most people don't realize that his next start he was perfect through 6
What even MORE people don't realize is that as a result of going perfect through 6 that next game vs. MIN, he broke none other than then team mate Bobby Jenk's major league record of consecutive batters retired
@@TheVoiceOfResin3451 Yep, he retired 45 straight at one point. Too bad he (Buerhle) didn't duplicate what David Wells did-toss a perfect game against the Twinkies. Buehrle would have made history by tossing back-to-back perfect games, something that not even Johnny Vander Meer accomplished.
Yep. At the old Metrodome against the playoff contending Twins with the AL MVP in that lineup.
Yea, leading up to them is game, and after, he was flirting with history.
Now I wanna see Philip ungers. I remember watching that game live. No one was even talking to him on the bench. He would go to the bench wrap his arm and aait
Buehrle was ahead of his time with the pitch clock
Literally, lol😂
Wise was on the bench for 8 full innings. Then, when his name is called in the 9th he makes one of the most incredible plays in MLB history. He definitely doesn’t get enough credit for this moment.
It blows my mind how he didn’t step a foot on the field until the 9th inning and immediately makes one of the greatest catches of all time. Unbelievable
At "Guaranteed Rate Field" he does at least has a memento on the outfield wall.
well he kind of does get enough praise, the game commentators called it the best play they've ever seen in the circumstances. That's pretty high praise. what else constitutes "enough praise". fact is, it is the best play i've ever seen in such a game and guessing most think likewise but the game does belong to buehrle for his 9 innings performance!
UnderratedOmen3376-No he doesn't.
He gets TONS of credit. People will ALWAYS talk about that catch
The AMAZING catch by Wise, the legendary call by Hawk, probably the best perfect game in MLB history! Definitely proud to be a life long Sox fan!
Best perfect game in MLB history was Koufax winning 1-0, striking out the last 6 men he faced, and the opposing pitcher tossing a one-hitter with one walk and an unearned run.
53 men came to the plate for both teams. 1 hit. 1 walk. Combined.
The best perfect game in MLB history would probably be Don Larsen's in the World Series. Not to take anything away from this one, but there was more at stake for Don Larsen.
Few non-White Sox fans enjoy "The Hawk"(always Hawk #2 from Chicago). I prefer to mute him when watching Sox highlights. Well at least he's barely not John Sterling.
And thats why baseball is the greatest of all sports
If you went to the restroom you'd miss three innings with Buehrle on the mound, SHEEEEESH!!
What's lost in this is the "magical cure" for pace of play. That second at-bat, that went to a full count, took 56 seconds. I've seen games with Sergio Romo and Pedro Baez taking that much time to throw fewer than 2 pitches. And that's when the bases are EMPTY.
And Buehrle is number 56... coincidence? I think not
@@davidmcdermott7861 And the home plate umpire, Eric Cooper, wore number 56...coincidence? I think not
@@large_crab And appropriately, the White Sox's RHE was 5 6 0.
@@mrmacross Coincidence????? I THINK NOT
An old baseball adage is that when you first check into the game defensively, the ball will somehow find it's way to you immediately...
And Wise makes one of the greatest catches in the history of baseball.
Hawk with the perfect call and call as well
Incredible and Amazing Called by Ken Harrelson
The Hawk calling this is GOLD
*HISTORY!!*
The only Sox game I ever went to was the day before this. I’m not complaining because it was a 1-run game that came down to the last pitch. It was also the only game I have ever seen with an inside the park home run.
2:50 wow man the balls to throw a changeup on 3-2 with a perfect game going....and it's a FILTHY one too..amazing
one of the most electric 9th innings ive ever seen. one of the best catches ive ever seen
I remember I was at work and just before the ninth inning a work colleague who was a cubs fan came up to me and my manager and said he you two need to go to the break room Mark Buehrle is about to throw a perfect game, I’ll cover you, I got back there just before Wise made the catch
Beautiful
ALLLEEEEEEXXXXXXXEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIII..............YES! YES! YES! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! HISTORY!!!!!!!!!
