"I knew it when I was in the front." Ah, Kelly will always be my favorite Sheila. This is my favorite Tony opening number of all time and it's fantastic to see in this quality! ACL is a favorite of mine. Thanks for bringing another smile to my face, Aurora!
The show that changed Broadway forever and began a period of experimentation and daring new productions like we’d never seen up to that point. There are so many shows that likely never would have seen the great lights of Broadway had A Chorus Line never happened. From the score, to Bennett’s impeccable staging right down to every brilliant member of that original cast. Thank you Spiderwoman for posting this - I hope your younger subscribers realize the debt so many of the great shows to wow us in the last 40 plus years owe to this show. Thank you as always for posting!
Saw the original cast in 75… one of the best experiences of my life! Those dancers were so courageous putting their lives stories on the stage. Up a steep and very narrow stairway…
Donna McKechnie never fails to amaze. Her acting choices here are superb, and her dancing just beyond. One of the most underrated broadway dancers of all time.
Saw this at Drury Lane in 77 - I was still in school but after seeing ACL I started going to the Dance Centre in Floral Street. It changed my life. There was some issue that Donna MccKchnie wasn't permitted to perform by Equity. and Bennett threatened to pull the show. I think they came to some arrangement. Petra Siniawski was Cassie when I saw it. Amazing time to be alive - musicals were brilliant, dancers were everywhere (hence the legwarmer craze in the 80s)
The crazy thing is that they did the Tonys at the Shubert. Crazy to rehearse an award show and still do 8 shows a week all in the same theatre. I hope they do more Tony Awards in the bigger Broadway Theatres instead of Radio City or the Beacon.
WOW! This has got to be the most picture perfect ,clear version of this recording Ive ever seen. It's fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing this with us Aurora :-D
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Compared to the others this is almost in HD is THAT clear. I don't know where you got it from or whether you've had it cleaned up yourself but the quality is outstanding. Thank again. :-)
On the Tonys saw the disappointment on Roberts face when Sammy's name was called as Best supporting actor...it was only a split second because he then hugged his wonderful co-star. RIP to both of those wonderful actors!
Thank you for posting this. Some dear friends in that cast, especiallySammy Williams. Like some of the other comments said, this show changed everything.
Wayne Cilento my friend, Tommy Walsh choreographer for Mitzi Gaynor Show and his assistant Baayork Lee. Michael Lichtefeld choreographer for The Kenley Players. My Lord how time flys.
I love how long this segment is. Nowadays they show like 30 seconds from the nominated musicals. It’s so frustrating! Cut some of the scripted bologna and show me song and dance!

So glad you enjoyed and thanks for noting the quality. So great that we have that classic Kelly line so nicely preserved here.

Good points, and I do hope that younger people who have never seen this will take a look.
For you younger people, yes that woman in the tan leotard on the front right at 1:00 is Kelly Bishop, who played Emily Gilmore in Gilmore Girls.
Kelly Bishop won the Tony that year & so did Edward Hermann. 20 something yrs later they would play Emily & Richard Gilmore.
@@yamil.343 and hal linden who was uncredited as chad in the season 2 ep "there's the rub" performed that night too!
"I knew it when I was in the front." One of the best lines from the show.
And Baby's mother from Dirty Dancing.

Rest well, Robert LuPone. 8/27/2022
Aw, how sad. I just heard that Pamela Blair had passed too. So much time has gone by and you forget sometimes.
Pennilyn Lott can't even

You just won the internet! 😂

One of the best openings to a musical 💯🔥
The guy shouting the directions? He’s patti lupone’s brother.
Oh my goodness -- I never realized this -- nor did I know that he's also played Dr. Cusamano on the Sopranos. What a career.
Such a wonderful musical. Takes me right back to the 70s

love hearing the raucous applause, such talent!!!
Simply iconic. And I love that the 'worst' dancers on that stage are still infinitely more talented than myself. 😅
The best musical ever !
First Broadway show I ever saw ❤️ Not this year of it, but I'll never forget seeing the cast on the street afterwards

Glad you were pleased with the quality---that's why I put it up, even though other versions have long been on UA-cam.

i have to be in this show one day.
I hope you get it!
What “Company” didn’t fully change on Broadway, “A Chorus Line” did.
I can't wait until we can go see musicals/plays again. I know Bway is opening later this year, but I want to wait a bit longer personally.

Omg...Really? No one knows that! OMG!!!!!

Can u do some Aida
I had intended to, for the 20th anniversary last year, but it seemed as if all the major numbers had been performed on TV.
Aida celebrates its 150th anniversary this year on December 24!
Who knew it premiered on Christmas Eve?
It was the Maestro's Christmas present to the world!
Between the original cast, B&T, local productions, I've seen this 16 times. The movie was HORRIBLE!!!!
