This worked great - ran into a couple of things that were different from this video and that I learned:
    - when you pry the hinge cover off, make sure you're lifting up from the silver portion, as that is part of the hinge cover that pops off. There are "aesthetic" seams there that aren't real, you need to pull up from just a hair lower
    - when I popped the bottom cover off, there was adhesive keeping it in place. It will take a little bit of very gentle flexing to pop it off
    - weirdly, my battery only had a single screw (center). The left and right battery screws were not there on mine
    - the battery on mine was glued in (likely why they skipped the screws). I could not remove it, but I was able to lift up the portion closest to the motherboard to be able to remove the battery cable
    - when you remove the battery cable (and you should, even if you discharge the battery per the video instructions), this will reset BIOS settings
    - IMPORTANT: because you reset the BIOS, the first POST test when you power it back on will take a LONG time before you see anything on the screen, and it will flash several times as it restarts to find the failsafe defaults. You will have a moment of pucker - just wait it out. It took about a minute, and then I was able to get into the BIOS, reset the time, and verify the settings.

Just done it on my GE78 HX. Added an M2 drive and changed for 64gb ram. It wasn't as bad as everyone esle is saying. Additional advice: remove all USB devices before. Don't forget that small USB3 dongle. I'd also suggest reseting your bios to default settings. Don't forget to press that power key for 15 seconds. The hinge cover wasn't that difficult to remove. They have anchor-like plastic bits at the very end of both sides. Start here. Start removing the back cover from the top right corner (looking at the laptop like on the video, screen down and light bar closer to you), there's more "space" there to insert a prying tool. Remove the rest of the back cover starting from the back side, where the exhaust fans are, then on either sides, then on the side with the light bar. Avoid removing the battery by pulling on the cables. Instead, use a strong pointy tool to bring the plug towards you by pushing/pulling on the white rectangular protuberance of the plastic plug that sticks out at the center of the metal casing (you can see it at 2:15). I used tweezers. Be gentle, and use something else to ease the plug left to right too. When putting everyting back, watch out for the audio port, it goes inside the back-cover shell. Good luck!

Thanks for the video. This had been one of the worst laptops to take apart I have ever dealt with. Soooo many plastic clips. Pretty disappointing that they want that route.

i can verify this is a legitimately odd laptop to work on. It's really bad. I ended up returning mine to Newegg because I couldn't see myself doing routine maintenance to clean this thing out every few months like i do with my other devices. even the PS5 and Xbox Series X are easier to take apart than this thing. My GE76 Raider comes apart and goes back together in no time. Msi really messed up with the Ge78 this generation. It's terrible because the bottom cover envelops around the side of the frame, making it very difficult even if you are very familiar with taking things apart. It's very easy to snap pieces and the cover snags onto the interfaces on both sides, mine was caught on the audio jack, and wouldn't properly fasten back together and jutted out at the audio jack portion. Newegg gave me a full refund thankfully, Shame on MSi this generation, their quality has gone downhill. And it's a shame because the laptop it self is great, it runs cool and is a monster with performance, but for over 4000 dollars it should come apart much more easily and have a more premium feel to it when tearing it down. MSi is gonna have a lot of returns on these, it's that bad of a design to take apart. I will not own an expensive laptop that is a pain to do routine maintenance on. Ended up ordering an Aorus 17x on the way to compare the build quality to.
And don't get me wrong, I don't want to dish out hate on Msi at all, but they need to provide a better chassis for a laptop in this price range, they already are leaving out advanced optimus and g-sync, can they at least provide better build quality similar to the GE76 and GE77? is that so much to ask for? haha

@@joeg9244 Yep I too had the issue with the audio jack. I even accidentally scratched part of the bottom cover right where it meets the keyboard so I'm really upset about that too. I have taken apart hundreds of laptops now as I work desktop support for a very large company so I'm no stranger to plastic clips but damn this thing is REEEALLY BAD! The lack of Advanced Optimus is vehemently offensive considering the price. Otherwise, despite the flaws I do overall really like it.

Idk what you talking about, because after you remove plastic cover behind screen it is wery easy to take off bottom part of the case with bare hands. My version is Raider GE68 HX 13V

Your video skips over the part where you remove the hinge cover. It goes from removing the screws, and then the next shot the hinge cover is already removed. Mine is stuck firmly in place after removing the screws. Do I use a spudger? Where are the clips?

There are metal tabs you need to pull away from the ram cover, use a very small flat head screwdriver or craft knife blade, carefully pull the top three tabs out a tiny bit and you can get under the cover and prise up. Was unpleasant.

Yes, this was the hardest part of the whole upgrade and it isn't mentioned in the video. Those tiny little clips break very easily and it looks like they make contact with something that can detect if this cover was touched!

Shit. I bought this laptop, because I had a great experience with gp66. That's a pity that they made this model non-serviceable. And it's sucks that adding an SSD voids the warranty. I had to go with external USB box.

Use a pick on the sides, then have the back-side of the laptop facing you (i.e. so the screen is facing away), then pop it off by lifting/pulling from the part closest the screen towards you.. I hope that makes sense..
Given how troublesome it is to take apart these laptops, and repeated pulling the case apart, will ondoubtedly lead to damage - my recommendation is do all the upgrades in one go...