Simply said I am so glad they retired Mark Buehrle's number! What he has done as a pitcher for the White Sox is quite amazing.
If the HOF wasn’t so damn picky with pitchers Buehrle should be there at some point.
He deals so fast. God I miss him
The catch that saved the perfect game.
Wise!!
Great game. I just wonder who was Hawk's "Pick-to-click". :)
I wish all pitchers worked as quickly as Mark did.
Kudos to Hawk for not saying a word on the last AB.
Demerit to Hawk for calling Sarah Kustok "honey."
I wonder how much of Alexei's heart was in his throat as that groundball bounded in his direction?
Mustve felt like an eternity AND the blink of an eye at the same time.
If I was a fielder and the last out of a perfect game was rolling/flying in my direction, Id faint of a nervous breakdown.
Alexei came through, and the throw was on the money.
Thank God, for Buehrle, and all us baseball fans.
Epic !! GO SOX !!!
I’ve cleaned this dudes house before and got to meet him. I didn’t know who he was at the time 😅
Buerlhe is the best pitcher in white Sox history.
he's there with Billy Pierce, Ed Cicotte and Wilbur Wood in terms of numbers. He has the no-no and perfect-o as well.
1:20
If I was the manager I would’ve taken out Buherle after the first out. He looked tired and seemed like he needed rest.
speedrun bb
Good job honey
2:56 Everyone on November 1st, 2020
My goodness I forgot how quickly buehrle worked
It's refreshing to watch. I thought they were editing it at first lol
@@sportsjefe Man that's the dream huh
@@sportsjefe Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series was played in 2:06, and he threw 97 pitches, 70 for strikes.
An unlikely candidate (Phil Humber) would pitch the White Sox's next perfect game-a 4-0 Sox win over the Seattle Mariners on April 21, 2012, tying the Sox with the New York Yankees for most in baseball history.
I watched this game in full, and only like 20% was when the Rays were batting it felt he was so fast.
Buehrle owed Wise drinks that night lol
He actually got him a bottle of wine
he owed him a lot more than drinks
@@scottsokachitch , he should have offered up a night with his wife.
They probably had some "on the down low" happenings. #NOHOMO

Wise's catch was one of the best and most important catches in MLB history
Probably top 3 catch in MLB History
BEN PLAYSS important? no. best? absolutely.
"Under the circumstance one of the greatest catches i have ever seen in my 50 years"
How about one the most greatest calls by a manger putting Wise out there
Important? Hardly.
Baseball would be a much more popular sport if all pitchers worked as quickly as buehrle. Makes the game so much easier to watch.
I think that the relative impenetrability of watching baseball keeps the sport alive. The international popularity of basketball tarnished the spirit of the sport.
I used to plan my delivered meals around Buehrle starts --I'd phone in the order right after the national anthem, and my doorbell would ring during the postgame show
Amen brother - I don't like a pitch clock but still all in favor of the ump calling a ball due to the delay on the mound
Indeed...
Agreed. All these pace of play nonsense that changes the rules...
Only need one, call it the MB rule...make all pitchers follow that as a guideline on how to work/pitch a game with efficiency, remind them an alert defense is a better defense, get these guys out quickly, go bat and score some runs. MERCY, YESSS!
In every no-hitter or perfect game, there is typically at least one outstanding defensive play somewhere along the way to keep it alive. That catch by Wise was one of the best ever. Great that the Soc honored it by denoting the spot on the outfield wall where Wise went over to reel "the catch" in
As I remember, there was no spectacular defensive play in Mariners' perfect game, just Felix Hernandez's total domination with 12 K's, 2 or 3 pop-ups and routine ground balls.
Galarraga had Austin Jackson
How many other players have had one of their plays permanently etched onto a major-league ballfield? I'd take that over a statue.
@@felixmendelssohn991 Mickey Mantle made an amazing catch off Brooklyn's Gil Hodges to save Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series, a drive that would've been a home run at Ebbets Field. Even though it didn't save a perfect game in the 7th game of the 1955 World Series, Sandy Amoros made an amazing catch off New York's Yogi Berra to preserve Johnny Podres shutout, giving the Dodgers their first and only World Series title while based in Brooklyn.
