Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
The MP5 is widely regarded as the best submachine gun ever made, and it has been widely copied. But only now has H&K released a semiauto civilian version of it in pistol form. Prior to the AWB, the HK94 was available as a semiauto carbine (with a 16" barrel), but that was prohibited in 1988. H&K followed it with the SP89 from 1989 until 1993; a semiauto only version of the MP5K (which was originally designed without a stock). Today, with the popularity of arm brace attachments, pistol configuration versions of short carbines and submachine guns have become very popular and H&K is aware of that trend. They reintroduced the SP5K a couple years ago, and now offer the SP5, a semiauto pistol version of the classic MP5.

Very interesting to see HK offering an MP5 that isn't made entirely out of unobtainium!
@Dave isn't that because the german police keeps raiding the main office and taking all the laptops?
@Dave that could be, i have no idea how much of my previous comment is true but some german person told me that the hk office has police cars in front of it very often..
@@sliceofbread2611 Nah, it is reasonably accurate. The issue is that the government desperately wants the money and influence H&K brings to Germany, but they don't like having to share it with H&K, so German politicians and civil servants are constantly attacking H&K for their own benefit.
I mean, $3,000 is still pretty tough to stomach for a "pistol."
Didn't HK have some weird dealings with the cartel or some shit?
H&K a few years ago " we're very responsible where and who we sell guns too "
H&K 2019 " hey, this PCC thing is skyrocketing and other companies are killing it selling them to the largest market in the world "

And a finger release. It has both. Good move.

One of the first guns I recognized as a kid, such an iconic 'special forces' gun.
I had a toy camo one as a kid. I remember one time, I watched this documentary on the British SAS and I was so intrigued by it, I would put on some camo pants, this camo hoodie I had, some camo fingerless gloves/mitts that my brother had but which still fit me (though they were a little snug) putting on my backpack and buckling all the straps around me, this camo boonie hat that I had, and then taking the toy camo MP5 and going outside pretending to fight Russians as an SAS commando.
Good times.

That roller blowback took me ages to get my head around when I first looked into action types. Great design!!
I still don't quite get it on the G3A3 to be honest. It takes so much force to get those lugs in that it amazes me they ever work. Obviously they do but damn they are solid.
@@RealCadde well I can only dream about touching the insides, but if you look at the saami for the working pressure that might help hahaha
@@RealCadde MOMENTUM. That's the key to all of the increasingly complex automatic eject-cycle-feed firearms. You've gotta imagine it working at speed rather than trying to imagine it step by step in slow mo.
Also, with so many people 3D modeling firearm operating systems today, UA-cam videos(like the animations that C&Rsenal uses) should help put the concept together. They really help with understanding some of the more over the top MGs(especially the WWI and earlier stuff), since there is SO much shit happening at the same time between cycling the feed system, the various elevators/lifters, reciprocating actions, unnecessarily complex ejection systems - Rube Goldberg MUST have been inspired by the early MGs, no doubt! Lol
damn I cant get enough of you Ian. u da man

Thank you Ian for showing the Iconic Iranian Embassy seige 1980 and the SAS storming in armed with the legendary MP 5.

This video makes me so happy. I've been wanting to pick up a pistol caliber "carbine" for a while now but haven't been able to decide which one to go with. I've wanted an MP5 for over 25 years. I've been very wary of the MP5 clones, so this will do nicely. Now to prepare myself for the sticker shock when I get the courage to go look up the MSRP.
I think Lieutenant John Mclane did wonders for the MP5's rep too lol.
THANK YOU HK and Ian for sharing
As always Ian I did enjoy the video. Thanks and take care.

@@larissaziemba9162 I'm Finnish and getting an MP5 clone isn't a problem here, it's just that getting a real HK-made one is hard, as they don't make one for Europe. I'm waiting for an MKE (known as Zenith in America) right now. The flash hider has to be welded on and extended so that the total barrel length is 12 inches, but otherwise there are no problems.

Love it, want it, want a proper Select Fire more, my favorite ranges have them !
One of my favorite things about watching movies in the 80s and 90s was looking at all the MP5s that were on screen and noting that they were pretty much all full auto converted hk94s due to the lack of the paddle release.
Ooh, shiny. Thank you Ian and HK.
Nice, would still love to see some shooting with this particular pistol model.

