I think also the “thighs slick with blood” could be a type of metaphor for Dany birthing dragons: she didn’t give birth to them (from her body) but she still birthed them.
That was my interpretation as well.
That, and in Dance she literally gets on Drogon's back while on her period. And there are uh... obvious parallels between dragon riding and sex. The author is kinda hitting us over our heads with them really. So I think that might have to do with dragon riding.
People interpreting Dany's self-pep-talk as going crazy tells a lot of those people. Lately I've been reading that not all people have an inner monologue most of the time, so maybe they think having an inner monologue like that is like going crazy? You know, like, they think it's hearing voices?
Any way, apparently neurodivergents are more likely to have constant inner monologue, while NTs have it only on demand
So us NDs spent most of our lives thinking how everyone has inner speech, and the rest believe otherwise
I think show defenders just have to make the show make sense. Thinking that a person's thoughts means they are crazy is just driving off the rails to defend the indefensible. The only ASOIAF conversation I am interested in is TOOTGH, because ot is about the books. Anyone defending the show is irrational.
@@AMAubert Hey Antoinette, always a pleasure! yes, I was about to add as well - if you're going from conclusion to "evidence" then I guess that's how one would get to such an interpretation? But then almost everyone in the books would be mad :D But somehow Dany is the mad one?
Yay finally more Dany. George just left her alone for so long. I missed her. George was hinting what she was going to become, but we got there so slowly. Brilliant use of foreshadowing and building up her character. Sansa never changes, brat from first we see her to last. Arya never changes, tough and strong from the moment we first meet her. Dany is the girl who grows and transforms before our eyes. She is shaking with terror when we meet her, mother of dragons by the end of the book.
I disagree that Sansa and Arya don’t change.
Arya goes from wishing she could take revenge to acting on it. Ie the prayer of names (wishing) to what she does to the black brother singer as cat of the canals, I think his name was Darrion.
Sansa goes from being a piece that is manipulated, first by Cersei then by Littlefinger to the beginnings of a player in the game and aware of what happens.
Sansa loses innocence and becomes hardened and Arya loses her helplessness and begins to take action.
Both are on an arc that has implications for the story. Maybe not the same impact as Danny but it’s definitely there for both of them.
All the important characters have arcs and development,
Danny
John
Tyrion
Jamie
Cersie
Arya
Sansa
Theon
I might have missed one, I added Theon at the last minute. My point is Danny is far from unique as far as character development goes.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Dany is one of the only POV characters that we never see through another's eyes. She has a chapter with Quentyn and several with Barristan but it's always her POV. We don't get a Barristan chapter until after Dany has flown away and Quentyn's first chapter where he is actually in Mereen is "The Spurned Suitor" after Dany has left. This absolutely seems deliberate on GRRM's part to me but I can't decide what the reasoning is. We were with her in the HotU in Qarth, and saw her visions, we are with her when she is seeing/hearing Quaith but I wonder how her actions look to those around her who were not with her and have no idea. Think about poor Jorah and the pyre. He legit thought she was going to kill herself but we knew about her dreams, about how she put the egg in the brazier. I can see where other characters in the story may believe she's a little wacko and I wonder how that will play out. (I think Davos is the other character that we don't see from another ongoing PoV-we do meet him through Cressen).
"I can see where other characters in the story may believe she's a little wacko" - which exactly? She's not like her father, just talking out her mouth, she gets sh1t done. At this point there's no POV that could doubt her as her
Yeah it's always nice to go back and see how much George leaves in the open but people useally ignore. Dany has a lot more to her character that I love to see explored more every year with her anger being justified with slavers compared to the show
Illirio not only is super rich but has so many connections/allies that I'm sure we'll see aegon use in the war especially with varys.
Drogo like viserys thier names/Characters are still important to the story much like Ned with how relevant we hear them again and again or what they left behind. Viserys only his name being the last known male Targarean aside aegon later while drogo and Ned still have major influence in thier ealry actions.
The interactions between Viserys and Jorah are pretty interesting on re reads
When Viserys start yelling at Daenerys when she tells the Dothraki to stop because she wanted to run in the grass we get this from Jorah
“I warned him what would happen, my lady,” Ser Jorah Mormont said. “I told him to stay on the ridge, as you commanded.”
Later on before Viserys gets his goldren crown Jorah tried helping Viserys too.
See Jorah was standing beside her brother, screaming in his ear, but the roar in the hall was so thunderous that Dany could not hear what he was saying. The two men grappled until Mormont knocked Viserys bodily to the floor.
