Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we have a preliminary taste of the main food groups when it comes to guitar synthesis. From the simple Digitech Synth Wah to the mighty Roland GR-55 and GK MIDI pickup, guitar synthesis offers you a colossal range of options and sounds beyond your ‘normal’ amps and pedals. Huge, crushing distorted synth lead lines, whammy-type bends, sample and hold, crazy church organ madness through to a full-on jazz trio? It’s all here and a whole world more besides. Let’s synthesise, baby…

The difficult issue for synth pedals, is that guitarist only think guitar. A synth is a whole different instrument. And it seems that in order to make this pedal work well, one has to get out of the mindset of being a guitarist and explore a whole new landscape of sounds and color. If all one wants is another color to the guitar riffs, then play around with the various overdrives and modulation pedals. If one choses to enter the realm of synthesizers, then begin thinking globally with the landscape and environment of the music.
*watches one video of alan watts on youtube*
Absolutely. I've started writing in a more electronica style with the synth pedals.
So when Dan's in a rut he buys an entire synth setup?
And here I am switching to open tunings like a sucker!
I haven't gone thru all the comments, so I don't know this has already been said, but: as a bassist and lover of synth tones, the sickness you guys were feeling about the harsh highs are because you both were favoring the bridge pickups. Most synth pedal makers will suggest you use the neck pickup because they track better. The bridge pickup sends too much attack transients to the synths, whereas the neck pickup will send more balanced level of throughout the entire frequency spectrum. I'd also have suggested you guys play with trying the fuzz after the synth pedals, because the synth engines track better with clean signals. There's obviously no right order, but with the ease of order switching on the G2, I'd have liked to hear both ways on a few of your examples. Still a lot of fun to watch. Keep it up.
Christopher Skinner yesss
Couldn’t agree more. I quite like TPS but at time’s they really don’t do their research and don’t do a enough to showcase some of the specialist pedals. But they’ll talk about OD pedals all day. Id rather they had guests on to do the demos, people that know how to get the best from them. it’s a bit harsh to say but M&D are rather one trick ponies, you get the impression they’re just fumbling there way through, with no real clue. Laughing at each other whenever one creates a weird sound, just like kids do when one does a fart. When it comes to creativity and diversity they just don’t cover the bases these pedals would be used. Being blunt, they should rename the channel to “The sound like SRV show”. Sorry to sound harsh but the name doesn’t fit their MO.
Was literally screaming until @36:00 haha
I can't believe they didnt know this! Makes me question their intellectual capacity
Yes. I've actually had learned this first hand. I even turned my tone knob all the way dark.
I’m a synth/keyboard player in my band Black Whales and have recently purchased a few synth pedals. I was getting really board with keyboards and felt stuck creatively. It’s really opened up so many doors with my guitar playing. Also, the singer in my band wanted to play more keys and I wanted to play more guitar but not sound like I’m playing guitar. This pedals have solved so many issues. Just AWESOME!
Here they are! :) I was waiting for such video about synth pedals! Great! And thanks as usual!
4 minutes in and we've already got Monkephant... oh this is going to be a corker.
Nef oh very good sir!
so the korg miku pedal is technically a synth pedal maybe that's a good reason for having a part two
Gabriel Lima I need that in my life
They missed the boss SY-300! It's here ua-cam.com/video/jN0VAoJVXbc/v-deo.html
What a garbage, shameless way to plug your own content.
You guys have become the gold standard in proper analysis of great tone. Thanks for not wasting my time.
+Patrick Carroll Thank you Patrick!
Definitely. Always happy to search for a pedal and see that you’ve covered it.
45:52 When Dan shows Mick the "dow" chords I crack up. I've watched it over a dozen times. He goes "Noo." 😂😂😂😂😂
This video is worth it for the Rush alone! Great video. Thanks
Roger Comer Its debateable if Rush ever made anything worthwhile much less this show. You either love them (tone deaf individuals) or you just don't get the love (rest of humanity).
David D - how on earth can you debate a band with rabid fan base of millions? A career spanning.....wait.....why am i wasting breath? You sir are a tube for the "tone deaf" comment.
Matt Raino How can I debate it (lol we just did)? I just can cause I'm human and I have ears that don't like Rush. Different people have different tastes. They are talented. Just not the sound I like is all. Mr busy drums and whinny voice guy just make the whole thing a bit comical (I seriously thought my friend was joking when he played it and said he liked it about 30 years ago).