@@griffithchung9377 it’s gone now
RIP Eric Cooper, was the umpire behind the plate of Buehrle's perfect game and also no hitter
Eric Coopers patch number was 56 same as Mark Buehrle.
Not a White Sox fan, but this is one of the best games ever called by any announcer. My favorite part is that Hawk is completely silent during the final at bat until the ground ball, just to let the magnitude of the moment sink in. And of course, his call of the final out is perfect.
Say what you will about Hawk. But I’d be lying if I said he wasn’t brilliant calling this game.
I'm a Chicago native who shares your view of Hawk. It's to his great credit, I suppose, that I didn't even notice his silence during the final at-bat, so thanks very much for pointing that out.
Totally agree. Hawk is way too much of a homer, but in this situation he was perfect!
Ditto. Perfect call from a guy who gets a lot of flak for being a homer. In this case he was entitled, tremendous call.
Call your sons, call your daughters, call your friends, call your neighbours, Mark Buehrle has a perfect game into the 9th
Mark Buehrle. The consummate professional. He knew how to pitch and respected the game. No frills. Would do anything to help his team win - no questions asked. The game needs more like him.
Ted Karr--- Spot On Statement....Mark was one of those players that didn't Showboat or Grandstand.....He got Paid to Play and He Delivered The Goods. Salute Ted
Yes, the game needs more guys who are uber consistent throwing 85 for 200 innings a year.
Ted Karr
Balk
cjr1881 Bruh shut up
Miss him in Toronto. Was a pleasure to watch him work. Jays fans miss a lot of the good pitching staff from 213-15 Lol.
That catch by Wise is no question a top 10 of all time catch given the circumstances
I think 2:43 to 2:55 shows you why Buehrle was such an effective pitcher despite not having high 90s heat. After falling behind 3-1, and arguably getting squeezed on the 3rd ball call he spots a cutter on the corner at 89 mph, then an 82 mph change out of the same arm angle in the same location. Filthy as it comes imo. Also, both pitches thrown within 11 seconds of one another. I really hope he gets into the hall, as there won't be too many guys like him in the future
I don't think he'll get into the HOF, but you're right when you say there won't be too many more like him.
He also had a nasty pick off move. In his first no hitter 2 years before this, his only base runner was a walk to Sammy Sosa, who he promptly picked off first base!
Fantastic comment. Couldn't have said it any better.
He's borderline HOF. I sincerely hope he gets in.
@@JasonEmerson711 I don't think he has enough of the traditional stats or advanced stats that voters like. He's probably below the Hall standard, but he wouldn't be the worst starting pitcher. He's got 60 WAR, which would be better than about 25 starting pitchers in the Hall. Having a WS ring and two no-hitters will help his cause, since only 25 pitchers have thrown multiple no-nos.
If he got in, it'd probably wouldn't be through the standard BBWAA ballot, but rather the Eras Committee, like how Harold Baines got in.
The HOF became irrelevant 30 years ago. It means absolutely nothing now because of the hoity toity better than you sportswriters took over. I’m a diehard Cubs fan and in my life he was one of the best pitchers in the city and you couldn’t help but love him.
Hawk Harrelson is the blue print for an announcer of a specific team. Loved that team. Cared about his guys. Made it important. It was like his family down there on the field. What a broadcaster. He and guys like Harry Kalas, etc, were parts of their clubs. Absolute legends.
Yep, I really miss listening to the Hawk! Mercy!
Why have I never seen that Dewayne Wise catch in compilations?
meanwhile I can't remember how many time I have seen that play in compilations.
East coast bias
Bc greatness is known only to few
because the chicago white sox dont exist to a lot of people
Because he wasn't on the cubs
I am not a big Hawk fan, but his call of the 9th inning was perfect. The call of the catch; “he gone!”; silence during the last batter; “Alexeeeeiii…”; “yes, yes, yes, HISTORY!!!” Could not have done it better.
