I love my E46, I have owned it since new (when I bought it in 2005). It is long since paid off and I have all of the service records to match the factory service guide. I change my oil & oil filter (Liqui moly 5W30 Special Tech LL-01 & MANN filter) every 7,000 KM.
    Spark plugs (NGK-ISP) every 81,000KM,
    Break fluid every 32,000 KM,
    Engine coolant every 81,000 KM.
Other than a mass air flow censor replaced at 270,000KM, and my serpentine belt (pullers and tensioners) at 265,000KM everything is still factory!
I have owned a few newer Mercedes and BMW models since then but the build quality of the E36 & E46 generations is unmatched in today's automotive world. I had to take my E46 330i ZHP into BMW of Zürich for service and they tried to temp me with a newer 340i sedan (to no avail). After 2007 the build quality of BMW started to go downhill.

just bought a 330/5mt swapped e46 wagon last year and i am absolutely in love with the car. drives amazing and ive been adding all the options ive wanted to it and even an avin avant 4 on your recommendation. with that head unit the car easily keeps up with brand new cars on the tech side, but it's just the right amount of tech. there's nothing i hate more than a car where everything is controlled by a screen and there's too many useless features. e46 has everything you need, and nothing you dont, plus timeless styling to boot.

I bought an immaculate 2003 BMW 325i in March of 2022. It was in prefect condition inside and out except for it had a blown engine that was stripped of the top end. I only paid 1000 dollars for it and I am converting it to an electric car. I have the motor coupled to the automatic transmission and installed in the vehicle. I just need to purchase the controller and batteries, I have everything else I need installed. I have several pics and videos of the transformation so far. It is orient blue in color and is a 4 door sedan. I totally agree with you on all points and think there is another good reason to add. All the software for diagnosing and tweaking is available free of charge. I have INPA, NcsExpert as well as BMW scanner 1.4. I really like the ease of BMW scanner 1.4.

I paid $100 for my E46 and I'm pretty sure I have to pull the engine to do the work it need's done, the engine bay is not that easy to work in, to do anything with belts you have to remove the fan, I can't drop the oil pan unless i remove the power steering pump, gotta remove the belt for that, which means you have to remove the fan.
Yes modding them is pretty easy, but some of the maintenance is just a huge pain.
And yes, I actually paid $100, I traded a scooter I was gifted, and a computer I paid $100. Picked it up from a friend.
of course, my opinion may change once I get the thing running.

the e46 M3's are incredible (driven a few) but nothing compares to a highly tuned, high performance (like Metric Mechanics) engine on coil-overs in an E-30.
I say this b/c I've had both, and e-30's are a few steps further into the cart/track feeling than even an e46 M3 on slicks.
My biggest issue with e46 is if/when the ABS goes out the car goes into track mode (meaning locked diff/race mode)... Now the e30 is always like this but if you're in an e46, in normal mode, on a wet, winding road and are near or at the apex of the turn when the ABS goes out then it's near impossible to recover from that.
fwiw I have spent days drifting e30's and the e46 is excellent if/when you always drive with the DSC button fully activated.... again it's when it's not activated and the ABS trips (happened to me at a decent time I did recover from) is something that makes me still prefer e30's.

I have the m sport coupe, 2.5L double vanos 6 cylinder, manual 5 speed, M56 valve cover, deleted the clutch delay valve, added a stopper for the clutch pedal to eliminate the dead zone. Rebuilt the vanos,.changed the fuel pump for new vdo, new shocks and struts, derusted it - sandblasted and epoxy coated everything on the sills, tear body and sub frame. Changed the rear brake lines going over the fuel tank.
Changed every bush in the back.( there are 17). Changed a bunch of o rings, vacuum lines, fuel filter, intake boot, fuel cap, oil cap. Replaced rusted exhaust flange and gasket with stainless bolts and brass nuts - drilling that was hell.
I open up the little windows at the back and it sounds great. Wooooooreraaaaaaa, next gear wooooooraaaaaaaaarrr etc.
Nice and sharp around town, seats 4, cruise control..
Got the staggered wheel setup so nice wide 255 tyres on the back. Looks good, sounds good, drives well, practical too.with fold down rear seats - I can get long things in it.

Drive it to BMW CCA events mostly. Never getting rid of it. Have it on the internet these days running Kodi and Python on stock HU.

  • @MrSpaz12

Reliability: I have 2 '05 M3's, both having over a 100k and only 1 time did I need to be towed (other than flat tires, which there is no room for a spare) and that was for a water pump failing. Other than that nothing serious has ever broken on either of them. And I drive like an idiot, so they're not babied.
If you belong to a credit union then you should be able to get a loan for one of these cars, even as old as they are. But you better hurry and make sure you get a fixed rate loan. The fed will have to raise interest rates soon and fairly high to slow the rate of inflation that this invalid in the white house has caused.

Wanted an E46 about 10yrs ago. Went woth E82 instead. It's even more compact & nimble, the 128i has the same fundamental setup, RWD, 6cyl, manual, coupe. The 135i is even more madness. I think what separates these is No OPF filter, not oversized, no giant grill, driver focused... These are all great & E46 styling remains timeless.
