I always had the same concern getting a stainless snorkel you would get rain/snow/crap down it. I've run a stainless snorkel on the nav for a bit over 2 years and the first 6 months or so I would put a plastic bag over the snorkel head during heavy storms out of concern haha but then didn't do it a couple of times and checked airbox after and was all good and I've never worried about it since and never ever seen any water/mud etc in the airbox, few leaves before from smashing through thick jungle that got sucked in, but obviously never went past the air filter itself.
You hear bad stories about people getting water down their stainless snorkel and wrecking an engine but I've tried as hard as I can and had the nav in every possible weather condition multiple times and yet to see any water down there. The only time I ever got water in the airbox was on the previous 4wd with a plastic forward facing snorkel driving down the highway for an hour in pouring rain and the filter and airbox were all wet when I pulled up.
My main annoyance with the stainless snorkel is they are f**king loud right next to your ear when the window is down and they are on the drivers side haha (I also have a custom stainless airbox which makes it noiser again). But I personally prefer the looks of them and they are also stronger, eg smashing into a bank they hold up whereas a plastic one wont (depending how hard you hit). I smashed my side into a bank so hard that the inner guard cracked but the snorkel was fine and saved it from more damage 😂
I've gone a stainless again on the patrol because of the above two reasons and the patrol has an airbox on the passenger side so it wont be noisy in my ear when I put the window down 😁
Sorry for the novel haha that's just my personal experience and I think both are great and have pro's and con's, the plastic one looks good on the cruiser and should be perfect for you 👌
Ps everyone needs to definitely make sure their airbox is properly sealed too when doing deep water crossings, seen it happen many times on the tracks. People think they are good cause the shop put a snorkel on but the factory airbox isn't properly sealed and they get a heap of water down their engine anyway

You and I have the same philosophy when it comes to 4WD mods. I like them to be a much reversible as possible, and if not, for them to look as much OEM as possible. And I think the Safari snorkel is one good looking piece of kit. It really suits the 80 Series. It's what'll put on my 80, when I decide it's time to fit one. Well done boys. 👍

Great video. I ran a safari snorkel on my disco 2 then stuck with plastic for my disco 3. They're ideal for over here in the UK. In the summer have it facing forward then turn it around in the winter to help prevent all the road spray and rocksalt from being sucked in as much

When you do your diff breathers, use the original steel breather barbs & push a bit of hose over them & push the stiff plastic breather hose into that rubber hose. Those little plastic clip in breather fittings that come in the kit don't last when fitted to diffs. Vibration, sticks & dirt kills them quick & they can leak in water.

Had a navara come into work, was running like absolute crap, engine light on as well, plugged the computer in and it showed airflow sensor had a fault. Considering the car has only 35k on the clock, a fault was a bit suss. Popped the air filter top off and it was 1/2 full of water and the filter was dripping wet!! The stainless snorkel opening must have been facing towards the wind the night before and it rained pretty much most of the night. The air box had also been plugged up for water crossings so removed the plugged, new filter and somehow no damage done to the motor! Told the owner to make some removable type bungs for the air box and keep them in the glove box for river crossings. Safari is the best choice for sure.

There's a few lips/catch points to gather any water that gets down a Safari Snorkel, and then the black plastic material is a good option for absorbing a bit of heat, to evaporate any water collected in the snorkel, while the car is parked. End result is if any water does get down it, it can evaporate while you're parked. A good, simple design.
Centre punch is your friend for the Safari Install. Just make sure to disconnect the battery before using it on the pillar.

I ended up changing from a safari to stainless as I found the ram head turned into a shovel in the rain and filled my airbox more in a average morning trip to work then my staino does in a month 👍. When working on painted surfaces, use masking tape and cover whole area. Rear-facing, big-tube snorkels are really in the "Wanker-Factor" camp. Most engines do not need the huge "Look at me" pipes nor do they need a vacuum forming on the air intake at highway speeds.

Got the Safari snorkel to. It’s made by a big company that puts proper engineered RnD in to its product. The forward facing Ram head is proven and has had a big company behind it for many many years without significant change.
Small companies or back yard jobs is an eBay type risk in my opinion. Sure some might be ok. But not worth the risk and they look a bit.
Also, maybe stainless can take a hit, but I’d prefer a snorkel to be reasonably sacrificial so the force isn’t transferred in to the body causing worse more expensive damage.

