I saw the Shadows in 85, 87 & 89 in Wellington, New Zealand. Then here in the UK in 2004/5. I was always disappointed & saddened by the hiatus when Brian left in Dec 1991. Bruce & Hank didn't speak for years. Solo album deal that HM didn't tell BW about probably soured their relationship. Lucky they reunited let alone even spoke again.
I heard a few rumors about the reasons for them falling out! Luckily, the school boy friends are on good terms at this moment! 🎸
The Auckland show on their XXV tour was my first ever gig! I was 12, my Dad & Uncle took me.
Apart from being a brilliant rhythm guitarist from the birth of rock n roll in this country, Bruce Welch is a lovely lovely guy, a true gentleman who always has time for everyone he meets.
Bruce shouted once "I'm a star !!!!" And Norrie Paramor answered: "Twinkle, twinkle, twinkle !"
😊
Sounds like Norrie!
In fact The Four Jets did see the light of day on the US release of Jet Black/Driftin'.
Really Great 👍
Love the Shadows
It was Jet Harris who came up with the shadows name.
“We’re always standing in the shadows!”
I grew up with prog rock and a bit later punk, but if you put a gun to my head and asked me who are my favourite band, I would tell you The Shads. They stand alone.🎸
Why do you need a gun put to your head?🤔
Those British progressive groups had The Shadows absolutely in their blood. Look at the band photos inside 'Wishbone Four', one of them has the old Greatest Hits LP displayed prominently in the foreground.. Steve Hackett's first record ever bought was 'Man of Mystery'.. the Squire/Bruford rhythm section owes an obvious debt to Rostill/Bennett.. I could go on..
The Shadows stayed with Fenders for most of their career. Even after they switched for a short time to Burns guitars, they soon switched back to Fenders. The rhythm on many of their recordings is an acoustic but Bruce usually used an electric on stage. As far as I know, the only major hit the Shadows had with burns guitars was "The Rise and Fall of Flingle Bunt".
The story about getting first Strat for the Shadows often mentions hearing James Burton. Bruce has said that the story is bogus. What is interesting is that James Burton had started to endorse Rickenbackers after playing with Rick Nelson. He called his band . . . wait for it ! . . . The Shadows. Disappeared soon after.
Well I’ll be, so that’s where EMI was located, Hayes, Middlesex, England where I was born. Oh, well. I just thought how neet. 😊
My Strat, with a Gotah bridge, has intonation adjustment on the topo of the sliding string saddles rather than on the ends. This makes precise intonation more difficult. Any suggestions?
Hi Charlie, Can you email me a photo at paulsguitarstory@gmail.com ? The top Allen adjustments are usually height and consequent radius adjustment
Is there not a length adjustment on a Philips screw at the back of the bridge? This is the most critical adjustment for intonation.
My question to this famous group? Could they read music, or was it all by ear ?
To the best of my knowledge, I believe they could read music. However their ear playing was also very good!
