Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we explore the world of simple, pedal-format preamps that can feed directly to a power amplifier. Goodbye guitar amp? Perhaps…
We’ve selected a bunch of valve, transistor and digital preamp pedals, and routed them to two power amps: one is valve, one is transistor. What can we learn along the way, and of course, how do the different technologies impress us?

Mick don't be reluctant to give your opinion on which power amp or gear you prefer. The whole reason I watch TPS is that you both do have opinions. I value your description of what you are hearing live. There is no way to evaluate something sonically when you are listening via the Internet on an iPad even with good headphones. Just too many steps in the chain. I have bought pedals based on your reviews and haven't been wrong yet. So far, I trust your opinions. So describe what you hear and make a judgement call. Other reviewers don't do this. They A/B some gear and say, "what do you think" without expressing an opinion or at least describing what they are hearing. WTF! Great show, inspired me to try my effects loop. Cheers from California.

+19MarkZ thanks 19, I guess we're just being careful as all the sounds are valid and we all hear things so differently. We try to present things in a consistent environment so it gives you at least an indication of what was going on in the room. We do give our opinion but Mick and I are more interested in this process being a conversation with you as opposed to a one way opinion based platform. We love our valve amps and classic guitars, but minds are open to other things too :)

@@ThatPedalShow similar sort of question, I know I'm late to the party though...
I have a line 6 helix, I down sized from a stupidly heavy 100 watt Blackstar and pedalboard but I miss the valve tone... Would I be better getting a valve preamp such as the V4 Kraken and a solid-state power amp such as the Palmer or use the inbuilt preamps and get something like the power station?

Love your vids, guys! I like how in depth you get with effects & how they work differently through different amps. Much different EQ's on different amps & brands especially. Just wanted to say thanks; been here from the Gig Rig channel & learned a great deal from you two 😎

Also, I love that you guys are doing more straight to desk stuff. In my regular gig we do everything straight into the house (currently using the emulated out of a blackstar amp) and seeing more options as far as direct in is super helpful.

Just want to give a thanks for you guys for making these videos, they are awesome and informative. And because of a few videos you've done this year I have finally gone and got myself my first Compression Pedal. I have only had it a day and already don't know how I could have lived without it for my clean sounds for so long, it just balances everything out so nicely and adds that little bit of sustain that just slightly fattens my sound without losing the tele twang!! So thank you guys for just being pedal inspirations!!

Definitely agree with the 'recorded sound' description from a modeler.

This was awesome! I was wondering myself if it would be worth trying the preamp pedal+poweramp way for my new and more portable rig.
If I may, I would suggest a part two of this with some more high-end competition for the Con"beep" ;). For example the Seymour Duncan Palladium, the Suhr Eclipse, some Amt's stuff, Bogner's, the Theta, or other ones of your liking.
    ...Please :)
    Thank you!

I preferred the sound of the Orange into the Palmer (I'd probably eq it differently), thought the Constable into the Fryette sounded the most amp like. The parametric mids on the Bangeetar would be great for overdubs, or playing in bands with two guitars and keys.

"It'd be great to see a wet dry setup using two Fryette Power Stations with one amp head and an stereo cab. That'd give only one preamp, ability to attenuate, and a more compact setup."
I posted that about a month ago, any chance of that happening? Your talk towards the end of the video was leaning towards that kind of setup. Excellent and informative videos as always guys!

I've been running an 80s Carvin preamp into either a Hod Rod Deluxe or modeling FX and IRs depending on the size of the gig for years with great results. But I love all the newer idea pedal-sized preamps, so there's some Kingsley love headed my way, so I can stop carrying around a 2 space rack just for a preamp.

Awesome stuff... Even though the subject is directed to guitar players, bass players (as myself) can learn a lot from TPS. I actually use a preamp(transistor sansamp)+poweramp(transistor StudioR) rig and it's great. Huge tone, flexibility and easy to carry around. Tube amps do have their place among bassists, but it's a compromise to carry around.

