Ok, so I’m just seeing this for the first time and it’s gorgeous. The colors, textures and implied motion is sublime, and the scene is replete with the brilliant choice of added subtle value contrast towards the end. It seems like magic how you took your BR knowledge along with your experience at the coast and made a museum quality rendering. This should be gold gilt framed, if not already.
Alas it sits in a stack of paintings waiting to be hung in the house. Its actually one I just wanted to paint for a while. I took my time and just enjoyed playing. I have another one in the wings - maybe oneday I'll finish it - Thanks as always for the support and kind comments. 😃😎
Great seascape Paul! I will definitely try this one!
Hi Andy - Its a bit more fiddly than a standard Bob wave so put your own spin on it. I'll be painting more of this sort of thing in future. 😃
Your seascape is out of this world, you make it look so easy.
Thank you Deanie 😍 I hope you give it a go. Just have fun following along. But if it looks too big a task then just have a go at a section of the sky and drop in a calm sea like this one mua-cam.com/video/0vk_MDEIM18/v-deo.html Use the same color combo's as my video or paint them on a theme 😃
gorgeous blending on that warm glowing sky :) you're amazing
Thank you so much 😀
I so enjoy your videos and teaching and watch everyday. I often watch on TV UA-cam which doesn't allow comments so, now on computer, I wanted to say a big thanks for your wonderful help but also your wonderful and gentle voice.
Thank you so much Linda for tuning in and watching. I'm delighted to be a regular part of your day. There's lots more paintings for me to try so happy viewing - Best wishes - Paul 😃😍😎
Just watched this great seascape, you made it look so easy. Will have a go and see if mine comes out near yours. Thanks for the video
Hi Tony - I've been playing with paint and seascapes for a while and thats the real key to all this stuff. Playing, experimenting, correcting and making those happy accidents along the way. I still get in a pickle but over time I've learned to spot the challenges earlier and correct them sooner. Have fun and paint a uniquely yours version of this.😎
MAGNIFICENT!!
Thank you Karl. I'm a bit of a seascape nut and this was fun to do something a little different from my usual Bob Ross with a twist paintings. I've got a series of paintings lined up to paint so hope to see you here soon. 😎😎
@@PaulRansonArt Paul!! Can’t wait! I love the luminous light paintings, landscapes and seascapes-either way-it’s the luminosity that is so captivating! Can’t wait to see what you have in store! Best Always!

Thank you! Cheers! Ellaree. Happy New Year.😍
that looks fantastic. good variation on the typical shape and "eye" bit. much more natural looking. thanks for the video.
Glad you like it! I've wanted to show how to progress a painting for a while now. Time is the enemy so I painted this over a few sessions and tried to keep track of the process. Maybe the first of a few 'what next' for the Bob Ross artists 😎😎
Great voice! What a great painting. I love the way you paint the waves crashing the rock on the beach. A new subscriber here from Malaysia! Cheers.

Good evening, sir ... your paintings are amazing... you have great tips and different techniques, and I love watching .... I can't wait for the next one
So nice of you David - Lots more videos to come too 😃
Beautiful colours Paul
Many thanks
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
What a lovely seascape ! Watching you paint it Paul took me back to the days when I sat on the beach at HASTINGS eating fish n chips avoiding the sea gulls lol , I must give it a go and if it looks anything like yours at the end of it I shall be shocked , I mean very happy ! 😊
Hi Sylvia - oh your almost a local! Yes the smell of the sea and Fish n Chips. What could be more British. If the full scale painting seams a bit daunting then try painting a section like a cameo. Once you get your colours sorted them try a bigger canvas. Just have some fun. Happy New Year 🥰🥰
I will take your advice Paul start small ! Thank you , and Happy safe and successful New year to you and yours!
Thank you
You're welcome Diana. Pleased you enjoyed it. 😎😎
Hi Paul! thank you very much! Your explanations are so helpful and guiding well even such a very beginner as me! I have just finished the pink version of your sea tutorial. Please, make more sea paintings! Very appreciate! All the best to you, senhor Professor!!!❤👍
You're very welcome! Seascapes are one of my favourite scenes to paint. I'll be doing another one soon. Happy Painting - Paul 😃😍😎

Thank you 🤗 Hey Painting. I'm always dropping by for a peek at your work and getting inspiration from you. Have a super 2023 😃
I had this video playing away in the bg Paul, you've done such a brilliant job of making this video!! I swear I could just about smell the sea air when you played the B roll of the waves on the beach!! I think I'm missing the sea, it's been a few years since I've been to the beach!! Have a good one my friend!!😊Robbie
Hi Robbie - LOL I can just about smell the sea from where we live. I can't imagine being too far away from it to be honest. We enjoy walks along the coatal paths of the South Downs National Park. Problem is everywhere I look is another painting just waiting to be on a canvas. Looking forward to seeing what 2023 has in store for us both. Fingers crossed it will be a corker 😊😎
The orange on the rocks is BRILLIANT! Beautiful soft colors Paul! THANK you for sharing ❤👋

Wow, that's such a fantastic drawing, my friend. The sky and waves are so pretty in color and expression.I like it so much that I want to see it with my own eyes.