David D Ok fair enough. And apologies for the 'tube' comment. Still- why pee on others love for a subjective experience? Perhaps it's when we hear music and the context that can color it so....I suggest more respect for the taste of others. Respectfully....
Hey guys, huge fan of the show, I was just wondering if you'd ever consider doing a special on Moogerfooger pedals?
+Josh Geiger We really should. Such cool sounds, pedals and people.
Josh Geiger I second this! Big fan of that line! Such wonderful tools.
That would be a great episode.
Dan ? all chaps are ASSLESS btw
MOOGERFOOGER YES PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!
Great episode!! I love how everybody approaches synth pedals quite differently. Too much fun!!
What a wonderful show. Highlight of my week :) thanks Dan and Mick!
+Alex Flannagan ah, cheers Alex :)
12:54 The riff that Mick plays right here sounds awesome with the synth.
I know this is unrelated to this video however I had to tell the show. My King of Tone arrived today!!! 18 month wait but worth it. I got it because of you guys and Kenny Wayne Shepherd has one. I will watch this video later I must play now. Love your show!!!
+Chris Benson Yes! We hope you love it Chris. Such a stellar pedal. The opposite of guitar synths in terms of clarity, articulation and credibility. :0)
One of the things I love about my AxeFX II is the built-in synth module. So many possibilities, especially in conjunction with an expression pedal.
Thanks guys for a trip down Memory Lane.
I still have my Roland GR-1. It is great for some sounds especially strings, sitar, and banjo. A lot of the sounds have never been used in a practical situation, but it is a fun tool and you never know when the keyboards are gonna crap out! Thanks for the reminder!
I don't know what's better; Mick's funny comments, or Dan's disappointed disapproval of them. :D Thanks for a great show, guys!
That was the most laughs in one that pedal show for definite. GOLD!
You guys have to much fun! Great show! Great team!
Cheers guys! Great show!
the episode ive been waiting for!
Watching this at 4 am and it's a beautiful start to the day lol
Yeah! Love for Godin! They're absolutely incredible guitars. I had an LGX and a really beautiful SD.
Love your vids guys!
It's time to bring these pedals back out of the cupboard!
the Superego is so much fun especially using fx in its own loop. great show guys!!!
Best UA-cam channel ever! :D
+Roy van der Heijden Thank you sir!
A tip from my bassist when dealing with giant synth frequencies live or in a dense mix, a compressor after the synth will work wonders
Best episode yet!
For songwriting and recording.....this episode is invaluable. Thx gents.
I love my Roland GR55 - used tastefully and sparingly, it's been great to use live
Dan´s laugh is so contagious!! I love you guys
guys! awsome! thnx for the content. would like to hear more of the syth guitar pedals
Awesome another great vid I've fallen way down the synth rabbit hole I really like the boss sy 300 I don't always use synth still love traditional effects too but I tried the whole midi pickup thing and I'm amazed at what the sy 300 can accomplish without a midi pickup needed and because of that you don't have to worry about tracking it works just like a traditional effect.
Can't wait for every new episode of that pedal show you guys are freaking awesome much love
+sirkreuab We need to look at the SY300 in round 2. Interesting. Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
That Pedal Show thanks for all the great vids guys helps me relook at sounds in new ways and even understand how sounds work or where they came from and I can't help but smile the whole time always a great time thankyou
The rainstorm is just awesome :)
Thumbs up before I watch. This subject deserves you guys!
screaming blues amaina! love it!!!!!!!
That bit at the end with the Roland MIDI synth... HANG ON! CHORDS!
The whole midi pickup portion was hilarious!! Gave me some good belly laughs.
+David James Yes!
When Mick started strumming with those gold foil pickups my nose literally started bleeding. It might be an unrelated incident but let's just believe the tone is that good.
+Todesnuss Hahaha!!! It's a pretty sweeet guitar for sure. Still getting used to it. :0)
Agreed gave me G.A.S in an instant.
Hologram Electronics, straight from the Knoxville massive! Shout out to my adopted home town.
That was hilarious and entertaining, especially the full prog-off at the beginning (and the Zappa style stuff later on). As someone who plays keys and guitar it was especially great to watch. I agree with Dan about using a guitar synth to play sounds that are specifically *not* piano etc. I think using the synth timbres mixed with regular guitar tones is where it's at. It's basically what guys using Eventide and really high end effects over the years were doing, just not with pitch-to-MIDI.
