  • G'day Guys and Gals!
    In this video i show you all the steps involved in fitting a Safari Snorkel to your Isuzu MU-X or D-MAX. It is very similar installation however for most 4wd's and the instructions supplied with the safari snorkel will specify all the tools and sizes of holes etc. The snorkel will also come with all templates necessary for the installation.
    You will need a few parts and tools to be able to carry out this job they are -
    -Stepper drill bit that goes up to 16mm
    -hole saw bit 111mm
    -drill
    -die grinder and die bits
    -sandpaper
    -biscuit wheel
    -touch up pain - same colour as car
    -round file
    -assorted ratchets, sockets and spanners
    -trim/plastic rivet removal tool
    -tape
    -marker pen
    -screwdrivers
    -Sika flex sealant
    They are the main tools and extra parts you will require : )
    The installation begins by removing the Isuzu MU-X air box, inner guard liner and intake pipe that sits inside the inner guard. Double check the template aligns perfectly with the snorkel.
    You then need to tape up the guard and put the template onto the guard. Using a marker pen, mark out your holes and remove the template.
    Then using the stepper drill, drill out the holes to 16mm and a pilot hole for your hole saw hole.
    Use the 111mm hole saw to drill out the large snorkel intake hole and then de-burr all of your holes. Test fit the snorkel with the bolts in and tape and mark your A pillar trim mount. Then drill out your A pillar trim mount holes to 8mm and de-burr holes.
    You need to then enlarge the hole on the inner guard where the standard intake pipe goes through. Using the template supplied mark out and die grind out the hole to the larger diameter and test fit the intake pipe. Clean down all metal swarf and use your touch up paint to seal up all of the bare metal.
    While the paint is drying you need to modify the intake pipe into the airbox. Remove the pre-spinner pipe and disassemble. Remove the ridge on the pipe and sand completely flat and then reassemble using sika flex sealant to make the intake to the airbox completely water tight. Seal up the drain bungs on the bottom of the airbox with sika flex as well.
    Now its time to fit the snorkel, intake pipe and airbox back to the vehicle and double check everything is water tight. Now just chuck your inner guard liner back in and you can stand back and admire your awesome handy work!
    Thanks alot for watching guys! If you enjoyed this video and would like to see more videos like this. Please like and Subscribe to my channel : )

    • @LowRangeNick

      Hey Brodie! You can if you like, but the rubber pipe is soft and tightens down with 2 hose clamps so it should form a water tight seal. So it isnt necessary. 😊

    Great install vid! I wouldn't have have sealed the drain valves on the airbox though. Rain sometimes moves past the ram intake at the top and gets into the airbox. The DA (Ducks Ass) valves on the airbox let water out but not in. Blocking them might lead to a water pooling issue if you were driving in heavy rain for a few hours.

    • @SkidsUpNZ

    If you block up the water drains, I'd also advise to reverse the snorkel inlet - to keep out rain. If it was me, I'd leave the drains as is - they are meant to be one way valves.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  5 років тому

    Hi Nick. Love all you videos and they're very informative. I recently had an ironman snorkel installed on my D-Max. I see in your video that you put sealant in the rubber drains of the air filter box to make it waterproof. I haven't done so. Is it recommended? Plus can you tell me what happens to the rain water which can be sucked in while driving in rain especially during torrential monsoon rains.. Does it go out from the drain in the air filter box? It says that the ironman snorkel has rain deflectors but some rain water would definitely get sucked in.

    Hi Nick,
    I am struggling to find what Isuzu label 'Titanium Silver 529', touch up paint, I see you are using Dupli-color, can you let us know what the silver aerosol paint is you are using?

      Hey man! Im actually moving house at the moment and all my stuff is at the other joint. I cant remember what the number is. I didn't actually get it perfectly matched i just grabbed one that was close. I asked isuzu about touch up paint but they don't even make one! So id probably recommend going to an auto store that makes up paint and give them your vehicle details they should be able to get you or make you one up thats exactly right. I think autobarn, supercheap are pretty good for it.

    Nice work but I don’t think you should block the drain at the bottom of the airbox. If a lot of water gets into the snorkel ( say from driving in torrential rain) it has nowhere to go an may eventually fill the box. Maybe some sort of tap on the drain to allow it to be closed off during deep water crossings but do it’s job of allowing water out under normal conditions.

    • @stevegoodwin5841
      @stevegoodwin5841 Рік тому

      100% agree, leave drain in place. A cyclonic head on the Safari fixes the bulk of water and dust and insects mostly.

    Hi, what about air filter being upgraded?

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  5 років тому

      The factory filter is a good filter designed specifically for the vehicle. Oiled filters like k & n are good but i wouldnt run one in a 4wd due to dust and grime clogging them up faster. With a standard dry filter you can knock dust and other stuff out of the filter easily if necessary. 😊👍

    I want to know more. I have an Isuzu kb300 2014 model. The wading depth of Isuzu is 500mm because there are electric things low down like the alternator so how will one sort out this because a snorkel is only one part of the vehicle wading depth problem... can you let me know if a snorkel is worth it if there are so many other things that can be effected when going deeper the the recommend wading depth?

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  5 років тому +1

      Hi there! The snorkel is to raise the air intake which is the main thing that will stop your vehicle when doing water crossings. The water wont cause other engine components to stop working or stall the engine. The only issues people usually have is with prolonged offroad abuse the alternator and electrical things may get dirty and not work as efficiently. But with a snorkel you can safely drive through water over your bonnet and not be too concerned about the engine taking in water and hydrolocking. 👍😊
