ANNIE 1977 Tony Awards. ("You're Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile"/"Easy Street"/"Tomorrow" - Andrea McArdle, Reid Shelton, Dorothy Loudon and Company)
All I have to say is THANK GOD the Tony producers allowed Annie to have 10+ minutes to perform otherwise most of us born after 1977 wouldn't have known what a goldmine this cast was. My God talk about talent and skill and showmanship.
Dorothy Loudon was just the ENTIRE package. Amazing voice, could dance her ass off, and a hysterical comedic actress. I know she was too young for Vaudeville, but she really embodied what it was all about. The woman was an entertainment machine.

She was surrounded by, supported by, and also herself complimenting some pretty top-notch talent, on stage and behind the scenes. I would never want to diminish her talent, but I also would not want to prop her up at the expense of others either. Especially on a video highlighting a show where she was a major part of the success, but nonetheless a show that would not have succeeded without the talents of the others sharing the stage with her. However, I think it’s fair to say she was the best thing about her failed Facts Of Life type sitcom. It was a wasted opportunity that, with better writing and costars, could have turned her into a household name, and she certainly deserved to become one.
mommymelissa79 Loudon ' harmonies are AMAZING. The choreography is fabulous. If you notice, you can spot some moves Bette Midler used in "First Wives Club". I fell in love with this musical via the OBCA and this is the VERY FIRST TIME I've ever seen this cast perform, in character these wonderful numbers! I'm in love, all over again!
She's awesome. This was my first time seeing her. I grew up on the Carol Burnett version of Miss Hannigan, and every other Miss Hannigan I've seen pales in comparison to her performance except this one. She's equally hilarious. I feel like Carol probably got inspiration from her.
Saw the original cast on Christmas eve. It was through family that we got cast seats in the 3rd row. My dad was in the hospital and friends took me to forget my troubles. Amazing time and the best show I have seen before and since.

One of the things that’s interesting about Andrea McArdle’s voice is that she became famous for her powerful belt but if you listen to her on those first few lines of “Tomorrow” right here in this video, it’s really a beautiful singing voice, in those softer quieter moments. There’s this velvet golden smoothness with just a hint of sandpaper. And this was all live, no studio trickery or autotune gimmicks. I can see how it must’ve been quite thrilling for those early audiences to experience her talent firsthand and right in front of them when the show was all new and completely original.
Fitch was amazing. That rubber leg collapse he does at the end is the kind of unique weirdness that takes your breath away. There's a lovely video on UA-cam of him doing the number in 2019 (when he would have been 85).
This was the first Tonys I ever saw. Andrea Mcardle instantly became my hero; I was blown away. The next week, I saved up my lunch money and purchased the original cast LP(they were only $5 then) and wore it out over the next year. Trivia: the original Sandy was a rescue dog just hours away from being euthanized when he was picked to star in the show.
Once every year or so, I end up back at this video. And it never fails... I just teared up/got choked up maybe 30 times.... And I’m not ashamed. That’s show biz babe!
This was the 1st Bdway Show I ever saw....and this was the Cast. God....I can STILL remember the smell of Ny,the Hotel,the theater,etc. This Was great!!
I understand the hype back in the day now. This is outstanding. How do you make likeable adults with those aboslutely adorable girls? Make them over the top characters and let them be as silly as they are bad. Hannigan and Rooster are also children that were never allowed to be children. Then Warbucks it's the straight man to all of them. Also, how wonderful is that those girls look like real girls? It's so well done that it seems like nobody in the cast take the sing and dance seriously. Audiences must have ROARED every night
I think you touched on one of the brilliant choices the producers made. Much earlier in the show’s pre-Broadway development, Hannigan was straight “mean” with no humor and played by a different actress. When they shifted gears, cast Dorothy Loudon, and added a strong element of humor to the role, everything changed for the better. Similar positive shift occurred when they moved Andrea into the lead and through her made Annie tougher and much less Shirley Temple sweet. This made it feel fresher and more original than just having a cutesy mugging kid singing songs. I think Mike Nichols was very involved in these and other decisions when he joined the producing team and they basically struck gold. Not to take anything away from Martin Charnin as I know the show was his baby from start to finish. Also nice analysis of the Hannigan and Roster dynamic i.e. never allowed to be children.

I like the movie "Annie", and besides watching the Tony Awards, the rest of the year I'm not that connected with musicals (also very picky with movie-musicals). I was looking for a version of "tomorrow" for my daughter and find this. That girl, Andrea, you're right, she has the natural quality of a "real" girl. But also, and this may sound funny, it sounds "spiritual" too!. It gets you right in the heart, and I've heard this song a lot, even before I knew it was part of a play.