Her brother drew his sword.
Later we get this from Mormont
“Do as she tells you, fool,” Ser Jorah shouted, “before you get us all killed.”
Viserys never listened though.
Danny has an internal monologue and people start their thinking and analysis. Totally forgetting the entire series is character based point of view chapters. Wow.
I love how they cut out literally the only romantic scene and made it rape, in all likelihood, just to save a few seconds. Seriously. Are there any other scenes that could be considered sweet or romantic? I can’t think of one.
Tyrions memories of Tysha are sweet and romantic. It makes Tywin even more of a fiend.
@@AMAubert oh my god.. don’t remind me! Tywin is a MONSTER! And Jamie!!! Damn!
It’s a nice little detail that Daenerys reflects that Drogo learned at least the one word of her language and she doesn’t know any of his.
I am so glad you are continuing with this... despite this long hiatus in the publishing. I came to this ASOIAF party late but I've been enjoying your videos twice or even three times but I am SO eager for GRRM to publish the last 2 books so we FINALLY get the missing puzzle pieces.
Sadly it doesn't look like that's ever going to happen. I don't think we'll ever see Winds, let alone Spring. I hope I'm wrong, but at this point it's unlikely.
You keep my love for ASOIAF alive and well, milord and lady! I raise my mead and salute you! May the Seven keep GRRM healthy and hale so that we have a fulfilling and conclusive end to a marvelous story ✌️
If I look back I am lost.
I was pretty disgusted by the "sexy" scenes in the show, always made me uncomfortable, especially the ones with Dany/Drogo and Sansa/Ramsey. And I think it took at most a few weeks for the wedding to happen cause not only they had to set up everything, but he had to regroup his colony, which he wouldn't have to do if they were already there in the town. Idk how their colony works, just something to think about cause my brain won't leave me alone.🤷🏾♀️
Listening to this description of the wedding again, suddenly my wedding lunch seems less of the catastrophe than it was
Fights on wedding are unusual? Wow do we have different cultures, in my home-village 1-3 fist fights per wedding is a standard thing
OFC, weddings also used to last 2-3 days with minimum of ~1000 guests during those days
Love these, keep it up!
Great video again guys, loving the series
Love these videos. Thanks guys.
🙌! Loving these chapter unravelings!
Hold on...what if this dream wasn't just prophetic? What if it told her what to do? Targaryen women had A LOT of miscarriages and stillbirths that looked dragon-like. Also Viserys death was implied in the dream. What if the recipe for dragons is one Targaryen death + one Targaryen still birth (aka blood of the dragon) + fire. Think about what happened at Sommerhal. Maybe Rhegar wasn't supposed to be born alive.
Nah. I'm pretty sure it's fire and king's blood and possibly cosmic alignment (the red comet).
The dragon names are the clues to whose life was paid for their birth. Drogo's for Drogon, Viserys' for Viserion and Rhaego's (Rhaegar's) for Rhaegal.
Drogo is rather self evident but the other two are more tricky. I think the fact that Dany drew Viserys' blood in Vaes Dothrak where such things are forbidden is key to how his life was the sacrifice.
As for how Rhaego = Rhaegar, I think that he would have been a reincarnation of Rhaegar and that somehow through Mirri's blood magic he became Rhaegar. Hence her comment "he had been dead for years".
If you look it up you’ll discover that there are some people that do not have inner monologues. They don’t have an inner voice to internalize their thoughts.
The lack of an inner monologue has been linked to a condition called aphantasia - sometimes called "blindness of the mind's eye." People who experience aphantasia don't experience visualizations in their mind; they can't mentally picture their bedroom or their mother's face. Many times, those who don't experience visualizations don't experience clear inner speech, either, Lœvenbruck noted. You can participate in Lœvenbruck's research on aphantasia and inner speech via a survey starting this month.
Brilliant! I wish I could click 'like' twice! I've been absent, but always see these videos as soon as I can. Keep up being brilliant as only you two are!!
Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been to the streams at all much, they're 1am to 3am on my timezone and haven't been able to stay up as much.
However, when I was listening to them on youtube a few days ago, you said you might do some Sharp Objects content. I just hope this reaches you, so you know I would totally love that, especially if you would consider taking the book into account also, since it has some pertinent details that were changed or ommited that I'd love your take on. The other Gillian Flynn works Gone Girl and Dark Places each have their own movie adaptation and those would make great content as well. Gone Girl took some inspiration from a real life case of Laci Peterson.
