    It might've already been said here in the comments, but avicularia species actually thrive in well ventilated enclosures. Higher levels of humidity can become a serious problem, when they do not get enough ventilation. I'm also wondering if the lighting might just be a little too hash for a tarantula, but I have yet to read up more on that. For tarantula's, it's also recommend to replace the mesh top of the exoterra's to something that has less of a risk for your spiders to trap it's tiny claws on the tips of their legs in. Another thing, which I'm wondering if you have any information on this, is if you can use springtails with slings? Some more experienced keepers tell me that they could irritate your tarantula, so you should wait for them to have a "decent" size before you introduce springtails to them. Good call on the removing the foam background, that is something I do as well. I'm seriously curious to find out if you guys ship to Belgium right now, haha. Good job!

    • @TheBioDudeJoshHalter

  • @PredictableEnigma
    @PredictableEnigma 5 років тому

    So for an invert from a drier biome, (like, for example, a g. rosea tarantula) you would just do everything the same only don't add water to the substrate or moss at all? Or would you still wet them a tiny bit, just maybe less than shown here?

    • @TheBioDudeJoshHalter
      @TheBioDudeJoshHalter  5 років тому

      You would still want to add moisture. The soil is designed to drain it to the bottom layers while providing a top dry layer. It would depend on the amount of ventilation you have. For example I mist my B. auratum 2-3 times per week to keep her mature layers established in her 10g w/ a screen top while my C. versicolors get misted 1-2 times per week due to their enclosure being a modified display case.

    • @TheBioDudeJoshHalter
      @TheBioDudeJoshHalter  5 років тому +2

      Hi Fletcher. It does not have added calcium. With Ts, they will hide in or behind the tank decor just like they do in the wild when the sun is out. It does not disrupt them at all. One of my employees (Amber) has 35 different species of T's and has these LED lights on a lot of her enclosures. All of her Ts are thriving in these set ups :) They are nocturnal, but doesn't mean that they require perpetual darkness.

    Could you please expand on the issue with methane?

    • @TheBioDudeJoshHalter
      @TheBioDudeJoshHalter  5 років тому +1

      In concentrated doses methane is very toxic. So, think of it this way. When you are walking through a swamp, you step into the mud and all the sudden the smell of rotten eggs is present. that is the methane gasses trapped below the surface from decomposing organic matter that does not have enough 02 to function and breakdown properly. Too much methane or methane pockets in the terrarium can and will kill your animals if left unchecked.

    hey bio dude i love your vids but i thought i must point out that sphagnum moss breaks down into peat moss, peat has little too no nutrients for plants at all, if you were too grow plants that thrive in low nutrient conditions like venus fly traps or nepenthes etc you will use peat moss too not give them any nutrient uptake from the soil. if you really want too add nutrients back into the soil i would start thinking about what breaks down into nitrogen, potassium & phosphorus. bannana peel is good for nitrogen and calcium for your plants, green tea, a mixture of herbs like st.jhons wort, chamomile etc all break down in the terrarium faster and more efficiently. i hope you read this and decide too look into it more as i really think your going around feeding your plants the wrong way .

    • @TheBioDudeJoshHalter

      Hey Matty. Thanks for the Feedback. The point you bring up is taken care of by our BioShot which is a combination of beneficial bacteria and fungi that feed on the biodegradables and adds nutrients to the soil in way of a 4-4-4 organic fertilizer, so the nutrients are covered :)

    I am looking around and I saw this video from 2017 ua-cam.com/video/IrRGGAGz368/v-deo.html where you use the Terra Firma instead of Terra Aranea. I will be creating a vivarium for a pink toe tarantula and I understand they won't need the soil to be able to burrow, so maybe the Terra Firma would be a better choice for the vivarium I am building. I'm just a little confused and would like some advice for which soil I should buy since this video talks about Terra Aranea and is more recent. Thank you!

    PSA: That enclosure is far too large for slings. Also, lights that produce heat should never be used with a tarantula setup. A basic LED light strip is okay- but not the bulb being used here.

      That is a very fair. I really should have elaborated on that. You should also never use an LED that is close to a smaller container. While they do not emit lots of heat it does not take much to overhead the small amount of space.
      As far as slings and containers go, we like using the small Plastic enclosures you can purchase at the container store. Thank you for your input.

      No one would ever put a sling in that large an enclosure. It would get lost. No cross ventilation for arboreals, top screen left on that could trap their feet...(should be changed to larger mesh thus increasing ventilation and no chance of foot issue) shows your lack of research. They don't need so much room as you suggest (3X DLS for terrestrials) and I'm sorry but you seem more interested in selling products . A light on a tarantula pen? Pushing product. No research. You asked.

      Not to mention, tarantulas are not very active at all like you said in the video. Even an 11" Therephosa sp would use like 5% of a 75gal enclosure
      No one would put cork pieces in a substrate for a burrowing species. It seems like it would just be an obstacle and prevent them from burrowing
      Also you keep mentioning "tarantulas and spiders" as if they're separate things. Tarantulas are spiders.

      Oh, and they definitely do prefer gradients when it comes to moisture and temperature, just like any other animal.