That fuzz with the Hog 2 made my heart melt, in a good way!
I can definitely hear why chorus works well with a synth filter. Helps to smooth out the harsh high end from the higher end octaves when they are boosted.
Dan - if you really take to the synth guitar you may want to consider doing what I did and build the pickup inside the body of the guitar.
You can do it so the guitar doesn't even look like it has a synth pickup as the pickup can be built into the saddles at the bridge.
Look at the Graphtech Ghost system. That's what I have and the control switches are little toggles on the guitar with pull switches on the normal guitar knobs to be able to blend the raw guitar tone with the synth tone as well as use the saddle pickup as an acoustic guitar tone as well.
The guitar was built by Charles Cilia in Sydney. He now helps build guitars for Industrial Radio guitars which is the cutting edge of synth guitars where the synth is truly hidden in the guitar. Each fretwire is connected to the tiny brain in the guitar so that you can put a separate sample at every note on the board. It uses a special guitar pick that helps detect the attack. I used it in a test run in his workshop and it is even more accurate and totally glitch free unlike the Graphtech and Roland systems. Plugged into the Axon box and then MIDI to a Muse Research Receptor running Ableton synths, it was massive through his QSC PA system blended with an Axe-FX and it didn't sound as plasticky or gimmicky as the built in sounds of the Roland GR series or even the built in sounds of the Axon.
I'm sort of surprised you went with an external Roland pickup when there are many better options especially when you had a custom guitar built for it.
Cool show though and I really love that you touched on this aspect of guitar.
I've learnt so much from your show and wish I had known this stuff years ago when I was gigging with Midi, pedals, and rack systems through a Sherlock Fathead and my Belman Albatross.
I am so happy this episode was out today, its a rainy day and that ruined my grilling planned for today - thank god this was out or who knows the day I might have had!
Chaps, the gk does no processing (apart from amplification), it only takes the signals from each string (and the guitar pickups) and passes them on to the main unit for processing.
Wow...long time watcher, first time commenter...always been a drive-mod-dly-rvb guy...never even thought of what you have shared! Bravo once again gents!
Brilliant video as always. Years ago I had one of the early Roland guitar synths, which was a far cry from the GR55, but I always found to get the best of it, I had to imagine I was playing the instrument I was trying to imitate, rather than playing a guitar. I had particular difficulty because I tend to string bend without realising it - I'm sure most guitarists do - which was a definite no-no when sounding like a flute or vibes etc.
+Keith Spillett That's excellent advice Keith. You're absolutely right. Thanks for watching!
Awesome timing, just looking into synth pedals myself.
Got a 2 hour drive home from gig tonight, can't wait! Cause I'm gonna listen to this whole episode 👌
+michael Gormley Go steady mate. Enjoy!
Ideas for episodes: Oil can delays, octave-fuzz (both for sub octave and octave up) Harmonic trem, different stages of phasing, wah part 2, envelope filter, FF type pedals, Octavia type pedals, tone bender type pedals, and super fuzz type pedals. There is everything that I can think of that I want to see
That opening is just instant Adrian Belew....
Really enjoy your show guys.
What a great video
Played a Foreigner and Blondie song in the last band and a EH Pitch Fork came in handy for the keyboard parts. We were just a 4 piece band and only I played lead. No one thought it could work until they heard it. Used sparingly and timely, synth pedals are great!
+loudguy1974 Excellent!
also loving dan's cheeky wee synth funk face
GO Dan! The EHX Mel9 has been a revelation for me. Every song now ends like Purple Rain!!!!! \m/ Cleans through a wet/dry are just great man!
Stonking great show! I have been looking for tone ideas and wishing I had more of a palette to work with than our traditional guitar effects. This was right up the StraBe. Cheers!
A Clockwork Orange, Strange Brew, Black Hole, Blade Runner, Rush's Cygnus X-1...
Excellent job.
Ruuuuush!!!!!!! I was wondering whether you guys would ever do a show like this. Nice! Thanks! I owned and used an EMS Synthi Hi Fli when I played bass in a prog band back in the 70's. Wish I still had it. I understand they're worth a fortune now.
+Patrick Fitzgerald Yeah baby! (Said in a high voice like Geddy)
Since you guys are in the UK, I bet you could get hold of a Hi Fli with the pedal controllers and demonstrate it for us. An amazing piece of gear with lots of history attached, with Pink Floyd especially, and it would bring back many fine memories for yours truly.
