  • How to Make Sugar Cane Syrup (the Old Fashioned Way).
From the farm to the bottle, we take you through the full process of harvesting, pressing, cooking down & bottling. (Be sure to stick around for part 2, as well.)
We take a trip over to EcoFarm in Plant City, FL to visit with our friend Jon Butts. Jon is an experienced farmer who is well known in the Tampa area for the organic items he brings to market, but he is known equally well for his contribution on the air with WNMF 88.5, where he hosts the popular program 'The Sustainable Living Show' on Monday Mornings at 10am. Whether you live nearby, or even if you are outside the Tampa area - you can listen live through the station website or listen to past episodes as well - www.wmnf.org/category/news/sus...

Interesting process. Fewer and fewer people doing old school harvesting of any crops. Kudos to john and his crew.

Another great video! I've been looking for one of those old syrup pots since the 90s 😂. A friend used them as waterlily pots.

Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL - not yet. Not enough sugar cane yet to justify the expense.

Saw one of these cane presses while on a sugarcane farm in mountains of Costa Rica. They used horses instead of a golfcart

Sugarcane-sugar industry is the most circular economy, the factory even burn the screwed fiber to cook the juice for sugar.

If he wants to make harvesting faster, he could mimic a chainsaw mill. Use a long crosscut bar'ed Chainsaw mounted to a tractor or golf cart, and mow down stalks. He could also put together an electric powered variation if he wants. They make bars up to 7 and 8 feet long. I Use one to make lumber.

This sounds great, however... the way you cut the first crop has a profound effect on the yield of subsequent rattoon crops which can range from a lot less that initial cane up to ~ 20% more. Not sure a chainsaw will give the desired result.

I live in Plant City and cook sugarcane in a 60 gallon pot and use a1909 Golden's #2 mill to press my cane. Where is this farm located at? I have not heard of them.

Tom Lawson glad to hear others are still doing it the old fashioned way, I since have found someone up by me doing this way also. I would look him up online, I know Jon is even on Facebook. I don't know the property address, I just remember it be off 301 somewhere in strawberry land.

Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL ... another great video. I live in Miami. Sea Water Rising and an overcrowded City is a recipe for disaster. Global warming is very real. In the very near future if don't have land, collecting your own Rainwater, growing your own food, being self-sufficient. You will be in serious trouble and much sooner than you think. I have my own ideas about building tiny homes within a mesh Dome. A mesh Dome that can easily be covered by Hurricane resistant panels. A solar-powered mesh Dome where you can grow vegetables in elevated raised beds. Protected from hurricanes, flooding, fire and insects. All on land surrounded by bamboo barriers and Common Sense permaculture. Yes I'm a Navy vet, web developer, watch all your videos and itching to buy land. Ready to the show the world that building small homes within a convertible solar powered mesh Dome is the future of sustainable living.

Hey Aaron! We are out of compost at this time and not very happy with local supplies at this time. We have some really well broken down mulch if your interested. I probably have 100 emails to catch up on, hopefully tomorrow. My apologies for the delayed response.

Wait how is Jim a diabetic if he’s growing all this natural food?
Are we all doomed no matter what or did he have a poor diet before or does he currently still drink soda and such?