And he was a gift who came to the show before it's last month finish in 1976, up at Goodspeed. If you watch the full Tony Awards broadcast, Mike says the most amazing things about my father, Martin. Because it was Martin-start to finish. I know as I grew up with this man. Charles, Tom and MC developed those characters and worked with the actors to make each one unique. It was always a very sophisticated show-for adults and kids-which became a kids show. In the end, the perfect musical. And proud to have inherited a piece of this legacy. Thanks for continuing the conversation.
i saw this cast do Annie on Broadway (at the Alvin) when i was in college. somehow my dad got me tickets. i still haven't seen anything since in N-Y top this.
Looks like only Warbucks is mic'd here (though with the video quality it is hard to tell who else may be. Area mic's can be very effective for the sake of television. (That's why they were used in many shows with live audiences) Though, I hate to burst your bubble, but the principles were all mic'd in the actual stage production. At least they were by the time Hutton played Hannigan in 1980.
@@ActorAaronBooth , the original cast wasn't mic'd. I recently saw an interview with Andrea McArdle saying that they had floor mics. She was laughing about singing Maybe to try to get the little girl to sleep but she was singing at the top of her lungs.

AM and what a big voice she had to be so young and I remember her playing Arnold Horshack’s little sister on Welcome Back Kotter and the little girl on stage is played by Danielle B, who went on to do Archie’s Place and All in the Family in the lasts couple of seasons. In the 30 years I have roamed the Earth, I’ve seen multiple Annies come and go. First was a Jr production at a middle school, then the 1999 Disney TV version, the 1982 movie, the 2014 big screen remake and almost two years ago the NBC broadcast. All in that order! And yet, I have not had the time to find a regional full length production. And this classic was part of my theatre baby steps
Born in '81, first show I recall seeing- touring Company in Baltimore. Recall nothing of show; Mom told sister & I to wait till after show to get souvineers; but by then they were packing up!

I played keyboards for a local community theater production several years back, and was quite surprised at the talent they were able to find. I've seen several different productions over the years, but none will ever stand against the original Broadway cast.
The vocals are very difficult, esp. for kids. Most local theater/high school productions of 'Annie', or, god-forbid, the hideous 'Annie Jr.' (simplified vocals, but that just invites the casting of crappier singers) just make you want to cringe and crawl under a chair.
Annie was my first Broadway show. I was 4 and knew every word. When the curtain came up I wanted to go on the stage too. When I started singing along my mom tried to shut me up and a woman sitting in front of us turned around and said “No, you sing, honey.” I still have the Playbill and the very played out album.

I remember seeing Andrea McCardle on the Carol Burnett show doing the original "Annie" songs in 1976 and was just blown away away by her singing.. she was the best Annie" ever. and Dorothy Loudon was so fantastic as Miss Hannigan.. she was also the best ever, a shame she wasn't in the movie, but they wanted a name.. she was so much better than Carol Burnett who did the movie ... Still have the original cast songs, and play them on my ipod.. original Broadway cast was so much better than the lame movie !
But Carol is a legend in her own right. Not sure she should be compared to anyone else. Its clear the role in that movie was rewritten to match her personality and comedic talents.
And I have to say that the pup who played Sandy looked just like my puppies Cookie and Annabelle, except my girls weren't mutts, they were Cairn Terrier's (same breed as Toto from The Wizard of Oz!!!)

Does anyone know why they changed Rooster's costume? I saw Gary Beach as Rooster in the 1st touring company in 1978 and he was wearing the ill-fitting suit that he wears in the Easy Street clip here on UA-cam not the outfit that Robert Fitch is wearing here. Yet I've seen pictures of Robert Fitch in the suit as well. I'm just curious when it changed.
I certainly wasn't born when the Broadway show first premiered and I certainly admire the performances of this cast to me the best cast is from the 1999 television film starring Kathy Bates.
It was pretty watered down and dropped about 1/3 of the musical numbers that had been in the original stage play. The play had a real depression-era NY desperation vibe, plus it was a Christmas play. The movie devolved into some weird hard-to-follow chase scene near the end. The film is a classic now, but it flopped in 1982. That was the summer of E.T., not 'Annie.' Low #s @ the box office.

I agree. All other productions feel like a cheap knock-off. Both movies made were horrible, didn't do the score justice.

Does anyone know why they changed Rooster's costume? I saw Gary Beach as Rooster in the 1st touring company in 1978 and he was wearing the ill-fitting suit that he wears in the Easy Street clip here on UA-cam not the outfit that Robert Fitch is wearing here. Yet I've seen pictures of Robert Fitch in the suit as well. I'm just curious when it changed.

I certainly wasn't born when the Broadway show first premiered and I certainly admire the performances of this cast to me the best cast is from the 1999 television film starring Kathy Bates.
Do you at least recognize the one member of this cast who was also in the 1999 movie?

I love the movie Annie [ So Awesome]
It was pretty watered down and dropped about 1/3 of the musical numbers that had been in the original stage play. The play had a real depression-era NY desperation vibe, plus it was a Christmas play. The movie devolved into some weird hard-to-follow chase scene near the end. The film is a classic now, but it flopped in 1982. That was the summer of E.T., not 'Annie.' Low #s @ the box office.
Does anyone remember Forbidden Broadway’s take on this? “I’m 30 years old...tomorrow. And I haven’t worked since I did Annie. When I was 10!”

Sarah didn’t join the cast until about a year after this clip. The girl with the braids is Diana Barrows, who played Tessie.
No, SJ Parker joined the cast in 1979. Diana Barrows is the immortal kid with the vaudeville stage presence that pulled off 'Tessie' here.