I love the show! I'd love to see a shootout between a traditional pedalboard and a multi-effects unit like the Line 6 Firehawk. Use them both through the same tube amp - no amp modeling. I use modulation effects sparingly and I was wonder if a multi-effects unit would be the way to go to have some fun with modulation. Thanks guys.

+Brett Just not our area of interest Brett. Sure they sound great - or can be made to sound great - but the whole all-in-one thing has problems from the start. You can't swap anything out, who knows if they'll even support it in 10 years time, etc

Kingsley into Freyette every time for me. I've tried the mooer two rock style preamp into the fx return of my single channel valve amp, and it gives me better cleans than going straight into the amp's pre. The mooer does need a considerable amount of boost to drive the fx return though. I have a Kingsley Maiden on order, and I'm expecting great things of that, for all the reasons you've suggested when you've demonstrated Kingsley products. One thing I must say after experimenting with the mooer into the fx return, is that - in spite of using a modelling pedal in the chain - an amazing amount of valve 'feel' remains, resulting in a far more pleasurable playing experience than with a fully solid state signal path.

Hey D&M! I am a total novice when it comes to preamps and power amps. I play in a relatively small setting in my church and as such, though I love the tone of a nice amp, I'm reticent to play out of one and create more stage noise that the house has to account for.
That being said, if I run direct into the house through a DI, would one of these preamps be enough without the power amps? If I'm running direct like that is it going to have a similar change in tone as when you ran into the computer?
The constable was awesome though I don't recall you running it direct, am I wrong on that? Any help you guy's could give would be greatly appreciated. Switching off of the HD500X is a ways down the road, but when I do it, I want to do it right.

Awesome concept, well executed video. Thanks guys! The tone of constable --> fryette was exceptional - just so good. This all makes me wonder how a pre-amp pedal EQ will interact with the EQ of the front end of an amp, speakers, etc... Is it an additive effect like splitting the difference between two curves?
Also, one additional plug for Tech21 - their analog cab/amp simulators are so awesome for direct in playing at church or in headphones.

    Hey Guys,
    Great show as always!
Dan mentioned that two of the problems running an overdrive pedal into the amp return is the lack of EQ and volume control.
Couldn’t this be helped by running a clean boost and an EQ pedal like a Boss GE-7 before the overdrive?
It isn’t going to have the same impact as a Maiden or Constable, but it could be a workable solution until I save up enough pennies so I can get Simon to build a proper preamp pedal for me.
In the last show, the D & M didn’t seem to have any issues going into the Deluxe amp return on its own. It is hard to tell on the video, but it seemed loud enough. I would be using a Deluxe as well.
    Thanks a Million!

+Lim Peacock it was important to us that the D&M has plenty of output, so it's there if you need it. Yes, the eq pedal is a great idea as long as when you stack that gain you have an acceptable noise floor.

Abe Ruper , i did use it that way but it did not sound that good at all comparing it when used as a normal pedal in front of an amp.
So, i asked Bogner about using it as a preamp pedal and here is there answer.
      Hi Andre,
It will not sound at it's best, like the majority of pedals it was designed to be used into the input of an amp. If you use it direct into an power amp you will loose some gain and some punch, the red pedal is better suited for that as it has much more gain.

