Very nice to see how you take it a step further with the symbols and writing on a glass! But a word of warning: NEVER USE ORDINARY LAMP OIL. That is dangerous and could set your house on fire! Only use oil you can consume.
I have storm lamps, and decorated the glass chimney of one of these years ago - simply using Sharpie pens. I also made a ventlys-stake 3 years ago using a pine plank that I carved into a viking ship and placed a shelf at the back with the tealight candles on. Only the flame shows above the ship's shields.
I've read that fiberglass wicks last indefinitely. Provided that grease/oil can flow up fiberglass, one would only need to top off the oil as it's consumed. The water on the bottom is probably there to keep the oil close to rim so one doesn't need to use as much oil.
I was wondering if not a "stormlamp" or old 1800s oil lamp which has a container of oil and a looong wick submwrged in the oil that you then roll forward when needed with a little "wheel" at the side would work for this. Those types of lamps often have the flame protected behind glas and a "vent"/"chimny" for the heat and a wide fundation so it do not turn over so easily... I was also wondering (and I have not tried this so it is just a wonder) if the lit lamp could be stored inside the oven over night. First for safty but also for the symbolic around the hearth as a place where you cook food, behind which the nisse/tomte/house spirit lives etc. It would be like the fire would "charge" over night... Just thought to make the extenstion of the wick easier and the "over-night-thinigi" safer...
I'll have to give this a try. Perhaps experiment with a mixture of cooking oil, bees wax, and some form of pork drippings. Nothing says celebration like the smell of honey pork.
I'll have to try it myself to confirm, but when extending the wick, it may be easier to push the wick up from the bottom rather than tweezering the burning end and risk extinguishing the flame.
The explanation I was given on why water was put in the container below the oil was to douse the flame if it got knocked over and also as a timing device for how long you wanted the lamp to burn. You can put a specific amount of oil in the lamp for a measured burn time. Visually the water is interesting especially if you put food dye in it as a contrast to the oil in a clear container.
In heathen terms, was Júl more important than Winternights/Winterfylleth/Vetrnætr, which I understand to not only be the start of Winter, but also a new year cycle? I do wonder how I could accommodate this Júl Lamp into my life, though I have restrictions from my housing association in regards to open flames, which are always to be extinguished when outside the property. Quite a challenge i feel. I don't even have a gas stove I could use as an interim measure, though maybe the interior of the stove as the place to keep the lamp when outside? Any ideas would be appreciated ❤️
DON'T UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES even consider leaving a gas stove lit. That would be very dangerous. Be ABSOLUTELY certain that you don't take any chances with this. And of course - with something like this you need to be absolutely certain taht you have secure facilities for it and not break the rule of any housing complex or anything like taht
@@NordicAnimism I wasn't suggesting to switch on a gas stove, something I actually don't have, what I was considering as a possibility was to place the lamp into the baking compartment of my electrical cooking stove. I hope that I make myself understood, being German and at times my English fails me somewhat. I will check out your website for this lamp article, something that will keep me occupied while I wait for your calendar to arrive. ❤️
Thanks for the share brother 🔥 very nice real nice . I’ll give some contemplation to this , as I’ve for while thinking how I could keep an eternal flame 🔥 going for my wonder working etc . I very much like what you’ve done , freaking cool . If I can’t figure it out then I’ll use electric ⚡️ for symbolic purpose …… I can adapt and learn , as Joseph Campbell once said ( about Christianity ….. yet think it’s good for any transcendent wisdom tradtion ) What science had 2000 BC is not what we have 2000 CE science is a process so too is transcendent tradition which much change to keep relevant …… as always good vibes good words 🎁 Be well ✝️

Thank you, Rune for teaching us so much of our true history! Also, your suggestion recently for choosing a guest/interview, I vote for Arith Harge.

Thank you Rune, for keeping the ancient traditions alive and sharing it. Greetings from South Africa

The glass looks great 👍🏼

Not satisfactory
Thanks for the demonstration and analysis.
