    Some things to get off my chest,
    1. although the duke was expecting an attack it was not to be expected this fast, as it cost so much to actually do and so much time to plan to do it
    2. Inside betrayal was obviously not factored in and the shields being disabled caused so much of their downfall
    3. They couldn’t have patrols flying around as there was an agreement with the fremen in place

If he's crying and lost in grief, they will falter. If they look at their leader, a living legend and see the smile of a vicious predator who looks at the Harkonnen army and only sees his next victims, even if everyone is totally aware it's all for show, that is the attitude his men will have, and it will help them stay brave and feel powerful as they die, instead of being helpless.

    I love how in this scene, the Atreides are showed as using spears. Which with shields, makes perfect sense. Do you want to stab your enemies when they can't stab you, or do you want to risk everything from the first second? Exactly, spears should be a prominent feature in Dune because of their reach.
    On top of that they use a formation, instead of the usual Hollywood BS of running forward to chaotically fight 1:1 with suicidal spinning attacks.

    • @bonzwah1
      @bonzwah1 2 роки тому +37

      its interesting, cuz the spears only work in a formation, the first line NEEDS to be short blades, because the shields they have would prevent the spear from hurting you so long as you continued to close with the spearmen. It is only because there is a front line with short swords to hold the line, that the spears in the second line are then effective. The first time I watched the movie, I didn't even realize that the scene was meant to demonstrate the superiority of the sardukar...I just thought that the formation was simply compromised once assailed from both sides.

      Not sure if you ever did any HEMA, but the whole 'if they get past the point you're screwed' is a bit of a trope. It's not true. I'm no expert either, but I know this.
      That counted mostly for pikemen, because a 7 meter long pike is much less flexible than a 2 meter spear.
      A spear you can simply jank back and short-wield instead. There's no law that says you have to drop the spear and give up if you ca no longer thrust by holding the furthest part of the shaft.

    • @bonzwah1
      @bonzwah1 2 роки тому +31

      @@nvelsen1975 no no you misunderstand. you're too tunnel visioned in on the spear part that you forgot the key feature of Dune comabt...the shield. there is a reason why the short sword is the weapon of choice. it is because all fighting has become grappling due to the fact that you cannot move anything quickly within the range of the shield. so the only way to kill someone is to slowly press something sharp next to a weak part of the armor and slowly press it into the person. that is why grappling features so heavily in Dune combat, because you need to hold the opponent in a "checkmate" position and then execute them. the spear cannot do that unassisted, because your reach isn't long enough to hold the opponent still for your spear...so its only useful when working with someone who can do the grappling for you.
      -
      as for shortening your grip, you must recognize the advantage to having an edge for this type of fighting with the shield up. short sword hold major advantage. that's why everyone uses it as the primary, and the spear was shown as a unique situational weapon.

    Actually in the book, the Atreides troops fall back to the caves in the inside of the Shield Wall, where they can reduce the numbers of enemy that can fight them at the same time, buying time for the Atreides to show captured Sardaukar to the Randstadt and gather the Great Houses to their banner as allies. This would also give them time to convince the Fremen to ally with them. But the Baron, or maybe Petr, predicted such tactics and he brought to Dune, tube artillery using chemical explosive shells. Rather than fighting the Atreides face to face, he bombarded them. He knew the shells could not produce many casualties because the fragments wouldn't penetrate the body shields, but the shells would collapse the cave entrances, sealing the Atreides troops into the caves which became their tombs.

Fully armoured and slaughtering harkonnens and then the sardaukar drop in and it’s actually a close fight. I know DV is not known for his battle scenes necessarily but that would have been dope. The loyalty of House Atreides' servants is what caused their guard to be down.
    Not a one of them believed anybody within that city would raise a hand against the Duke. Especially not the family's own trusted Physician, who could easily poison and kill the entire family with virtually zero effort. Yueh's closeness with the family would have made it easy for him to get past much of the security before being able to shoot his way to disabling the city's shield, which, if active at the time of the attack, would have MASSIVELY drawn out the battle and given the Atreides troops at least an hour of warning and prep time before the shield was breached. As it was, their defenses were so thoroughly sabotaged (probably both by Harkonnens ahead of time as well as by Yueh) that they were very effectively blitzed, and they STILL put up a damn good fight.
    As for conditioning..... ehh. People can do very drastic things when their loved ones are in danger.
    I'm not gonna argue that Dune is a cinematic masterpiece, but it's one of the best book-to-film adaptations we've had in a long time, possibly since your mentioned LOTR films.
    Plus, most Atreides troops at this point are still nowhere near Sardaukar level. The Sardaukar involvement was likely reduced from 7 battalions down to 2 to play up how much of a game-changer just a few of them can be; this will further serve to emphasize how dangerous the Fremen are, and went a long way to show how dangerous Duncan was, because if so few Sardaukar are needed to tip the scales of a war, how powerful, then, would millions of Fremen be?
