David Wells was a bulldog. A good old fashioned ballplayer. I thank him for the time he spent in Toronto giving us all he did winning a World Series and later in his career winning 20 games. He was at .600 winning % for his career and even better in the postseason. A winner and probably at times underappreciated.
I'm not a Yankee fan but hot damn this was one dominating performance by Wells. No wonder the Yankees were so good in the 90s. Awesome perfect game here.
Johnathan Cross old stadium had so much more electricity, the fans were more into games no matter what, this new stadium is an overpriced piece of garbage and most of the fans are boring corporate people
I gave my son a baseball, signed by David, from the game. He was like, who's David Wells? I told him I'd hang onto it until he figured it out. One day he came to me and said I want that ball I watched the whole 27 outs. LOL
I got to watch the 03 Yankees play the mariners at Yankee Stadium. Only MLB game i've ever seen in person, I still love baseball for some unknown reason....I think this is it, just like with the Kerry Wood 20 strikeout game on a miserable wet day in Chicago. Just a random afternoon game and something magical can happen.
Love this guy's will. Grew up an O's fan and lost 2 faves to the Bombers (Reggie and Dave). You'll note Wells is wearing "33" as his request to wear "3" was strangely denied :)
I known Dave since we played Little League back in 72-73. Even then he had that big curve, put could break a pane of glass with his fastball. That all changed as he got older, his fastball was 97 MPH his senior year in High School.
Saw an interview where they asked him “what makes you an athlete since you don’t run or lift much?” His answer was “Well I’m really flexible.” Makes sense I suppose.
I just remember how exciting this was. I was a young mother with a boy that was only 8 at the time, his grandpa was a big ultimate Yankee fan, this was the ultimate exciting moment.
That 98 team was so much fun. They bulldozed over everyone. I can't believe it's 20 years ago already. This current Yankee team has the makings of those late 90's teams, just need some more pitching. Let's go Yankees!!
Pretty cool getting a Perfect Game and a WS title in the same season, and then the Yanks do it back to back years. Must have been fun to watch the games all season long.
Was there on May 17, 1998. Was so young, didn't even know what a perfect game was at the time. Nobody even realized it until the 7th/8th inning what was going on. Amazing times. Yankee Dynasty.
My first game I ever attended was when David Wells stuck out 16 Oakland A batters. It was also the last game Mark McGwire ever played in an Athletic uniform before being trade to St.Louis
What’s funny about this is that he spent the night before drinking and partying with SNL members, didn’t brush his teeth or shower, and slept for 2-3 hours before this game.
As a Yankee fan, what a memory. Loved that late 90s team…just a great combo of personality, talent, guts, etc. They were never out of a game… As a baseball fan, I miss real baseball. Today’s game with nothing but strikeouts and launch angles and base running blunders and starting pitchers that go 3-1/3rd innings is just not as good I’m sorry to say.
My dad and I were the only people to leave the game that day. I was 2 and throwing a tantrum. Apparently outside the stadium was a ghost town. My dad was on the radio the next day to explain why we left 😅
I've never, until now, actually seen any of this game with my eyes. I remember listening to it on the radio while staining the deck of my house with my father and brother. It certainly made a hot and unpleasant task go much faster, being so focused on each pitch and out.
I would love to find the1998 game against the Athletics, Seprember 1 or 2, in which Wells almost trew a second perfect game (retired the first 20 batters and had Giambi 0-2 with two outs in the seventh). He ended the game with a two hits, no walks shoutout.
*Later that same year in September, David Wells took a perfect game into the 7th inning against the Oakland Athletics. If I remember correctly, it was broken up by one of the Giambi brothers with one or two outs, and it ended up as a complete game, two hit shutout... or Oakland might've scored one run. Either way, it was another dominating performance by Wells that season, who was 18-4 in 1998, and 4-0 in the postseason.* *As far as I know, no other pitcher in MLB history has thrown a perfect game and also taken a second perfect game attempt into the 7th inning in the same season as Wells did in 1998. Mark Buehrle and Roy Halladay both have a perfect game and a no hitter, but I'm pretty sure neither of them were in the same season, and I believe they both walked or hit a batter in the 5th inning in their no hitters.*
@@bigredhippie397 *Roy Halladay walked Jay Bruce in the 5th inning of his playoff no-hitter. So it wasn't a perfect game after that point. David Wells is still the only pitcher that I'm aware of that had a perfect game and had another start be perfect into the 7th inning in the same season.*
The only other pitcher with a perfect game and another perfect game bid (broken in the 9th inning) longer than Wells was Tom Browning. However his perfect game was in 1988 but the other bid came a year later in 1989.
Yes, but the hangover can keep you relaxed with just enough adrenaline. If he gave up a few hits, in the early innings, he would have gotten rocked and gave up. I think the perfection kept his head in the game.
Whats impressive to me is that there was maybe one hard hit ball out of the 27 outs (the sharp grounder to 2B). He truly handcuffed these hitters and didnt need any crazy defensive plays
Tyler Nersinger Actually yes. All MLB stats and records refer to the regular season only. Post season records are separate. Although mentioning Larsen's Perfect Game could've been done.
Overweight and hung over. A true naturally gifted player
Just like the Babe
He would have fit in any era of the game
I mean God damn. He looks like a balding man who can't lay off the boos because his wife doesn't want him anymore.
He doesn't even have his jersey buttoned up properly.
Wells Kinda reminds me of CC Sabathia.

Here after Domingo Germán pitched one yesterday night. 😊
I like how the second batter in the ninth did not try to reach first base after he strikes out. That was classy.

It was because the ball landed right on the first base line. Posada would have just tagged him out or had a direct throwing line to first.

I’m in tears right now . Remember this day as a kid . My dad was a big fan of Divid Wells .
Try to imagine how David was feeling as he watched his right fielder run over and get underneath that pop fly. Hard to top a moment like that.
