’ll tell you this, the nine-year-old boy probably comes out and you just like it does for me when I see these ships. I absolutely love them. I was thinking the exact same thing when he mentioned the iron ore. The poor Edmund Fitzgerald.
That was a very bad storm that Fitzgerald encountered
Fantastic video! Really captures the essence of life in the area, and massiveness of these ships! Well done!
I really appreciate you taking time out of your day to leave a positive comment. I really hope that you subscribe and come back to the channel. Take a look at this wild weather from last year. I think you’ll enjoy it. ua-cam.com/video/qXRXlkxES5k/v-deo.htmlsi=fFkEnYzIRGdUu2pQ

Lived in Duluth for 17 years, graduated from Central High school, I loved watching the ships come and go! Worked at the Army Reserve center on park point, always would get bridged at the most inopportune times!
I know that army reserve center very well. I’m sure you got caught by that bridge many times. It’s a pleasure meeting you, brother. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
