    Another informative video for us RV10 builders. This type of info is invaluable for me coming from flying a standard six pack. The info about retaining the audio panel has got me rethinking.

    Nice description of the VNAV use, Guil, thx!

    I went for 650 + 375 rather than 750 because if you lose the 750 you lose both GPS and VOR/ILS approach capability because there are no remote NAV radios. Also, the 375 has the transponder/ADS-B IN, so that saves one remote box.
    Of course the 750 is the nicer unit but not for the price of having a single point of failure for all IFR navigation. Best of course would be to put a 750 in and then have a 375 or 650 maybe down on the center console as a backup.

    Good morning from Minnesota! Great video!

    Great video but I have one correction. The G3X Touch has vnav functionality build in to it and I use it all the time (no GTN or other certified IFR navigator installed). The big difference between what is in the G3X Touch and the GTN is that the G3X only supports vnav to the lat waypoint in your flight plan and the GTN supports altitude restrictions on every waypoint.

    • @BuildFlyGo
      @BuildFlyGo  3 роки тому

      Interesting! I’ll have to try that. Thought the g3x only had vcalc

      @@BuildFlyGo In reading the G3X manual further it looks like the VNAV functionality is not available if you have the flight plan source set to external. I also learned something new. You can use VNAV to any waypoint in the flight plan, not just the final one.

    Great description of the panel overlay. Now we just need to figure out if they would give us a “group buy” discount for all of us that will be purchasing in the near future. 👍🏻

    VNAV is great!, now they just need the vertical profile view

    Right side screen is very usable if it is in split screen mode. Less useful if right side screen is not split.

    I presume that you don't have auto-throttles with that auto-pilot, so that VNAV function still needs (alert!) pilot intervention at TOC/TOD in order to manage airspeed at the transitions. "Otto" throttle!
    I've flown an AP/AT equipped airplane with the A/T deferred and it takes real focus and discipline to avoid large airspeed excursions at the transition points.

    • @BuildFlyGo
      @BuildFlyGo  3 роки тому

      Yup, it reduces workload but does not abdicate the pilot from paying attention. I use it on most flights as a way to optimize my descent to a specific point. Pattern altitude 3 miles from airport for example.

    • @BuildFlyGo
      @BuildFlyGo  3 роки тому

      I’ve never actually used it for a climb. I generally use IAS mode for climbing at my usual cruise-climb speed, 120kts.

    Really appreciate the comparison. When it comes to RV10 panel space, how does the G5 location play out? Left seat only like your 650 layout?

    • @BuildFlyGo
      @BuildFlyGo  3 роки тому +1

      I've been thinking about this the last few days. We are considering a 3-screen setup with a 650 or 750 and there is space for a g5 on either side. I think we will stick to a single G5 though as chances of a pilot incapacitation + all 3 G3x screens going out in IMC is tiny. I'll post some pics of what we are thinking on insta/fb.

    • @nichenke
      @nichenke 3 роки тому +1

      @@BuildFlyGo That's what I was thinking here too -- majority of the time would be pilot flying in airplane related emergencies. Will look for those pics!

    • @BuildFlyGo
      @BuildFlyGo  3 роки тому +1

      @@nichenke just posted one idea we looked at this past week. There's definitely room on the other side for another G5 but I don't think we'll go with two.

    How do you get the G3X and GTN demo mode to sync? I only get one or the other, but they don't demo together.

    HI Guil! May be a silly question but any thoughts on slightly angling the G3x inward so when mounted there might be less glare? I want to do most flying from the right seat but would like all information available to my kids who will fly from the Captain’s chair when they are up with me. Thanks for all of the great videos!

      Hi William, I have not tried it but it might work. Should be easy to mock up or add a wedge spacer after the fact to try out.

      No TOD on the g3x unfortunately, but send them a message and let them know that you want that feature.

    Why does everyone put the autopilot controller at the very top? Wouldn't it make more sense to have it down low by the throttle for when you do have a heavy workload, or for comfort reasons and not having to lift your hand up as high?

    • @BuildFlyGo
      @BuildFlyGo  3 роки тому

      That’s a good question. It comes from the airlines and larger aircraft. I bet they have done the workflow analysis but I have not seen it.

    • @gogilgau

      It's a carry over from airliners which had their FMS system down low. Because we fly small planes, i put my autopilot controller beneath my GTN750 so when i am adjusting the autopilot, my hand does not block the display of the 750.

    Caro Guilherme, boa tarde! Vou receber em julho de 24 meu RV-10 que será montado pela Flyer, estou em dúvida entre 3 telas G3X + GTN 650Xi ou 2 telas G3X + GTN 750Xi. Qual a sua sugestão?

    • @BuildFlyGo
      @BuildFlyGo  8 місяців тому +1

      Bom, no nosso RV-10 decidimos 2x g3x + 750. Nao tem um 3x por aqui pra ver mas acho que o 750 vale a tela maior.

      I was thinking the same thing or even two vertical 7” g3xs and a third for the passenger if you want and stick with the 650. 750 is nice but big bucks. I love the symmetrical look of BuildFlyGos plane however. Pricing out my hopefully future rv9a start to finish after Osh2021 so I know what I’m getting into and avionics is about step 20136. Nice ifr avionics probably costs more than the complete quick build kit. Ouch.

    • @unclefreddy2009
      @unclefreddy2009 3 роки тому +1

      @@bryanpearson911 I would still stick with the 1/3 1/3 1/3 plan (Airframe, Engine/prop, Avionics). And then decide mission and equip for what you realistically think is going to be it. I am building a 14, and will cross that bridge shortly and with the inflation that is going on now especially over at Lycoming (insanity) I am rethinking the panel and may equip more basic with room for expansion and see how I really fly it. I fly a certified IFR aircraft right now, and fly a lot less "real ifr" than I would have thought when I originally did the panel over.

    you can use the 650xi as a radio, gps, transponder without having a radio equipment like the 225?

    • @BuildFlyGo
      @BuildFlyGo  2 роки тому +1

      The 650 is a nav com gps. 225 would add a second com. No transponder in the 650.

  • @azcharlie2009

    Been thrashing over what to do about GPS in my old 79 Archer.... ILS's are going away. RNAV GPS approaches are popping up at smaller airports. What to do? $23K for a 750xi installed? Are you kidding me? With $7 and $8 a gallon gas? Who needs it? Want? yes... Need? no..... The thing to remember is, none of this stuff works well on it's own. You need better gauges, a better autopilot, etc., etc.. And before you know it, you've spent more than your aircraft is worth. If you fly for business, and can deduct it, maybe it'd be worth it.