Thanks dave and Mary Ellen
It's been a hot minute since I've read this chapter and apparently I forgot some stuff. Which is why I'm glad ME highlighted some of their pre-bedding interactions. Specifically, the part where Drogo caresses Dany's hair while whispering in her ear. That's such a tender and beautiful gesture as ME said, and hearing her analyze that brought to mind another instance where a man makes a similar gesture to a young girl.
In ACOK, Jaqen approaches Arya in her bed and tries to get her to name three people so the debt owed the Red God is paid. When Arya tried asking for help stealing horses instead he cuts her off, reiterates the rules, and before departing "kisses her hair softly". That always strikes me as odd because again, men softly caressing or kissing a woman's hair is a very affectionate gesture. George could've written something about Jaqen quietly disappearing into the darkness as quickly as he had appeared, but instead he had Jaqen tenderly kiss Arya's hair then leave. That's just...odd. I know Rhaegar=H'ghar is malarkey, but if it were true that kiss- while still bizarre- makes slightly more sense because it could be interpreted that kissing Arya's hair was really him kissing Lyanna's hair as Arya bears a strong resemblance to her aunt. Again I don't believe that theory but it's one tinfoil way to explain the kiss in absence of anything else. Great video as always guys 💚🤚.
Maybe the only reason the Targaryen madness was and is so prevalent because the people who are mad don't have dragons to even out the humans temperament.
How is Targaryen madness prevalent?
@@jelenajelisavcic9090 idk 😐 just a theory I had that pops up in my brain because I was thinking about rhaegar and wondering if he had a dragon it might have helped 😐
@@laurabryan6938 Certainly dragons help if you're in a war. also the crown prince not disappearing for a year with his cousins's (waredn of the south's) fiance, warden of the north's daughter, without not trace while his unstable father is ruling - probably might have helped even more than dragons
The wedding and the after scene were opposites... the war in everything
Khal Drogo…smooth operater.
My dislike was a misclick. I love this series
I remember when Grrm said it was way more romantic in the books
Martin needs 2 finish Winds Of Winter 4 us we're just craving 4 it! I want 2 know where did they get the Dragon Eggs? Time had turned them 2 stone.
question. I agree Khal Drogo was very different than the dothraki. do you have a theory as to why? at what point would a khal or dothraki experience a manse or fine wine to determine they really like and appreciate the finer things.
One of the eggs could also be one of them in the Dunk and Egg story - the Butterwell egg, stolen by Blood-Raven. Who would have every reason to have the dragons return.
i disagreee i believe they are the three eggs stolen by Elisa Farman during the rein of Jahaerys the first
@@asoiaffreak4255 I do agree that it was the Farmen eggs. Yet we must ASK what happened to that Butterwell egg? My guess is Harenhall disaster.
OOTGH!!!!!!!
Good night, my little dragon girl
It's all in vein, but I grew used to your beauty
With lips, accidentally, but with blood magic infinitely
👌🏽
🎶woke the dragon! woke woke woke... woke the dragon! Dragon Khal Z!🎶
I would disagree with one thing. I would not conside Dany having to be forced to sleep with a guy twice her age and size while she's underage, with whom she can't even communicate with verbally as ideal or sweet. 😂😂 True these are two different situations in the book and the show, but it still conveys the main idea that what happened was not consensual at all.
Dave saying obliterated from behind made my afternoon, but the show definitely ruined that last scene.
It seems like the horse and her were forced to have to leap the fire so many people she can only go in the area they open space up for or be forced to plow them over. I believe this was how she claims that horse and gets Wed to it. I think it's interesting how her leaping over the fire also mirrors a wedding performed by Melisandre to New Magnar of Thenn and Alice Karstark they leap over a fire holding each others hands. Seems like a wedding to the horse, someone who wargs a wolf is thought of as a marriage there seems to be all kinds of other things people Wed in this world. We have spear wives that marry spears , the bearded priest Wed their axes and green seers Wed the weirwood trees. Which the green sea is also symbolic of the weirwood net. Danny thinks how the horse essentially obeys her thoughts and slightest touches. She starts getting stronger and feels like she and the horse are drawing from each other and almost becoming I'm sync the longer she rides the horse.
I then think of Bran, if he was given the same prophecy Danny does about the Three mounts , treason ECT Bran has been married twice now none to a person tree and to summer so makes me think how very different some of those can be interpreted.
When you realize your first time was barbaric 😭😭😭
hoo boy
Great analysis. Love the books! Hate the show!