"Feels amp like". That sums it up extremely well. I have several different amps (tube, transistor and MOS FET) and several different cabinets. Also an 11Rack. Ive found solid state amps sound just as good (overall) but "feel" different . Its very hard to explain. I am confident it is exactly what you are talking about but it probably doesn't come across on video like it does live.
My solid state amps are regular PA amps that I have plugged into guitar cabinets to experiment with using different effects. With regular pedals they sound good but 2 dimensional. The 11 Rack, for some reason, makes a SS amp sound exciting and "amp like".
Using MOS based amps come really close to tubes. I would be hard pressed to hear or feel the difference unless I did a side by side comparison. But of course, each amp and speaker cabinet seem to have their own identity. And from what Ive been told tubes and MOS FETs seem to react similarly and seem to interact with speakers especially at louder volumes.
My one and only tube amp (Blackstar HT 40) has that amp like feel (for obvious reasons).
When you have an amp or the right combination in your signal chain, it is very inspiring to say the least.
Mick, i have a 1990 Strat Plus with gold LS pickups. I rarely play it and often think of selling it. Then I watch an episode and you rock yours. Maybe I need to play mine more often.
Dan, Your Tele kicks ass! What a tone!
Thanks for another great Saturday morning coffee hour!

+Christopher Hamm All interesting stuff Christopher. Generalisations are always difficult but inevitable. To talk about solid state and valve amps as if they're homogenous things is where the problems begin. Clearly not all valve amps are the same and (Mick here) there are transistor amps I'd rather use over some valve amps. But there is no transistor or digital amp yet that comes within a mile of my favourite valve amp. I mean not even close. For me, of course, it's not universal.
As you say, speakers, cabinets etc etc etc all make a huge difference. Your point about the inspiration is bang on. The reason Dan and I get on so well is that we're inspired by similar things. And in doing TPS, we're not setting out to say something is 'better' or 'worse', merely to add some opinion and examples to these old debates. We try not to fall into generalisations, but as I say, they're often somewhat inevitable!
I guess what inspires you is based heavily on the things you've become familiar with over the years. Things you've gravitated towards and away from, and they're slightly different for all of us. People are often surprised when I say that I care more about amps and pedals than I do guitars, and that's because for me, all the questions have been answered about guitars. There's no more mystery there for me, it's just a matter of price! Amps is kind of the same, but I can afford a collection of the amps I want. Not so guitars. :9)
It remains fascinating. I play many Strats, all the time. Never two the same! Thanks for watching!

I have been going back through all of your shows you did before I knew you existed. Have had a lot of my questions answered doing so. Now, I have another suggestion: Kingsley preamp(s) into Hiwatt; out of Hiwatt into Fryette PS2; out of PS2 into stereo effects; out of stereo effects into Fryette LX II stereo valve amp for a complete wet/dry/wet system. This combination of Fryette PS2 and Fryette LX II offers a plethora of connectivity options that solves an entire basket of headaches when dealing with Hiwatt amps that have next to no external (daisy chain) connectivity options. As far as speaker options go: Fane, EVM 12L, and JBL E120 - type speakers. I know this is not the speaker show but speaker choice seems to be at least as important as preamp choice and power-amp choice (EL34, 6L6, KT88). Note that the Fryette LX II is EL34. Surprised there is not a choice of 6L6 or KT88 for the wet stereo signal. BTW, I had the EVM 12L in my Mesa rig. I sat my 4x12 on top of my 2x12 tremo-verb (I have a huge thing for 6x12 3/4 stacks after seeing Jeff Beck use Univox 6-packs! The coolest thing ever!) Everyone uses 2x12, 4x12 and 8x12. No-one uses 6x12, and the reason for this is because of the connectivity issues/demands which Fryette cures with its combined offerings. Also, Weber will make 24 ohm speakers which also solves the 6x12 problem for those of us HIFI NUTS who want to run everything at 16 ohms. My goal is 3 6x12 3/4 stacks in wet/dry/wet (actually 9 2x12 cabs: Bottom 3 are ported with 55hz cones -ala DrZ/Genz Benz- middle 3 are closed with FanesEVM - ala Mesa-, top 3 are partial open-back with clean cones -ala Vox-. Weber makes everything (Celestion, Fane, EVM, JBL clones) in 100 watt 16ohm on demand, and all in alnico instead of ceramic (also on demand). Yeah, I know, I am a mad scientist on a mission. Not for loudness, but for high-fidelity' I listen to Pete Thorn's amps and I do not like any of them. Compression is an effect and should be used effectually. High-gain, highly compressed amps are not pretty to me. Thus the Hiwatt/Hylight/HiTone choice. There are also 2 other amps which seem very interesting to me: The Mesa Boogie Triple Crown Series (can be either EL34 or 6L6) and EVH 5150III (6L6) or EVH 5150 IIIS (EL34). I want to use both flavors. EL34 for mid saturation and 6L6/KT88 for bottom and high cleans. In essence, a 3-way 2.1 system for guitar. This brings us back to the beginning: Run the Kingsley pre-amps into the front of the Hiwatt (the Chase Bliss 'tomato' seems like another good choice for this Hiwatt application). I'm guessing the Kingsley Page clean boost pedal would sound best in this application. Create that perfect front-end sound and then send it out to the effects and stereo power amp via the Fryette combination mentioned above. Clean and simple. HIGH FIDELITY like no one else is doing! Maybe you can get Andertons to join you in this collective act of lunacy. The $15,000 wet/dry/wet rig. Remember: (to paraphrase Jimi) "Not necessarily loud, but beautiful . . ." This is what happens when I watch your show at 3am.