I still get goosebumps when he says "ONE TO GO!!"
Still tear up watching this. Hawks emotions bring back chills.
Not even a Sox fan, and I agree. The epitome of what a hometown announcer should be. Loved and cared about his team, his guys. Made this moment great and did it by saying the fewest and most important words possible. Beautiful stuff.
dammit nancy, there's no crying in baseball
"YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!"
HISTORY
Such a bad call lol
@@ziggle5000 Hawk was known for being very enthusiastically bad. He's like if Joe Buck emoted
Dwayne Wise should have a special tribute in the hall of fame. Most clutch catch probably ever.
MLB The Show 19 has these moment type things, they the Cubs winning the world series👎, Willie Mays' WHOLE CAREER, and a couple others. SOMEHOW THOUGH THERE ISNT A "BUEHRLES PERFECT GAME" Like you got a MLB legends whole career so why cant you have the ninth inning of this game where you can pitch as Buehrle and then make "the catch" and the final play.
I still to this day love that Hawk stayed silent during the final hitter until the groundball to Alexei. It was like he was soaking it all in. Just awesome and more announcers should do it
I watched this live. Still the best catch I've ever seen and will ever see given the moment
I have to comment again. I have been a baseball fan for a long time. I watch this clip regularly because it is my hands down favorite MLB moment. Nothing better than a perfect game, in all of sport.
this really highlights what a team achievement a perfect game is. even the leadership putting Wise in centerfield; it’s all a part of it. i love baseball for this
People refer to Willie Mays’ routine over the shoulder catch as “the catch”. Or Dwight Clark for the Niners vs the Cowboys.
For me D. Wise’s catch in this ball game trumps those both. I Miss Ozzie, I Miss Buehrle, I Miss that team. Just glad I was alive to see it even if I was 10-11 yrs old at the time
Willie Mays' catch was definitely not routine
Only player in MLB history to have 3 games of 27 up and 27 down.
Remember, he didn't even follow his morning ritual for a start that morning. He forgot his energy drink.
And subsequently texted his wife to tell her it was going to be a bad day lol
The crowd going silent before Wise's catch was the perfect build-up.
Absolutely!!!
"MERCY" is the call on the Dwayne Wise catch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The hero was the manager, making that defensive change.
I was there, this is one of the best memories of my entire life.
There is (or at least was) some brief footage of the Wise catch from someone's cell phone in the upper deck along the left field line. It's amazing to hear "Oh no!" so loudly from many of the fans nearby, only to have that replaced by screams of joy a second later.
I cant believe it is more than 10 years. I feel it was yesterday
I want in my job a partner like Wise!!!!
Always one great defensive play in every no hitter or perfect game!
No such play in David Wells' and Felix Hernandez's perfect games.
Felix Mendelssohn Brendan Ryan made a couple great plays in Felix’s game
Felix Mendelssohn even just making a play is hard knowing if you screw up everyone’s gonna be on you
I was at Phil Humber's perfect game after having totally missed this one two and a half years prior. No crazy catches in that one despite Humber having been a total scrub.
Here’s an amazing trivia tidbit about Mark Buerhle: only pitcher to pitch to minimum 27 batters three times. Perfect game, one hitter-runner erased on double play, two hitter-runner erased on double play, runner picked off.
I had no idea the new manager of our Giants, Gabe Kapler, was a part of the Rays in this historic game. Something something, learn something new every day.
I was there and man it was so loud. I couldn't even hear my friend and she was sitting next to me. I got his autograph after the game. And he was really nice.
I a Cubs fan and this gives me chills. I always liked Buehrle
When the 2nd out call is the best call. He GONEEEEEEEEEEE 1 to go.
Totally agree. Super pumped after that
I was there. Unreal. A kid born today, could go to every home game in his life and may not ever see this. I feel so lucky to have been there.
Same!
I fast forward 10 seconds and buehrle is already throwing the next pitch
The Dewayne Wise defensive change though...
