I had to pause the video to tell you how happy the expression “flat as a flitter” made me. My grandmother was the only person I have ever heard use that phrase and she passed away in 1984. I’m enjoying your cane videos and learning much about the process. I have wondered for years if I could grow some and make the syrup on a very small home scale. Where I live now it isn’t always easy to find the good stuff and sometimes on a cold day you just gotta have some cornbread and molasses. Seeing your demo with the board shows me that I can figure out a way do it one of these days.
Glad you and the girls are on the mend. Thank you for the cane mill instructions, I like the music it makes as the gears turn. Take care of yourself and I look forward to your next video!
Fun Fact Fridays are simply awesome!!! It's because in this day and time, facts are hard to come by ... Really interesting Justro. Thanks for taking us along.

Justro, I sure did like this video today. I enjoyed seeing how the cane mill works. I had never seen this process before! Make sure Bear gets an extra treat tonight for the long day of guarding he put in today! I love Bear! Praying you and girls are back to 100% very soon!

Flat as a Flitter! Haven't heard that one in a few years.....Justro, I never realized just how similar pressing sorghum was to squeezing sugar cane. We have a vertical cane press and use an antique tractor to drive the press. We love spending a full day every February making cane syrup. Blessings to you! Thanks for sharing.
I love watching the Amish in scottsville ky making sorghum with a press like yours and four teams of horses running it everything is gravity flow all the way to a jars
Thanks brother! The brûlée was yummy! We would love to help with the sorghum next time. Glad you are all feeling better. Let us know if you need anything. 😊
Howdy Justro- I sure like your setup there. I wish I could be there to help you get this done. All I would want is some cornbread to put some lasses on lol. Hope y’all have a great weekend. God bless
I love your videos of all the history you share I will keep you and your daughters In my prayers to get better . My oldest daughter makes homemade maple syrup which is alot different from the syrup you do it's so exciting watching all the hard work you do when showing us how you do sugar cane but great results thank you for sharing, take care stay safe and God bless
We did maple syrup back on the farm and cold nights ice would form in the sap buckets -- the ice was pure water increasing sugar content of what remained. You might experiment with taking your sorghum juice and partially freezing it to remove the ice block before spending all day boiling. Let that ice block melt out and recheck your brix from the ice water and the remaining juice to see if it helps.
I can imagine you needeing lots of lubricant for those gears. You actually just talked about a reservoir that helps them gesrs run smooth. I could watch you squeeze cane all day.
I remember my granddaddy giving me a piece of sugar cane to chew on. I am pretty sure he was disappointed that I did not love it like he did. I was too used to the refined white sugar to appreciate the flavor from the cane juice.
@@metcalfmills5679 I meant tell the facts, you did a pretty good job tonight explaining what has happened. Silence was leading many to conclude that your intentions weren’t good. I’ve continued to pray for y’all this last few months.
Oh yum! Fresh sorghum syrup, ain’t nothing better! Justin, you’re videos and knowledge are wonderful, always enjoy the old time way. I wanna try to make hominy corn, do you have a video on how to?

Here in Phoenix I grew sugar cane this summer. It was in a raised bed that gets watered.. it started off with a few green twigs I got from Amazon and grew to way over 10 ft clump about 2 ft found. At least 30 tall canes. I finally cut it a couple weeks ago ( in my climate it never really stops growing but it was getting so big and older canes were turning brown) I tried to taste it but didn't really find it very sweet, so should I do something different to get sweet? (I did hear to leave canes lay to get sweeter but not very practical in my yard) I grew for fun and now I'm leaving a few pieces to root in water to replant in a different spot for next year, but without a machine to squeeze it I'm not sure how I can process it. This year it all went into the trash.. so sad.. but the crushers I've seen on Amazon are just too expensive and overkill for my small simple use, anyone have alternatives?
I font know anything about sugar cane, but someone on here does. I have seen people make a squeezer but I don’t know what the cost would be.. Thank you!
Do you know of any cane mills available up there every one I've found over here hasn't been touched for decades and not gonna be touched for decades. Tore down my meadows today. Not as bad as I thought the main shaft is gonna need some work . All new babits will have to be poured, it's been ran dry and what grease was in them was hard as plastic.
That is fascinating Justin. I bet some ole farmers lost some digits back in the day working on one of those with the exposed gears like that. Is the juice good enough to drink fresh like that? It appears like it would be good. The verticle cane mills is the only one I have ever seen. I am like you, I like this horizontal one as you have.
Yes the juice is good to just drink. I have heard some stories about cane mills and gears. The only thing is that the juice might tun down a vertical mill rollers better, but I font know that it makes any difference. Thank you!
Good morning. I am a small farm. My cane field/patch is small. I'm looking for a press. I ordered a cheap one, broke 1 use. Sent that China made one back. Bad mistake. Can you recommend an inexpensive alternative? Hope you and the girls get better soon.

How often do you add oil in the bearing holes? How much and what weight?