12:20 good point brought up here. This demo is basically treating the pedal board as an amp section, switching between the amp options. So when you place the OCD before the amp, just like you would normally place an overdrive pedal into your normal amplifier, it gives such sick sweet tones, better than just the OCD or Constable on its own.

I have a huge request called "Budget amp tuning" episode . There are lot of guys like me who started guitar journey with cheap equipment. As long as modyfing guitar is relatively easy, amps are something more complicated. I am user of fender 85 SS amp but i wanted to go into more valvy/ less transistory sound. I found out Tech21 and its cheap alternative Joyo American Sound (30 $) . Putting this pedal into my efects loop absolutely changed my tone. I know that analog pedal in ss amp is not exactly what gives you tube amp but in this case i felt in love with that sound.I would love to see episode in which you take just normal SS amp and try to get as much as posible from it. Of course you can always buy tube amp, but is some countries 600 $ is two mounths sallary. I know you are both professionals using profesional equipment but you impact a lot of home-amatours with rather limited budget. Thanks :)

Great video guys, very helpful demonstration. Would it be possible for you guys to do a video about using preamp in conjunction with speaker/cabsims? Like the Torperdo Cab and the Neunaber Iconoclast for a direct rig approach.

Jesse Darja yeah there is that one too, completely forgot. Also comparing IR modeling vs algorithm/digital filtering would be great highlights for this next video.

Omg I've been looking into this same topic myself. Digital pre amp into power amp = versatility. Line 6 helix = Axe FX killer!!

Gosh how bad did all the cabinet simulators sound?
Via actual cabs though the Orange sounded great as well as the glorious constable.
Mooer preamps definitely have a place and a market but not in my signal chain.
And as an aside the show demonstrated how good a pedal the OCD is.

these cab simulators sound like how I imagine a real cab would sound if it was wrapped in a blanket, lol

+Peter Jessop As with all direct cab simulators, you can do a great deal with EQ and additional impulse responses, certainly for recording and even live if the sound engineer has the tech. But yes, straight out they never sound very 'good'. Or at least they don't sound much like a speaker. Cheers!

That Pedal Show agreed eq and ir would help a lot but fairplay to you guys for not doing that post production so we could here what they actually sound like

yep that usually happens with "in the box" cab sims, even in amps such as the Lany IRT studio (my lovely amp) the cab sim wasnt good, fortunately it has cab sim on / off so I can use two notes Wall of Sound and then it sounds absolutely killer

That Pedal Show how about things like the two notes C.A.B. or the neunaber iconoclast, or even something like atomics amplifire?. I've heard good things about them, but I'd love to hear your take on them! Do they actually get anywhere close to sounding like a real cab?
