- Always Board Never Boring recently received a review copy of the Wave 7 Fight Against Evil expansion for one of his favourite games, Masters of the Universe Battleground, from Archon Studio. In this video he unboxes the expansion, assembles the miniatures, and takes a look at what this new faction brings to the table.
Please note: there is a minor mistake at 21:55 when ABNB says She-Ra will gain 2 mana from the Fate card. She-Ra has a special ability that prevents her from gaining mana from Fate and Glory cards.
Archon studio are now able to sell Masters of the Universe outside of Europe and they are running a Gamefound campaign that will introduce new factions to the game while also letting new players get up to speed by purchasing everything that has already been released all at once. I do not like the Princess of Power characters, but I love how well Archon transformed them into figures.

They really are lovely miniatures. I can't see myself picking them when Skeletor, Beast Man, Mer-Man, and Evil-Lyn are waiting to play, but I am happy to have them in my collection just the same. I even ended up adding Swift Wind to my Gamefound pledge as it didn't seem right that every other major character had a mount and She-Ra didn't!
Yeah, Archon is great at sculpting! It's so nice to see all these MOTU characters, even The Great Rebellion 😅
Like you; I was a little disappointed by the announcement of this release, but when I was able to get my hands on it, assemble these very pretty figurines and play this new faction... I must say that I was completely won over 😃
Yeah, although I know who the characters are, I really only know She-Ra well, so it was the first expansion that I didn't buy on day one of release because I wasn't sure how much I would use them. But, it's actually a really fun faction, and I like the ideas baked into their playstyle. And yes, the miniatures are really good.
Luckily a lot of characters I was still waiting for seem to be turning up in the Gamefound campaign, and I cannot wait to get the Snake Men. I already have Hss with the Tyrantisaurus painted up and ready to go!

Thank you for watching and supporting the channel. Agreed - I am sorely missing a Mantenna and Modulok for the Evil Horde. Moss Man was a character I felt we needed, and he has turned up in the stretch goals already, and an early tease looked like Faker, so I'm feeling positive right now!

While I’ve watched every video on Battlegrounds for the painting and miniature reveals/reviews, I think this is the first one I’ve watched that actually analyzes the gameplay and character abilities… I was already smitten with the game on look and nostalgia alone, but by the power of Greyskull this looks and sounds like a really freaking good skirmish game 😮
I don’t think I can resist its siren call any longer… Time to figure how much game I can afford 😅

Cheers for the video! I know you mentioned that The Great Rebellion was not your cuppa tea...but with a price tag of "free", who can argue... :-D I will be backing the Captain pledge in the on-going campaign, to get my mitts on the two new Factions. Still need to find the Evil Horde and The Great Rebellion for later.
There's a decent amount of stuff that I can use in the box - terrain and cards - but my daughter expressing an interest is an added bonus. Because I was so impressed with the review copy of the Great Rebellion, I have now added Swift Wind to my pledge in the Gamefound campaign, so free or not, it won me over enough to encourage me to buy something else for that faction.
I have backed at the captain level to get the two new factions and Zodac on the throne, and I have added in the dice tower too (as well as Swift Wind). That will mean I basically have everything at this point as I already have every other wave and all the promos.
Really curious to see how this faction will fare in the tournament scene. So far dealing damage has often been more efficient than setting up buffs and debuffs. I fully agree about the need to flesh out the narrative aspect of the game too.
It's quite a squishy faction. It might end up getting a battering. It has some cool ideas, and in the right hands it could probably be pretty devastating, especially with the extra special abilities on the Fate cards.
I think calling that purple plastic "visually interesting" might be a bit of understatement.
The bow armed "Beau" is named Bow....I'm sure someone in the writers room thought that was really clever. And the Angel named Angella. Man were the 80s simpler times.
I completely agree with the need for more narrative/campaign options. I think that's the main aspect that really holds me back from getting into this game. Well, that and the loads of other stuff I should get to first.
I'm fairly certain that getting your kids hooked on minis games is against the law. I read that on the 'net somewhere.
Ha. Yeah, Bow the beau using his combow. It's a very silly franchise, but in the best kind of way.
I would definitely love to see them leaning more into narrative games. With this cast of characters, and so many existing stories to draw from, I think it would be a big selling point for the game.
Ok, i have to admit that i was on the fence with this expansion but their teamwork centerd playstyle made me jump for it. Mighty Bonk also played a part LOL. Thanks for solid review :)
I don't think I will be able to field a team without Mighty Bonk now! But yes, it seems like a really fun faction.
I really do like this set (though I’ve had similar thoughts about all the previous waves) the terrain pieces are so simple and are really easy to paint with a bit of Speedpaint and they look great. Next up on my painting table are the six character models, I really like how Archon have turned what were effectively Barbie dolls with swords in the 80s into kickass warrior women (and token dude) they look fantastic, I just hope my painting skills are up to the task.
They have done a great job with the miniatures, and the two new factions in the campaign look amazing too.