Wow! This is gorgeous! You're amazing. I'll try to get up the nerve to try this one. I don't think I could do it justice though.
I'm so jealous that you live near the ocean. I'm landlocked in the U.S.😕 If I lived near an ocean, I'd have to visit it daily.
Hi Amy - Your so sweet 🥰but I wasn't that good at anything to begin with. Some of my early seascapes would make anyone a bit sea sick LOL. So start somewhere. Just pick a section of the painting and start playing. Maybe a nice pastel sky and a flat calm sea with a rock and water line. Use this to test colours maybe. Then progress a little. Its all baby steps but I know you'll get there. And Yes, living by the sea is wonderful. I get withdrawl symptoms if I go too far inland 🤗🤗
@@PaulRansonArt I can do the sky, rocks, the eye of the wave and most of the water. It's just that darn foam on the waves😠 It troubles me. I hate failure so I'll keep trying until I can master it. Thank you for explaining it all so well in your tutorials, though. It really helps! I'm hoping to see some clips from your latest appearance on Create and Craft!
I have watched you from Phoenix Az for the last two years and this is my absolute favorite! Your composition, colors and tones are perfectly on point. Great job Paul and thank you for sharing!!!
Wow, thank you! I'm delighted to hear your enjoying my videos. I think I'll make some more in depth tutorials. Hopefully showing how to progress from Bob's wonderful style to the next level. Well, I'll try to progress 😀Happy New Year 🥰
Love the color combo in this one 😊. I believe you’ve outdone yourself with this beauty
Thank you so much 🙂Steph. I've wanted to spend a bit more time on a paiting for a while and just could'n't stop myself playing with the colours. Happy Painting and New Year 😍
Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I really struggled with it but I have learnt some techniques and have a picture that looks vaguely sea like so I am counting that as a win! Wish there was somewhere we could upload our pictures so you could tell me one thing I need to work on. Now I am going to try and find how to buy you a coffee
You are so welcome! I'm delighted to hear you have a 'seascape' and a win. Its a subject I've painted so many times and still see it differently each time. If you go to the 'About' section your'll find a link to my facebbook page where you can send me a photo. I'd love to see how your did and if I can offer any help. Thanks also for the offer of a coffee. Its a great way to support the channel and I spend every penny on paints and supplies. 😎
@@PaulRansonArt Obviously I am rubbish at this technology. I tried to put a message with the cups of coffee but it put the coffee in my husbands name and didn't send the message. It was just another thank you and to say how beautiful the golden waterfall painting is. I think I am going to do the one that teaches you how to use the Bob Ross palette knife next.
Fabulous Paul, love your colors. You just keep getting better all the time! 🌹
Thanks so much 😊Yovette. I think 2023 will be the year I spread my wings a little. As much as I enjoy recreating my versions of Bob's work its time to push the boundary a little. So stay tuned to see what I come up with. Have a super 2023 yourself. 🥰🥰 - Paul
@@PaulRansonArt The fun begins Paul when you do start to spread your wings. There is no end to the possibilities! 🤗🌹
I really love the colors you used on this it is beautiful.
Thank you so much Jesi for your kind comments. Its a painting I've had in my head to paint for a while. Who knows whats next. Hope to see you there soon. Happy New Year 😍😍
Thanks for video . I've been pretty unmotivated painting lately. I normally just paint the one crasher type seascapes ross style so this will definitely help.
Hi Stevie , I get dips in motivation too. But I think its quite normal to need some down time and a chance to recharge the batteries. As soon as you see somthing to spark your imagination you'll be back painting. I'd be delighted if my painting gives you that spark. Happy New Year. 🤗🤗- Paul
What an amazing tutorial, Paul! 🥰🤩The step by step process was incredible and the seascape turned out beautifully. I appreciate the color choices you used especially to create depth and add highlights. Loved the fingerpainting as well!
I think encouraging the use of brushes that have seen better days, is a great tip. I think sometimes were are quick to throw them out or maybe pass them down to our favorite youngster for more abuse. 😉
So delightful to watch! 💖
Hi Robyn - Thank you for your lovely comments. I'm a bit of a brush hoarder ( but I'm getting treatment for it LOL) My excuse is that I'm going to make a grand art installation from them. A sort of homage to the humble brush. I'll probably be found trapped under it one day. Yes I have a lot of brushes 🤣🤣 Happy New Year. Loving your channel too. 🥰
@@PaulRansonArt 😂 Please do not get trapped by your art!!! But, oh the story you could tell...
I am guilty of container collecting. My own form of recycling if you will. I always have some "use" or "repurpose" that seems grounds for keeping it. It was a little heartbreaking when I moved and had to purge quite a few. I realized that perhaps I didn't NEED so many. 🤷🏼♀