Good advice The reverse style S/S Snorkels R 30% less efficient because they don’t get as much air rammed into them & R noisey & where they join @ the air box the seal comes loose & ends up falling apart causing gaps where water can get in I had one on my last ranger this time went for the plastic factory ford model doesn’t look as good but I’m looking for usefulness over looks this time after doing my homework on snorkels it’s always better going for the factory unit but safari snorkels is a we’ll know Ozzie company that has a good name & tested units 👍😎

Its good but its got that induction noise all the time wich you get used to eventually but my cousin has a parado he has the normal safari snorkel on it and he reakons apart from his not having the induction noise he dosnt notice any difference between the two

Have snorkels on all our off road vehicles, but everyone seems to think it's for water. Trust me that 2x4 isn't getting across most mud puddles. We have them installed because of dust keeps the air intake above the dust line especially in convoy

only so much air can be held in the snorkel at once anyway so that means a facing forward snorkel will not increase air intake or make more power but still good choice looks better than a stano

I have a safari snorkel on my surf and with a supercharger on the diesel there is definitely induction noise...haha

Being very honest, now check your airbox has a good seal on the lid. After Sam's airbox/snorkel let water in on the last livin4x4 video, you'd wanna make sure the entire intake line is well sealed

Could always just loosen the hose clamp and turn the snorkel head around, will still run exactly the same. I do it for mine when hitting big holes so no water splashes up.

Can't really go wrong with the Safari, proven to be a great product for how many decades now? The performance difference between SS and plastic are negligible, what matters for flow are tube length and restrictions. On a typical 4cl/6cl turbo diesel we all run, you'd be lucky to see 2kw difference with 32-33" tyres. I'd rather go plastic myself and spend the rest of the money on something like a front mount/top mount IC. Standard coolers are pretty rubbish for pressure drop after the core and heatsoak. The 80 looks good with the safari, it fits well with the guard and doesn't grab your eye because its shiny tube with bad fitment.

Thanks for the video. I'm concerned that the Hilux models with a circular air box can suck in a lot of dirt from under the wheel arch, especially as there is a cheap ill-fitting plastic liner with fragile push fasteners. Instead of a schnorkel. I'm thinking of shifting the air intake to inside the engine bay at the coolest point and least likely to catch dust or water. You're right that the deepest water crossing is around the top of the wheels. As well as all the parts vulnerable to water, there are your door mounted speakers and instrument panel. The idea of a ram effect is nonsense as the filter is a major barrier. However, schnorks do look good, even sexy. By the way, I've seen other plastic Safari models that need an oval hole, which is more difficult to cut with a hole saw. Happy submarining !

The ram head wont ram much air down as the turbo does the sucking in the air as much it can, also water has still gotten down to the filer with a Ram head on my old 4X4 i owned years ago and went with a Cyclone top intake.

Only thing with a ram head (and this is more for modern cars) is that they can in fact cause over boosting causing the car to shut down but like you said they are a lot quieter

I've had both never got water or sticks down either now the one major benefit of stainless snorkels and why most comp trucks run them is water ingress on bog holes or water crossing the down side of stainless snorkels is you either have a massive hole cut in you guard or they hang out and the bigger you go the bigger the bigger the hole or more they hang out the flip side plastic snorkels are molded to shape around your guard so they look neater

And by far the best snorkel head is the cyclonic factory Toyota one

Personal preference I went stainless snorkel and air box 😅 but my pig is built as a weekend worrier. But unfortunately I have been using it as a daily 😕 and you get over the induction noise quickly and as for water in the stainless doesn't seem to be a problem for me.... but in saying a plastic snorkel is a good option especially if daily driving

Plastic is just better and stainless just adds wank factor🤣

  • @vaughanrichards698

I built a 4" stainless for my gq facing rearward and tested for 20 mins in heavy rain (not much of a problem in ausie as you don't get so much proper rain) and got 300ml of water in airbox because water travels along the outside to the end and gets sucked in with airflow. 4" safari plastic head and a coat of raptor and problem solved. Can still face over screen or backwards so trees and scrub don't smash it off. 30 degrees egt reduction also over old design safari plastic straw at open road speed shows far better flow. On the 80 I agree with your choice...
I enjoy the channel but lay off the adverts thanks

Plastic Safari snorkels have been engineered and around for a long time. I’ve seen the pretty staino ones drink water in heavy rain. Been using plastic Safaris for over 20 years and never had any problem.

I think the stainless snorkel look good but I will be going safari plastic snorkel on my 105 turbo I don't think I will be doing to many river crossings but I do alot of highway ks and im pretty sure the air they pull in higher up is cooler then the air around the road or head light area but probably just a myth lol.

Are you going to run a pre-filter over the ram-air intake at the top, there a great idea for dust. Seeya Rob
