    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ryan (George Clooney) tells Natalie (Anna Kendrick) about his goal of earning 10 million frequent flyer miles.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jason Reitman's adaptation of the novel Up in the Air tells the story of Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), who makes his living personally handing out pink slips -- he's the top hatchet man at a company that other companies hire when they are downsizing. And since business is booming, his job keeps him on the go constantly. He flies all across the country, staying in a series of nice hotels. And although this itinerant lifestyle prevents him from having any kind of stable, regular life, this doesn't bother him in the slightest -- he's thrilled to be a boy in a traveling bubble. During one particular layover, he strikes up a conversation with Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga), a fellow savvy traveler. They bond over the ins and outs of various airlines and hotels, and quickly fall into bed. By morning, they are figuring out when their schedules will allow them to meet up again, even though they both make it clear that there are no strings attached. When Ryan arrives back in the home office, he meets no-nonsense career-oriented twentysomething Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick), a fast-rising up-and-comer who wants to change the company's practices and save millions by having the staff fire people remotely via webcams. Furious at the thought of losing a lifestyle he's grown quite comfortable with, he convinces his boss (Jason Bateman) to let him take Natalie on a few trips so that she can learn what it's really like to fire someone. Melanie Lynskey, Danny McBride, and J.K. Simmons co-star in this Best Picture Academy Award nominee.

It is and it isn’t. He doesn’t need to spend a hours on some gaming trophy to just order the full $40 meal allotment. Unless his company has some sort of reward for spending less, he would be cheating himself out of rewards for no reason.
It’s basic incentive. This girl just doesn’t know how to game systems for her benefit. And if you’re not doing that, that system is gaming you.

He's banking on the idea that the airline he has all those miles with won't suddenly go belly up or change their policies and undo everything he's worked for over the years, the same way all the people he fires had put their trust into their big company to reward their years of loyalty and hard work. They all thought the company would take care of them and their work would amount to something tangible. Instead he's hoping for his name on the side of a plane that nobody will ever read or care about and will probably be erased in a year or two

Y'all are laughing at him, but none of you have experienced buying a long haul Premium Economy fare on British Airways and after everyone has boarded, the flight attendant walks up to you with a glass of champagne and says "I have great news Mr C, we had a last minute cancellation in Club World so we can accommodate you" and you walk up front. Gold Status.

I used to have some status a while ago and I enjoyed the perks, too.
But the ridiculous thing about our hero here is that he hoards bonus miles - a totally soft currency an airline might devalue at will any time.
So even when I was quite aware which flight, car rental or hotel stay would fetch me miles, I would never let them get old (they don't earn interest either, you know...) but used them.
And in fact, they tend to lose value over time. 20 years ago, Lufthansa miles were pretty good currency - last time I tried, however, I could not exchange them for flights where I wanted at times I wanted - and the fees I would have had to pay along with the miles weren't far from a cheap ticket price elsewhere.
So I decided to swap my last miles into a fat shopping voucher for groceries to save them from expiring and never looked back.

Many, many (many) years ago, I did some HORRENDOUS travelling in my job. After leaving the military on a high note backed by two university degrees and a stint in Special Forces, I quickly transitioned into an amazing role for a multinational arms dealer.
I was similar to George Clooney's character however, I wasn't quite at that number of miles....not quite.
Saying that though, I was at the highest tier level on all my travel service providers (airlines, hotels, hire cars etc). I would be regularly upgraded at a whim with no questions asked. I dressed in suits and took pride in my travelling style and appearance.
I knew most of the travel industry staff across many cities by first name and would regularly buy them Christmas and birthday gifts and souvenirs from foreign shores as thank-you presents for their service and support.
For personal travel, the staff would automatically upgrade me to the best suites at reduced rates, although I tried not to travel on my time off.
I remember the looks I would get from other travellers as I would skip queue's, have priority seating and get the nicest of hire cars. I was even at the point where several hotels took my photo and had it laminated at the front desk counter so that new staff would know my name and know which room I was to be checked into.
What people didn't see was the sheer slog it took on a monthly basis to maintain such a rarified status.
    As the saying goes,
"The grass is greener on the other side, but what is the water bill like?"
On the surface things looked great, mid to late 30s, awesome high paying career, bordering on Tony Stark levels of military equipment, jet-setting around the world and enjoying the finer things in life.....but my home life was suffering. My wife was in the first trimester with our second child and I was sometimes only home on the weekend....if I was in country that is.
Anyway, I had a silver bullet moment when one one particular day each of the staff from airline to hire car to hotel asked by name how my wife's pregnancy was going. I hadn't thought about my wife for well over a week due to my current project worth millions. These "strangers" knew more about my home life than I did.
I realised that everything I thought I was working for was in danger of being lost....and it was totally my fault.
I decided then and there that my family was more important. I quit my job at the end of the one month notice period and changed industries. I thought I would regret it.
Once our second child was born I took my family on holidays to where my wife always wanted to go and I burnt through 3/4 of my miles in a few weeks. The remainder I gifted to my brother, the travel admin staff at my old work and my 50yo neighbours who had been unofficially supporting my wife while I was away.
I started in a new role with zero travel. It was a bit of a paycut but I was home every night. My wife was happy and with a new baby, it was the antidote I needed for the gnawing hole inside me.
When this movie came out, it was a bit of nostalgia. It really hit me....
Just the other day I took my first flight for work in over five years...stuck down the back in cattle class in-between two grumpy travellers. I had the biggest smile on my face as the flight attendant ignored me and my companions bitched about how good it would be at the front of the plane.
    Safe travels everyone.....

Only thing wrong with this scene is that he says his goal is 10million miles. However most airlines will only give status for actual miles flown, not for buying lunch/dinner etc. You still get miles for buying food etc, but they don't count towards status miles (which is what he was aiming for in the movie).

Total miles are used by most airlines towards certain lifetime status, not miles in your account at a point in time. Depending upon the airline that "lifetime" status is provisional as you must continue to fly to maintain the status. In the movie Mr. Clooney was trying to achieve lifetime executive status on American yet American does not give out lifetime status above Platinum Status which I have but Platinum used to be their top status now it's the 3rd

I'm the same way with Latitudes points on Norwegian Cruise Line: the points are the goal. Next week I'm going on a five-day cruise which will yield triple points and put over the threshold for Sapphire status. That will get me a bigger discount on excursions on my 11-day cruise in August to Norway and Iceland which are very excursion-heavy. Not to mention Sapphire status qualifies you for big perks on board like pretty much being able to get a table at dinner whenever and whenever you want.

I get what you mean, but I think everyone is dealing with wanting the fulfill their destiny AND the possibilities of raising a family... it’s just what Vera Farmiga’s character talked about “at a certain age you tend to just want to find a good person”.

The novelty of a plane that can fly for roughly 20 years. around the world, being with your name on it. That doesn't seem like anything to care about.
But what is in a name? What if everyone just called you Blank from now on. Now that probably offends you, so in reality, a name does matter to you and you get to travel 10 million miles for the rest of your life.
The novelty matters in some way or another.

This guy gets to 9.999 million miles and then covid happens, flights are grounded, the milage company goes broke and he loses everything including his miles. Out of depression he fails to wash his hands and catches covid. He is put on a ventilator / remdesivir protocol, has kidney failure and then chokes on his own vomit as the ventilator pumps it into his lungs. The hospital says he died of covid and receives 500k in compensation fpr treating him. The hospital also sends his estate a massive bill, since the insurance company was owned by the milage company which is now bankrupt. He had taken out health insurance in the most effective way so as to accrue the most amount of miles. Bugger.