What’s the difference between recon and force recon?
HK found Ian’s hiding spot, this was the only thing he could grab in his way out
Good on H&K! We, in the US, have been waiting on something like this for SO long.
I got introduced to the MP5 in the original Rainbow Six game in the 90s, and I've been in love with the design ever since.
I remember the instructor making a particular point of the "HK slap" when I did the "rent a machine gun" thing with an MP5 at an indoor range once. The range employee who showed me how to work it was a laconic character--his actual words, as close as I can remember them a few years later, were "... an' then give 'er a smack. You can't [redacted] around with it, just whack it in good shape. It's German, you ain't gonna hurt it." Which rather set the tone for the whole experience. :)
(The "safety briefing" portion of this same instructional session included the sentence, "Let's try an' keep it outta the ceiling," which turned out to be pretty easy with the ol' MP5. The old Mk I IBM Selectric is harder to control, although the consquences of losing control of a Selectric are less dramatic.)
Watching your videos has made me very knowledgeable about guns, to the point that it's amusing if anything gun related is brought up in conversation.
I didn't know about H&K's nomenclature. You most likely won't see this but, would you consider doing a video about how other companies categorise/ organise their firearms or would this be too educational and stray too far from focusing on specific pieces?
This was a fantastic historical overview
Thank you , Ian .
Maybe they'll see the light and re-introduce the P7!
@@Rltvader1 The tooling is unnecessary, CNC machining is superior anyways; and MIM is cheaper. But yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath.
Great call, probably be a real hit. BTW I have been carrying a P7 since the 80s!
My favorite concealed carry weapon.
I had a P7; good gun, but I got rid of it because I wasn't willing to dedicate the time to its unique system. Maybe someday I will find another, simply to put on a shelf
@@ostiariusalpha You're really under estimating the monumental task it would be to bring back a gun designed to be hand fit during assembly. For a lot of these old guns, machines were purpose built to make cuts that would be prohibitively expensive and slow to do on a CNC.
Source: I'm a manufacturing engineer for one of the largest gun manufacturers here in the US.
Plus, if half the gun was MIM, would it really be a proper P7? It'd lose that magic touch in my opinion.
just a bit of trrivia:
the ambidextrous safeties on H&K guns actually serve a purpose beyond just allowing left handed use.
another purpose of the system is to allow users to operate the safety using their thumb OR trigger finger, you are actually supposed to use your trigger finger to engage the safety and your thumb to disengage the safety, i have seen people online operating the safety thumb only and then complain about it being awkward to use, so i decided to point it out.
Great video
Oh my god I don't know why I find Ian just endlessly listing off all the MP5 variants so hilarious.
13:20 Funny, i remember the Bundeswehr Drill Instructor in Basic Training forbidding us to slap the charging handle when loading the G3, so we don't damage Gouverment property.

If you've never shot an MP-5 you don't know what you're missing.

MSRP $2800, you're about right...
as near as makes no difference, "MSRP $2799," probably about half that for LE MP5's .
No, they're $700 for a police department to buy. If your police department is financially transparent you can see for yourself.
@@skyhop i thought $700 is for the UMP and the MP5's doubled that?

I have an HK-94 and it is truly AWESOME.
great info
i hope they release on with a stock in europe! I'd buy that
So far US wise no due to Germany letting them export this gun but under strict export rules
HK is planning to officially launch the SP5 and SP5L in Europe in 2020 (at IWA show) - info from the official Polish HK Importer. It seems it will be sold w/o the stock, but tbh it's no big deal to just replace the end cap yourself.
Just buy the stock seperately...
@@NowThatsGreg Didn't the latest EU laws further restrict carbine-like firearms under 60cms in length? And what about magazine limits - isn't pistols 20 rounds whilst rifle is 10?
The stock isn’t a problem... there nothing stopping you from buying a stock and just mating it to the gun. This is just presented this way for the U.S. market were we have official legal designations for “pistol” and “short barreled rifle”. Selling it like this allows we U.S. customers to buy it off the shelf with a background check and not need to submit a form
4 for a Short Barreled Rifle tax stamp to add the stock. It’s a stupid law that’s circumnavigated with our “pistol braces”. Your laws may be totally different. Canada, for instance, has no short barreled rifle designation for firearms with barrel lengths under 16 inches.
I'm a retired SWAT commander here in Texas. I've sent literally millions of rounds downrange with the mp5, in both 9mm and
.40S&W. If I were being dropped in a war zone and could only take two sidearms, they would be H&K and Glock. When your life rests on your weapons ability to go bang every single time, these two manufacturers simply cannot be beat.
I collect firearms and I miss the MP5. I believe I'll pick an SP5 up. Thanks for making this video, I had been wondering if the civilian version was worth owning.
In the twenty years or so that I was involved with SWAT, we had no mp5 failures whatsoever. I was one of our armorers, so I saw firsthand the wear in the guns, and they held up amazingly well to probably the roughest duty imaginable. Nobody spends as much time or as much ammo practicing as SWAT does. You practice as realistically as possible, so the guns go through hell.
Gotta love those Germans.
@ThisnThatPackRat? Err...thats great.
I love both of there designs for those H&K guns

I have a civilian marketed G36C it's comfortable it is not at all awkward to use I have the very gun you are reviewing and it works so well
“Hopefully this will lead to legal reforms in the us” do you mean banning arm braces or make sbr’s not registered?
I'd also like to know what he meant by that. All gun laws are infringements, so the least the ATF could do is just look the other way when you "accidentally" use a pistol brace the wrong way
CH3FxEXcELL3NcE I assumed that he meant that since everyone shoulders braces anyway that they’d just do away with the stupid laws about no stocks on pistols. Maybe he meant something else though idk.
Repubs didn't do anything and Democrats hate civilians owning guns so very unlikely.
Well since as a dealer we can almost never frond the SP5K, I’m not super optimistic that HK will have these available to dealers (the public) anytime soon.
HK needs to step up their civilian firearms game and put a priory on manufacturing to the US.
That $2800 MSRP is a serious dealbreaker

CIP is just some European proofing. "Commission internationale permanente pour l'épreuve des armes à feu portatives" and the SP5 got proofed for ordinary use ("N").
I have these markings on all of my guns as an owner in France because it's mandatory here.