Your Show Like You Is Truly A Gift Of Love On So Many Levels And On A Personal Level Your Sincerity, Integrity, Work Ethic, & Good Humored Kindness Shine From Every Video. Your Great Interpersonal Relationship Is A Fine Example Of How Guitar Playing & Music In General , Brings Out The Best In Each Other. So Dan I Have A Boss GT-8 And I Believe You Owed One Yourself. I Could Really Use An In Depth Look At What It Does, But More So How You Program It To Your Liking. Also The Cable To Amp Connections, Thanks For Your Inspired & Educational Videos, Fine Work Lads!🖖🏽
+Stephen Marksberry Thank you for the kind words Stephen! Digital multi effects are outside our remit for TPS so it's unlikely that we'll visit the GT-8. Our apologies, but thank you for watching!
Howling with laughter, brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm at 37 minutes still crossing my fingers that you're going to put the Infinite Jet into the fuzz! With the spits and sputters and random drastic boosts and cuts in different frequencies I am imagining beautiful schizophrenic fuzz madness!
+Matthew Bennett Hmmm.....
The Digitech Dirty Robot is the Synth Wah combined with a Vox synth I believe. I just picked one up and its my new favorite pedal. Does everything the Synth Wah does and more!
That Roland is frigin crazy!!
I was just listening to Thomas Wynn & the Believers, there was an insanely fast electric harmonica solo, now I'm pretty sure they used GR-55 so if you use them carefully they can work in the context of a 'normal' song. Great stuff.
Thanks guys!
This was hilarious.
I had a GR-33 wich I never bonded with.....
Bought it because of Jennifer Batten.
She`s fantastic!
Great looking T-style guitar!
Cheers!
Inspired by John McLaughlin (one the key pioneer users of the guitar-synth!), I started down the midi path in 1990 with a tele + shadow synth system connected via Yamaha TX-7. I've since changed to the Axon AX-100 with Godin Guitars SA classical + freeway. I used it live and combined the sounds with regular guitar via a 2 or 3 guitar amp system.
John's synth sound when combined with his raw guitar tone sounded amazing to me when I first heard it (still does). He's been one of the few guys to do it properly IMHO.
John McLauglin, Pat Metheny, Al Dimeola, Allan Holdsworth
Michel Cusson in the UZEB days
Agreed. All of those guys did it well. I'll also add Fripp, Andy Summers and Adrian Smith (yes, Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden).
Hey guys, thanks for the show. Just wanted to say you're on at the same time as another favorite show, but that one is on the radio! Oh and... Hello to Jason Isaacs!!!
+Fawkes1978 Aha! Hello to Jason too. :0)
What happens if you synthesized an elephant with a rhinoceros?
..... ell-if-i-know :-)
See now that's funny. Bravo. On so many levels.
Awesome
I could watch an entire episode of these guys just playing with the EhX Synth 9!
Brilliant show! You had me with the Digitech, but it just got better & weirder & funnier. Dan dissolving into giggles is just infectious -Lovely stuff. Please tell us when the TPS comedy tour starts booking - it'd be a monster sell-out.
i once bought that digitech pedal used as a birthday gift for a bass player friend at 35 euros .After checking if it was working at home I really wanted to keep it for myself!
If anyone wants an excellent example of one way to utilize the Synth Engine pedal, look up the band "Turnover". This pedal is used on every song on their record Peripheral Vision. The rhythm guitarist hits the chord thats the key of the song and then swells into the note so that theres a cool synth effect underneath the whole song.
Finally the TPS/Knobs crossover we've all been waiting for
love the show! I also have the Digitech Synth Wah pedal! huge fan
when using your synthwah in an fxloop of the loop switcher do you find it has a level drop? mine does.. i have to boost the signal before the synth wah with a lpb1 in the same loop to get a decent sound. its worth it though !
Yes! Mick is using his new Collings! Man, I love the sound and look of that guitar!
+Anton Sunesson I'm just sorry it was subjected to these sounds. It'll get more airing on the show soon, with some good sounds. :0)
Lovely! Personally I'd love to hear it through the KoT sometime. Keep up the great work guys!