Paul!! Happy new year to you, this is a great piece, I actually sucked at doing waves but that was when I first started picking up my brushes, now I wanna give it a try and see if I can do it, here's to a much better 2023 😊👍
Hi Damo - give it a go and see what you can do. I found that onve I got the angles sorted out my waves looked more realistic. Then its just a case of playing with the details. I'm sure your up to it. Lets make 2023 our year 😃😃
what seascape video would you reccomend for a beginner to try?
Hi - my number one choice would be this one ua-cam.com/video/0vk_MDEIM18/v-deo.html Its one I think anyone can paint and get a descent result. I have lots more classic wave ones and a few with slightly more detail. But I try and make them all good for a beginner to try. Hope this helps 😃
Hi Paul, just starting out on my journey into oil painting and finding your videos incredibly resourceful, thank you very much.
A quick question as it's something simple I'm yet to get my head around. at 19:21, where you say you've cleaned your brush. How exactly are you cleaning it? Some Zest solution then wiping on a paper towel or is it more of a deep clean?
Are you using any buckets, or just a glass jar to dip the brush but nothing to scrub it?
Thanks for stopping by and the nice comments. Good question about brush cleaning. Most of the time I dry clean my brush. Usually on a strip of paper towel. This removes enough paint to free up the bristles for more paint. But now and then the brush will clog up and only a thorough clean will do. I've used Bob Ross odourless thinners in the past. Its absolutly fine for the hobby painter but as I wash brushes often I decided to look for something a little kinder to my skin. I now use Zest-it which is a lemon based cleaner. Top Tip: Don't be tempted to use white spirits unless your using regular household brushes. Artist quality brushes will soon loose their spring and grow brittle and you'll be replacing them too often. I keep my thinners in a small container with a wire grill to work the bristles over. I then beat them dry in an old kitchen bin with a wire rack that looks like a toast rack. Job done 😃
@@PaulRansonArt, thank you for the comprehensive response.
Ok makes sense, so dry clean whilst painting then a proper clean either at the end or once the brushes or clogged up.
Do you have any affiliate links to the cleaning grills? I’m guessing something similar to the Bob Ross cleaning bucket and grill for cleaning then a DIY solution with the toast rack for drying.
Much appreciated.
@@user-kp5xc5lj9v Your spot on with your comment. I use a Bob Ross cleaning grill and the Bob Ross beater rack. I use a freezer bag as a liner for the tiniiers pot and a tough rubble bag for the bin. Then when it comes to changing thinners I can empty the pot into another one and let the last of the old paint settle out then use it again. Once it starts to develop a slightly sour smell its time for some fresh thinners. I didn't include any affiliate links to these products as most folks find inventive way to make their own grills and racks. Usually an old oven grill or a simple stick in the bucket for a beater. Just make sure its got no sharp edges 😮😮
@@PaulRansonArt that’s great thank you very much.
Now I understand the process I know what I need to get setup.
I’ve seen about the freezer bags to help make the cleaning process more manageable long term.
Look forward to the next video.
I'm trying to find out what Bob Ross liquid clear is. can you help Paul just starting out and funds are tight great channel Paul I live in the UK and finding bob ross paint is difficult to find
Hi James - Bob Ross Liquid Clear is a product dreamed up by Bob and sold under his own brand. Its a 'secret formula' of course but linseed oil can be used as a substitute if used with care. Bob's was a nice slightly thickened product which needs to be scrubbed on very thinly. Linseed oil is much thinner and so needs to be applied even more sparingly and often dabbed off so its not too wet. With practice its a pretty good substitute and dries slowly. If you add a little titanium white over it you get a similar effect for liquid white. But obviously just a little more oily so again practice will be needed. Hope this helps. 😃
is there a alterative to the oval brush for trees prices are around 20 pounds
Hi James - well, maybe. But I couldn't possibly tell you to check out the paint brushes in Wickes and look for a Harris Signature synthetic brush 😉😉😍😍😎😎@@jameshodds8800
First Paul I would like to thank you for taking the time to reply to my question so many people on youtube DON'T. I've taken the plunge after watching the video again and bought the bob ross 1 inch brush and I'm pleased to say it's arrived already (it was the last one) in the listing Paul thankyou my friend James@@PaulRansonArt
Your welcome James😃😃 @@jameshodds8800
Just tried this one last night, fantastic job! Quick question. When I use the fan brush to apply the foam at the edge of the wave, I feel like I don't get enough white coming off the brush, or it starts to get muddy with the neighboring paints. I know from one of your videos your applying liquid white can be a huge cause, but I feel like the liquid white I applied was correct, any tips for avoiding this in the future? Thank you!
Hi Greg - first off, thank you so much for the 'coffee'. Your kind donation helps me buy more paint and supplies for the next tutorial so many thanks. Now for the question about adding foam. The main principal is that a thin paint will stock to a thick paint. Hence taking care to not over do the liquid white which makes the very first colours too thin and nothing sticks. Sounds like you have that sorted. But subsequent layers need to be slightly thinner than th last so they stick. I use very little paint for my backgrounds. The sea is really scrubbed on thin so any highlights should stick quite well. With one exception. If your using Bob Ross Titanium white the its deliberately thick so you can paint a mountain and make the paint break. But it might need a dab of liquid white to thin it. Then it should stick. Its a matter of feel sometimes and that comes with lots of practice. And yes, even I mix mud sometimes so your not alone. Hope my rambling answer gives you a few pointers - Paul 😎😎
It very much does, thank you!@@PaulRansonArt
I tried a few more highlights in practice the other night, and think it may be the paint I am using as well... I am relatively new so haven't splurged on the Bob Ross oil paints yet, and the dark base does not feel as thick as it should. I'll keep playing with the liquid white as well to make sure its perfect. I am going to try campfire next, and may lay down the dark base and let it dry, coming back to do the highlights later to prevent muddying, until I buy the better quality paints. Does that sound like a reasonable idea? (Future video idea possibly, difference between cheap oil paint and better quality paint...) Thank you!@@PaulRansonArt
Yes, the thickness / quality of the oil paints will make a huge difference to how well they work. BUT not even Bob Ross paint is immune from being too oily sometimes! One quick way to stiffen up the dark colours is to put them on a piece of cardboard for a while and let it soak up some of the oil. You'll see a dark ring forming after a few minuets. Then try again. It will take some experimenting but its worth a try rather than waste paint. Just paint a small sample piece to test your mixtures. Best wishes Paul
I'll definitely give it a try!@@PaulRansonArt

