Hey David, really enjoyed following your 68 build, comparing it to the 45RFE I just did up out in my shop. I have a spare OD hub from an input drum teardown, and it is very useful for setting the "under construction" input drum's input shaft... up onto, while messing with it, instead of just balancing it on its nose. Also, not to sound like a smart ass, I use my spare input drum reverse hub to stick down into the (45's ) 4-2 structure, aka "center support", to rotate the drive line carrier to get an easy engagement, so that the "center support" drops right in. Also, "not to sound like a smart ass", I wipe the 3-3-2-2 transmission case slots with lube so that the "center support" fingers will drop in easier, instead of gouging in. One more thing, the BMF tapered snap ring that retains the "center support" aka 4-2 housing, I wipe the inside area of the case with lube bush, so that the dang BMF tapered snap ring doesn't chisel off (shave) the interior of the case, sliding, instead, on the grease, as the SN goes down to its slot.
Could you show disassembling a drum, cleanning it, installing seals/pistons & reassembling it on a video. Not necessarily this trans but on one that you build.
That was super helpful. I wish you did the oil pump/valve body video too! Seems like all the clutches wearing is usually a symptom of either of those going bad, leaking, reducing pressures and thereby smoking the internals. I just did this job and the assembly was super easy. The piston install was almost the death of me.
Fantastic content! I’ve got a nightmare 66rfe in my 2500 that’s got a number of issues you touched on. Third shop is currently working on it after the first couple failed to fix it. P0871 that prompted 4 solenoid pack replacements, a rebuild, more burnt clutches and some new codes, a second rebuild, and a valve body. Thanks for a video that helps me see and understand!!
David I enjoy watching your videos. Short of sonnax input/ output shaft a drum what do you recommend for 4l60e's for a stout one as for clutches and paper rubber. I see these blue an orange bonded pistons
Check rear drum front bushing. If you installed a new set of bushings they have to be below surface flush otherwise the bearing tanks on the back of the output shaft bearing will bind in the face of the drum.
Do you offer a built 68RFE for sale or would I have to send you mine? I haven't liked it from when my truck was brand new and even after putting a Revmax valve body in it. I tow, not that often, but when I do it's heavy, about 16k to 18k. It doesn't slip just shifts weird and tries to find the gears and it builds up torque at a low speed, let off and clunk lol. It actually shifts better when towing. Thanks
Most informative 68rfe video I've seen yet. Thank you
Absolutely
Outstanding video! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!!
Man this was great! Mine is starting to give me issues and seeing how it all actually goes together was really awesome.
Very good video. Haven't built a 68 in 3 yrs plus I have one to start tomorrow with a lot of sonnax updates
Good to see a build video. Nice change from regular tear downs. Keep up the good work. Cheers
Thanks, I agree always fun to mix it up.
Awesome video. Wish I could have found this a while back. Either way, I definitely just found my new favorite transmission shop Channel. 😉👍
Great video. David makes it look easy.
What an awesome video, nothing more than thanks very much for ur time and video
Thank you for watching we have a lot of fun making these
I own a landscaping company and I am going to be rebuilding this on Monday. I'm going with a nice stage 4 build. I'm super excited!
Good luck with your build
Super educational for the 68rfe, thank you

Thanks for the build video sir.
Anytime
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 That is a lot of great info.

Absolutely our 1000hp 4l60e is coming soon and it will have everything
Why is there a dislike button? I learned a lot from this video.

They make a guide tool that gets them in like butter
Great video man! Thanks!

Great vid
Did you make the video of building the pump and valve body? This video is really good!
quick question im having trouble finding a flat snapring for the input cluch housing do you have the part number
Very informative video. Love it. I have a 66rfe and was wondering if the build is the same since I've had trouble finding a manual for a 66.
Super similar the input drum will have double sided clutch and steels
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 thank you very much!
Hey does the output shaft disassemble with a snap ring if I need to replace the output
Awesome detail. Would you have the Transtar kit numbers for the 68RFE? Thanks.
Off the top of my head I think it's a 720002WEP but I may be wrong
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207
I believe it is Transtar Master Kit, with Friction, with Steels Part #: 72006C
Thank you, Sir
I’ve been having an 0P871 code any luck what it might be .I’m guessing the valve body but not sure .can I get some help
👍💪
Hey great Video, I was just curious if you ever made the pump and valve body transgo kits install. I just couldn't find it in your videos.
Im not sure lol. I remember doing it but I don't remember if we edited them I'll check.
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 sounds good thanks
How much do a 68rfe rebuild like this cost?
Is it ideal to set all clearances with clutches dry or wet with this unit??
I set all clearance dry then wet to assemble
That’s what I do also with other units, just confirming. New to the 68 this year 😂 thanks brother!
Absolutely glad to help
What would be the problem on I center support not going all the way down to put the snap ring in I got a .106 thrust washer

Ok thanks I will look into

I would need to build yours. If you would like to call the shop during business hours I'll gladly discuss.
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 Thank you much for the quick reply
You’re awesome man! Which rebuild kit do you recommend for the 68rfe?
I like the transtec kits personally.
bro, drill the hole in the bench, for shafts, unless there are drawers
You need a stand to sit you drum on. Giving me ptsd. 😆
What is your location
Baxter springs ks
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 what is your trun around for a 66rfe
Call me at the shop tomorrow and we can discuss