Digitech Dirty Robot and Xotic RoboTalk needs a showing next time too :)
Micks face is priceless throughout the whole midi part :) There needs to be a super cut :)
+John-Paul Bader It just sounds like balls though doesn't it? Mick here. Maybe it's just me. Dan is actually using it, musically, so maybe it is just me. :0)
Hey guys I just wanted to say I love your channel, it's helped so much with getting into pedals. I was just curious if these or any synth pedal has a recommended spot in a signal chain? Whether it be at the very end, before reverb etc. Thanks!!
Hi fellas! This episode is awesome- please do more "weird pedal" episodes! I'd love to see an episode on strange delays (Red Panda effects, etc), weird bitcrushy stuff, and especially an envelope filter shootout (OG Mutron, Mu-FX TruTron, ThreeLeaf Audio Proton, Keeley Neutrino, EHX QTron, etc etc etc). The Deadheads in your audience (myself included) would REJOICE at an envelope filter episode!
+Charlie Olvera Cheers Charlie! Lots of people are asking for more out-there stuff. Let's bring it on!
The Gray Guitar makes an appearance...Awesome
Hi guys I have an SY300 no need for any midi pickup .I find it a very powerful and versatile unit .great video !!!!!!!
I haven't even let the video play yet, but I'm already laughing in anticipation of Mick reading the manual.
+Vincent Tuckwood I am but a bystander this week Vincent. No manuals for me. :0)
I write/perform music that is just layers upon layers of looped guitar tracks; stuff like this'll REALLY push my sound waaaaay out there! So thanks for letting me know where to take my money next :)
The Central Scrutinizer! Love the Joe's Garage shout.
+Rick Greene Play it all night long... but the band broke up.... etc.
I first discovered this lovely channel after finding the Ed O'Brien pedalboard videos. Needless to say, I'm 100% in favor of the weirdest, strangest, "unconventional" guitar sounds imaginable. The thing about "going down different and unexplored paths" pretty much nails it. Nice.
+Farewell Apollo YES!
You Guys forgot about the Boss Sy-300. One of the coolest pedals I've seen in a long time
+Daniel Biehl We had one there, but too much more one show. Round 2!
I know this vid is almost a year old now, but a comment for Mick about the Roland GR-55.
The Roland GK pickup attached to the guitar does NOT convert or process anything, the GK pickup is just an extra pickup with some extra controls. All of the processing is done inside the GR-55. Roland have a "kit" version of the GK pickup that can be installed inside a regular guitar (assuming there is enough free space inside the guitar) with the extra controls attached to a modified pick guard/scratch plate on the guitar. There is also a Bass version of the GK pickup, GK-3B, which will work with most 4, 5 and 6 string basses (and a separate "kit" version of the GK bass pickup).
The cable connecting the GK pickup to the GR is NOT a midi cable. The GK cable has a different number of pins compared to a midi cable, they are not compatible.
One feature of the GR-55 that wasn't mentioned in the vid is that it can simulate other types of guitars using a simplified version of Roland's COSM system. While the simulation isn't perfect, you can get whatever guitar you are using to sound like a different guitar, such as making a Tele sound like a Les Paul, or an electric guitar to sound like an acoustic. The GR-55 has ten electric and five acoustic guitar models as well as 9 bass models (for people playing a bass with a GR-55), that can be tweaked and saved by the user.
I'm not connected to Roland/Boss or any other music related company, just an owner of the GR-55 (and the older GR-50).
HA HA HA HA HA ! Brilliant! Made my morning that! (Albeit, a little late watching!)
Love the Show and the Rush tribute with the trip to Tom Sawyer
I started crying of laughter right when Dan played that sound for Mick.
I know he used moogerfoogers but listening to the synth 9 reminds me of some tacks of shadows collide with people by John Fusciante. Very cool stuff today! Nice work! :D
Another winner gents. I look forward to Fridays now because you guys create a brilliant show and there's always something of value to be found in each episode. What kind of set up do you both gravitate towards when you are in songwriting mode?
+Simon Godfrey Thank you Simon. Mick here. I gave up songwriting a long time ago, but it was always an acoustic guitar. Dan might be different.... cheers!
Thanks Mick. You can't really go wrong with a cup of tea, an acoustic guitar and a bit of alone time...for songwriting, that is.
I still have a Roland GR300 guitar synth and the G505 guitar. This episode makes me want to get it out and play a bit with it
The best. Period.
Half the reason this show is so good is you guys are foils. Thanks!!!!!
+Daniel Roberts Gold foils. :0)
Hilarious show today guys ... that GR-55 edit screen looks like a level in Tron!
