Threw a perfect game and spent his entire interview talking about how great his catcher played. Be like Randy Johnson.
catcher does work with the pitcher, so. I imagine In throwing a perfect game, maybe it's a hint that catcher is doing a lot too, or maybe he just being modest.

I was a catcher, and what you are there for is to help yhe pitcher get guys out.
Yr looking at where the batter sets up, is he looking inside or outside, is he late on the fastball, cant wait back for offspeed?
The catcher needs to know the hitters, how to get them out, but also see whats happening in front of you.
In this game, atlanta would have had some fastball hitters. The scouting on them may be - dont throw fastballs up to Eddie Perez, you must throw everything down..... eddie knows that you know this.
But if you see Randy blowing his fastball past everyone, no one is getting near it, youd call it because of what you are seeing.
As a catcher, what gives you most enjoyment is the game of chess against the hitters - getting them out.
If they run, throw them out.
Hitting is secondary, a bonus - the outfielders and corner infielders can do that.
Whos more valuable to a team?
Yadier Molina or Gary Sanchez?
Id go with Molina. There are only a handful of gold glove catchers, but lots of people can hit homeruns.

They won't be allowed to pitch enough innings anymore. You need innings and experience to be this great, The coddled young generation of pitchers won't be allowed to get that great. So sad...

It's between him and maybe Lefty Grove for best LHP ever. The dominance of Koufax times the longevity of Spahn. And, like Grove, he put up his ridiculous stats during an extreme offensive era.
@randy johnson wasn't closer... Actually it was higher. Mounds were set at 10 inches after Bob Gibson's 1.12 ERA season in 1968, before they could ride as much as 15 inches.
He's done all the major rare things, no hitter, perfect game, immaculate inning, 20 strikeout game, winning a world series, and the only pitcher to kill a bird in flight. That's not all his accomplishments but the really rare ones

True fans of the sport. Cheering for the opposite team when something amazing is happening.
Not too mention they were all on their feet in the 9th
one of many reasons why baseball is the only sport I really care about. I'm not saying Americans do the same for other sports, but the MLB fan base overall has exponentially way more appreciative, true sportsman fans that show respect where it's due, no matter what player or team.
But at the same time you're cheering for your team to prevent it and win.

yeah, it's one of those things where if a guy reaches the 7th-8th inning with a PERFECT game going, you start to root for them... even at the expense of your own team, that's just history being made

To be fair, all fans of any team are baseball fans. Any baseball fan would love to watch one of these in person. I think a majority of fanbases would react in a similar way

Atlanta is one of the great franchises. Always classy, even the fans are good. Still great seeing them congratulate them.
Teams do that if they are on the wrong end of a pg or nh. Yankees sent cases of champagbe to the Astros years back when they were combine no hit.

I love how Randy threw all of the praise towards his catcher during the press conference. He throws a perfect game and all he's thinking about is his teammates. Today's players should take notes.
Phil Michaels yeah, but Randy was smart enough to know and humble enough to admit the catcher has to be on his game too in order to pull off a perfect game. And in this game the defense did make some awesome plays.

Crazy to hear a home crowd erupt in excitement when their own batter strikes out
I'm glad we're actually normal people in the baseball world. Even when opposing teams and players are fairly playing the game doing something phenomenal, everyone can appreciate the moment. To show respect like that and savor the moment helps make it last forever, gives everyone an amazing feeling to witness such history no matter which team you were rooting for. Something many NFL and NBA fans won't ever understand.

Robby Hammock's reaction compared to Randy's at the final out is just timeless. Robby looks like a kid on Christmas morning and ol' Randy looks like he just bumped into a friend at the local bar. 😂

Seeing his catcher who was young enough to be his son out there jumping like a maniac, sharing that moment across a generation and position, finally getting a perfect game, man. That cracked em.
Love the reaction by both Johnson and Hammock (the catcher) at the end. Johnson was always a serious guy but he was notoriously intense during the days he pitched.
Even after the final out, you could see Johnson momentarily reach out to shake Hammock's hand, in the typical business-like way he always did after a win. But Hammock was so excited, jumping up and down like a little kid, that even Johnson couldnt help but break out a huge smile of his own.
I remember Randy in an interview afterwards saying it was Hammock who was the happiest guy on the team. And he was so touched, he bought his catcher an engraved rolex to commemorate the day, and to say thank you.

An All Time Wholesome moment in Sports.
Johnson tried his hardest not too show too much emotion but once he saw his catcher jumping up and down like a kid on Christmas morning, he was all smiles.

As a Braves fan I was rooting against him until the 6th inning. After that I was rooting for the Big Unit and perfection. One of the most dominant performances I have ever seen.
A no-hitter is Amazing. But a perfect-game means you didn't pitch around anybody or let any hitter get away from you. It is so rare... So incredible... Such a thing of beauty to watch and appreciate.
Not to mention the pressure on the defense to not make an error.
The catcher jumping up and down like a crazy man is the best.
I'm so glad this man is still a member of the Diamondbacks organization.. Such a quiet, nice, humble guy

The thing that gets me is that during the whole 9th inning you can tell he's tired but it didn't matter. He was pouring sweat the whole time and taking deep breaths between every pitch and they still went 3 up 3 down

Always loved watching Johnson pitch. He is the most dominant left handed to ever pitch in my eyes. He was always in the zone. The all-star commercial he did years ago was hilarious too. It’s a must watch.

I can remember around the 8th inning all braves fans started cheering him on. I was amazed and was cheering too even though I’m a braves fan.
I'll never forget watching Jose Jimenez and Randy Johnsons dueling each other, and Jose unlikely out pitching him and getting the no hitter. Most have seen this game but the whole game of Jimenez and Johnson's was remarkable as each pitched the whole game.
Randy Johnson's perfect game at age 40 = George Foreman's Heavyweight Championship at age 45 (until 48) = Michael Phelp's 23 Olympic Gold Medals = Chick Hearn's 3,338 consecutive NBA broadcast without missing a game for 36 years until age 84.