Today on the show Erik was firing off some quality puns, but they didn't land well. Remember, what's funny to you isn't funny to everyone. I'm sure Skeletor finds a lot of things funny that you wouldn't ever laugh about. Just remember, whatever kind of jokes you like, be kind to each other.

I'd love to play this game. I'd play Glimmer.
A normal team is usually four or five characters (depending on how many items you give them). Glimmer is the weakest character in the set and at 14 points she's quite easy to slot into a team, but she will need a lot of protection.
well, at first I was bommed that I went for the CMON version relaunch... but at least shipping does not goes to my exact country, so I would need to ship it to a familiy in the US, and then visit them, then have an empty suitcase, and hope it doesnt go above the limit when bringing it back.
even if this one looks sligly more fun... maybe?
I've never played the CMoN MotU game so I can't say how they compare.
Sounds like it might be too many hoops to jump through for you on this one though! I hope one day you might get a chance to give it a whirl one way or another, though.

I am interested, but I made my choice. I went with CMON's game and I cannot justify getting all these minis all over again.
That's understandable. I would still like to play CMoN's game at some point, but as it isn't ever going to get a UK retail release I had to pass on it.

Hi. Great vid. Thank you! I am coming back to the game. I have heard the rulebook has been updated. Is this available anywhere? The Archon website links are dead at the mo.
The rules are being updated as part of the Gamefound campaign. All backers will get the updated rules, which adds in all the stuff for vehicles and 4-player games as well as clearing up various FAQs. I don't think those rules are finished yet, but I expect they will go up online once they are. I have also been told there will be an updated FAQ online too.

More MotU painting is on the way, but not for She-Ra, these particular models are way down the queue, I'm afraid.
As an interested new player that won’t buy everything, would you recommend this set say over both wave 1s? Or outside of the base what would you recommend to dip my toes in? Thanks!
It depends what you are looking for. If you want to expand your build options from the core set, something like Wave 1 is a good move. If you really like the original lineup of MotU characters then I would say Wave 1 is a must as that's where you get Teela and Beast Man.
But if you want to have different factions to play with, or you want to do crazy stuff like three- and four-way battles, then you will want to look at the Great Rebellion, the Evil Horde, Snake Men, or Preternian Heroes.
I have collected everything, and at the moment the thing I don't really use at all is Dawg-O-Tor on the Battle Ram. That may change as they add more vehicles to the game. If someone twisted my arm and said you can only collect a few things, then I would opt for all the expansions that expand the Evil Warriors and the Masters of the Universe factions, but ultimately, you might just want to go for the stuff that has your favourite characters in.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Thank you for the reply and that makes a lot of sense. I doubt I’ll ever play more than 2 players, so I’ll focus on expanding evil warriors and MotU factions for now.
Waves 1, 3, and 5 add to the Masters of the Universe and the Evil Warriors, so those are your first options for expanding those factions (they also have some of the coolest characters). If you decide to get more teams later, all the factions should be at retail as well.
Do you know if the terrain pieces will be available separately?
They have never done terrain separately so far but I know some people have been asking for it on the Gamefound campaign so perhaps they will think about it.
How does this game system compare to the CMON Master of the Universe skirmish game? Looks like a lot of overlap but really cool.
I've never played the CMoN game, but there are differences. This isn't a one-vs-many or co-op game. It's a head-to-head skirmish game, with a lot of focus on building your team and creating synergies. I'm hoping to do a video that drills into gameplay a bit more soon, but there are some playthrough videos on the campaign page that show things in motion that should help.
One thing to note is this game has been going for two years now, and it gets regular support. We are up to wave 7 of retail releases, so we have been getting really good support, with new releases every three months or so. That steady stream of new build options, and new factions, has kept the game fresh.

The art on the cards is not good. 🙁
Art is variable. Sometimes it's really good, sometimes it's serviceable, sometimes it's not good at all. There are a few real clunkers that I have talked about in other videos where I wasn't sure what they were going for at all. For the most part I like the style of the art, but it's the miniatures, terrain, and the battle mats that really sell the look of the game on the tabletop.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring true the miniatures are dead on. It's strange as there is plenty of art on the toy packaging, Comics or even still frames from the cartoons they could have used.
