    For 1912, that pocket camera actually impressed me. You'd think all cameras from back then would be all big/bulky, but the fact that they had something like that in 1912 is so cool, seems like something that'd be made today.

    It’s amazing how much one can learn from the Titanic over the years. I’ve grown up with Titanic since 2nd grade. Now I’m an adult. It was my gateway to maritime history, model building, knowledge of ships, Hollywood history and classic cinema, and TV, drawing and art(Ken Marschall) and computer games (Honor and Glory)and technology, gilded age history, Newport Mansions (Astor’s) etc. Everything seems to connect back to Titanic in some way. Anyone else feel this?

    When the '97 Film came out, it was also along side the Broadway Film Titanic. I was there and saw it at the Theater in NYC. There were a few items made as set pieces that Im curious if anyone ever donated to you:
    1. Boarding Ramp with the Name Titanic on the side
    2. During the end of the Play.. I think I was a disaster. I practically cried from the onset of the Opening to the Ending. I flat out sobbed when I saw the Cart used in the Smoking Room Scenes drifting away on its own. They used blankets towards the end to highlight who made it onto the Carpathia. I was curious if anyone ever passed one onto you guys?
    P.S
    When you mentioned the Staircase woodwork, I think my blood temp dropped. I cant even imagine where half of those items from the Olympic are today.
    Thank you.

    That's awesome. I'd love to fix up a house in that Olympic class style. It would most likely be prohibitively expensive to replicate, but that paneling and the old light fixtures and those patterned carpets and all would be a pretty interesting style that you don't really see anymore and make your place stand out a bit. Just my thoughts anyway. And I lol'ed at 7:50. Looking at all the antique ship artifacts and then BB-8 just comes out of nowhere. Lol.

    I sooo wish that they would make ships more like these because I think that they have the perfect balance between hotel and ship. Meaning you feel like you are on a ship the cruise liners of today you don't really get to see that unless you happen to go threw some very bad weather which is possible but not as likely since they have weather systems installed on the deck. So it's almost like just going to a hotel then a ship you only really see the water when you look out and that's it.

    I just finished reading about the Gimbells “portable” lamp. There is a nice section on it in the book “Titanic: The Ship Magnificent” (2008, 2012, The History Press). This is a massive, two volume work that was written by Bruce Beveridge and 4 other Titanic experts that comprehensively goes into detail about pretty much every phase of the ship’s construction. It’s a must-have for anyone interested in the ship’s mechanics and furnishings, but might be a bit daunting for anyone who’s only just starting to learn about Titanic, simply because it’s so much to read! The section about the lamp is in Volume One, near the end of Chapter 17, which talks about the ship’s electrical fittings. I’m sure that Tom, Matt and the Honor and Glory crew are familiar with the book, maybe even used some of it’s info to help create the game.

      I bought my lead Titanic souvenir in a gift shop at the Titanic Artifact Exhibition, back when it was at the Tropicana hotel in Las Vegas. I think it was 2005 when I got it. The Exhibition has since moved to the Luxor hotel in that same city, but they don’t sell those tiny lead paperweights anymore. I don’t think it has any connections with the ship itself, it’s just something that they made to sell. Hope this helps.

    Ever since it was determined that Titanic's first class dining saloon was floored with linoleum (instead of the carpet that was manufactured for it) I've always been puzzled as to the reason. Hearing that the cabin corridors were tiled as well...would they have used carpet runners? Having such open, expansive spaces, with a solid surface flooring...they'd have been echo chambers. You'd think the saloon and corridors would require sound dampening to create a more serene atmosphere.

    • @mattc2094
      @mattc2094 6 років тому +1

      Very interesting Tim. I was quite puzzled when l learnt that titanic had linoleum. Its such a cheap material these days and I wonder if it felt soft to walk on onboard the titanic.

    • @timbaker1428
      @timbaker1428 6 років тому

      Matthew Chaban it's been said that linoleum was more expensive than marble, at that time. It was a brand new invention. It also wasn't the same type of thin, cheap vinyl as you'd think of today.

    • @matthewdewinkeleer3384
      @matthewdewinkeleer3384 6 років тому +1

      There were no carpet runners in the corridors. This was noted by a Cunard line designer when he sailed on Olympic in 1911 and took many extensive notes (which were used in the design of Aquitania.)

    What laws prevent a private person from owning salvage from the wreck? It's hard to reinforce them if they are some silent albeit international agreement and I've never heard of any such law here in Sweden.
    I do know that you can be prosecuted and jailed in Estonia, Finland and Sweden for diving to M/S Estonia and violating "griftefriden" (Swedish, meaning "peace of the grave"; i.e. disturbing a grave, robbing it or mishandling a corpse), but how does that work on the Titanic wreck site?

      Cunard for a speedy return to New York, White Star Line for a relaxing trip to England! Cunard first class, White Star Second Class

    If only the people of the 30s had only known how valuable Olympic would become in the 1990-2000s, i bet they would have kept it as a museum. If Olympic was around today i bet people would try to take a piece of the ship with them.

    That rule of not being able to own something from the wreck is so annoying. I really wanted a first class plate from the dining room.

    It would be funny if there lying about the coal BTW just played the game last night the demo 3 it's really interesting and fantastic it's funny when I look at the titanic and I went wait is that the size I thought she would be bigger but tbh it is a 1912 ship

    Why is it illegal to own pieces recovered from the wreck? It is located on the high seas and I would expect admiralty law to apply. Is that not so?

    Isnt there someone who technically owns the "salvage rights" to Titanic? Maybe the modern day continuation of Cunard because they merged with white star and own everything else white star had rights to?

      P77777777 unless something has changed. RMS Titanic, Inc owns salvage rights to the vessel

    "... fold it right up and put it in your breast pocket of your vest."
    Tom, vests don't have breast pockets! I assume the camera goes in the same vest pocket that a pocket watch would otherwise go in?

      RMS Gigantic my vintage vests have breast pockets, and the old advertisements I saw show a vest breast pocket.

      Huh, I was always under the impression that it was a fashion faux pas, only attempted on extremely cheap modern vests explicitly not meant to be worn with a suit.

      War Grave, i think since she was sunk in wartime under the the Military's control.
      I do think things have been taken from Britannic but only for museum.

      There is nothing to take. No tiles, figurines, wood was all taken before she sank etc