Hi Paul I've bought some Bob Ross liquid white from Amazon and it seems very runny not sure if I've bought a fake product it drips of my knife, any advice would be much appreciated
Hi Peter - Liquid white is a very soft oiley paint so I'm not surprised its thinner that you might have expected. One thing to ensure is that its well mixed because it can seperate in the can. I use a long palette knife and get right to the bottom of the can. Then give it a good stir until your sure its thoroughly mixed. It should be like whipped cream. On my videos I use a small air tight container to save having to do this every time I use Liquid White as its a smaller amount. Another tip. Seal the can well ( the lids can be tricky to get on fully ). I pop my container in the freezer ( yes thats right ). This will cause the paint to stiffen but not dry out. Allow to come upto room temperature before using. Hope this helps. Here's a video showing how to test you canvas for coverage just in case ua-cam.com/video/6n7tj4gVO0A/v-deo.html
Great thanks for the advice I will give that a go and pinch a small tub when the mrs ain’t looking 😂
I have watched you from Algeria,I have one question it seems too easy watching you but when I start painting I use 3layers and then I ruin my painting!what do u advise me pls?greetings from algierd
Hello Khadija - I read your comment carefully Are you on Facebook too? There's a wonderful artist there with the same name. Is that you? If so then you have nothing to worry about. Adding wet layers can sometimes lead to a painting getting too overworked. I do it and so will many others. On more complex paintings like the seascape I try and get the main blocks of the painting completed whilst still wet. So a simple sky and the seascape blocked in. I try and get the eye of the wave done also as its a transparent effect and is more easily completed on a wet canvas. The added detail like rocks, surf and the glow in the sky are added a day or two later. I hope my explanation is understandable. Love to Algeria - Paul