Wow, watching that Dewayne Wise catch still gives me the same goosebumps as watching it live. Lifelong sox fan but was only 4 years old for the 05 World Series so I don’t remember it, but at least I got to see this game live
Greatest Sox pitcher in the 21 century
ALEXEI!! YESSS!! YESSS!!
One of the many reasons why baseball is such a magical sport - random Thursday day game in the south side of Chi-town and history just happens out of the blue. And the way a perfect game slowly builds over the course of nine innings, not much can rival that drama.
great comment!!!
@@skipwin9895 thank you!
WISE SAVED THAT PERFECT GAME, THE GREATEST PLAY IVE NEVER SEEN
I've never understood why Hawk was so berated for being a homer. Was it his really his homerism that people disliked about Hawk or was it his tendency to drop his professionalism and be real? Hawk was a real embodiment of love of baseball. Watching a game with him in the booth was like sitting in the dugout with a guy who played the game and understood it. Baseball is a GAME, it's a fun game. It's not fun if there's no emotion involved. I get bored to tears with ESPN commentators like Karl Ravech who never played the game and are so afraid of causing any controversy that they default to the most dry, risk-free comments. Hawk was a man who respected the game and hated when people tried to take the honesty and fun out of it. Baseball can be interpreted and reacted to in many ways, but I will always respect The Hawk's view of it because he was a competitive and spirited individual who was also a showman who loved the game and wanted the best for it.
"Thanks Sarah, nice job honey" Tee Hee...........
LOL.
Yikes that didn't age well at all.
I hadn't spoken to my sister in a while but she called me during this game and asked me, "Are you watching the Sox game?" I replied, "No, why?" She said, "Buehrle's pitching a perfect game in the 8th!"
I'm new to baseball but one thing i notice here that regards all of sport.
Everyone is celebrating together. Race or gender or sexual orientation are irrelevant, no one is even thinking about it.
Beware of politics in sport. It has the potential to ruin what sport does so fantastically - unite people.
I was incredibly fortunate to unexpectedly have that day off of work and be able to attend that game. My seat was out in the center field section near where Wise made the catch- in fact, I couldn't see the catch as it was made with several rows of fans standing in anticipation in front of me. Totally had to go with the silence and the subsequent roar to confirm the incredible catch was made. As the chance of a perfect game grew, every pitch was pure tension, every time Buehrle got behind a hitter was utter suspense. The greatest live sports moment of my life.
Can confirm. I was in the same section as you’re describing. I don’t think we really knew into the 5th or 6th inning. Man that place was electric. And bonus for being on my birthday.
The best part was the games was over in 45 minutes lol. Love the tempo he pitched; so old school... the way it's supposed to be.
I know it's practically muscle memory for broadcasters by this point, but something about "Kapler 0-for-2" in the 9th inning of a perfect game cracks me up. It's a perfect game--everybody is 0-for-2!
Wise with the perfect game, shutout and no hitter save
There's really no equal in sports to witnessing a perfect game end. I'm lucky to witness David Wells and this on TV live
Reporters these days kill me. Everything is "How do you feel" What are your emotions... my God ask something better
nobody mentions that Wise was playing very shallow on purpose to take away a cheap single to spoil the perfect game, he really had to run a very long way at full speed while tracking that ball, jumping at the wall was the easy part. wow
Buerle probably had the lowest key pretty damn good career.
This was a great game. I forgot exactly how fast Mark pitched. He just got the ball and threw it. That was definitely part of his success since his fastball was never overpowering. He was a PITCHER!
Look how fast he’s working. What a beauty
1st video with Hawk that I can stand. Way to be Buehrle, from a Jays fan.
These announcers did a great job capturing the emotion of the moment. Not even a white Sox fan and I got caught up in this
"Nice job, honey." 😂
That would never fly today.
I remember watching this game in my Southside house… I about lost it when he made that catch
This was on Comcast Sportsnet Chicago. Both were at home. Nice look at Sarah K. And every TV station from Channel 7,9, 32, 2 and 5.
Under the circumstances one of the greatest catches I have ever seen, hawk. You got that right brother!
