I mean it's in the title. I was making this video as a direct comparison to Diablo. I really wasn't *that* harsh towards TL2 anyways - I quite liked it. It's all an opinion at the end of the day and if you disagree with what I said, I respect that.
Yea definitely, diablo 2 always rubbed me the wrong way, I hated the loot system which is such a massive part of these games, on that front I think diablo 3 and inquisitor martyr do it the best, Victor vran and the incredible adventures of van helsing trilogy also have great loot systems
The video starts really well, but it quickly falls into a big problem, one that I can understand since it could happen to anyone, more when you are fan of a niche genre. Look I understand, Diablo is the goat for a reason and I get that we want to hold each game in that genre up to those standards, more when those standards doesn't need to compromise the direction of the game and are much related to general stuff or even quality of life content, but after the first half your video really comes as you wanting Torchlight to replace completely diablo and do the same things in the same way, hell even stuff like artistic direction and music. I see why you can draw comparisons and that this game clearly has inspiration from Diablo and I'm sure if I had played those before Torchlight I may even hold the same views in some way but Torchlight is it's own thing and at no point you seem to acknowledge this to some degree to accept it's not that bad to not be like Diablo. As I said, the review is not bad, the critics about the difficulty are really good and make sense but in some areas and moments it really feels like this game should be Diablo to satisfy you, and in some way I think this is the sad reason why this genre is in the way it is, since almost all new releases are compared to Diablo and in some way hoping it is Diablo, which is one of the reason Blizzard not only can do whatever they want with the IP, not caring, but why they still get tons of sells despite it, because people still crave for that IP and since there is barely to no competition Blizzard has a sort of monopoly in the genre, which only hurts it. I understand the feeling of not having seen your favourite genre reach the same high it did 20 years ago but I don't think this way of thinking helps the genre to grow.
They opted for "cartoony" to avoid the dated graphic element in Diablo/Diablo II. Cartoon-like graphics age better. That said, I love Torchlight II. Like all games, there are some issues, but for the most part, I enjoy it immensely.
NG+ doesn't increase the difficulty? Someone didn't go above lvl 60. ;) Plus, NG+ adds more dungeons, including an endgame raid dungeon. Also, playing on normal and complaining that the game is easy doesn't really track. Reviewing a game you haven't played thoroughly and haven't even researched adequately = a bad reviewer.
Eric an Max Schaefer are both brilliant minds from Blizzard North! I think torchlight I & II are trying to grab the minds of the younger generations. Diablo I & II will forever be the standard for ARPGs !! Another awesome video!!!
I agree D1 is oldskool but I don't think I have had so much relief in a game like D1 gave me when I defeated the skeleton king and got my first blue. It was a claymore. Those were the days.
man this video is so good the editing is ok and you give a high detail explanation of the torchlight 2 in the end I'll still just replay d1 and d2 over and over and over because blizzard is gone they have switched so much that there not the same company

The review is actually pretty poor as a lot of what he says is objectively wrong. He does say it convincingly and over a nicely edited video though. :)
Quite a few of your point have been resolved with community mods or even mods released by Runic Games or at least dev working for RUnic Games. I understand your point about the music but can we really blame Runic Games that much for sounding like Diablo? They hired the same composer yes but that is just showing that said composer is a one trick pony. Yes maybe they could have just scraped what he did and started over again but RUnic not being the massive machine which is Blizzard I'm pretty sure they did not have the funds to do that and had to go with it regardless of how they felled the music was like Diablo or not. And for the artistic style if it would have been different I believe they would have critics saying "They are copying Diablo style". My opinion is that they've gone with a different style to be different. I believe that we must take a step back in this day and age, regarding similar content. As humanity is a massive production machine in every aspect of life, everyone if pouring content like crazy and of course more and more is gonna feel the same. Easy to say "Huh, already been done!" when I myself believe that there is not much new stuff to find all around. My opinion is that Torchlight II does better DIablo than Diablo itself.
Guys, I’m going to get a switch lite late this week, I’m thinking about getting D3 due to playing pc version since 2012, and also own Torchlight 2 on steam
Kevin Soto d3 is fun and all but it gets pretty stale at 500 or so paragons as you will most likely have all the best gear. Then it’s about the seasons and rewards but all the leaderboards are full of item hackers with 13 second runs on greater rift 150. Fun game all in all and has replayability but right now I am looking for a replacement to the game.
I heard about Torchlight but didn't pay that much attention to it. It doesn't sound like the true Diablo alternative i expected from what you describe. Though i will likely give it a try in September when it hits PS4. I am hungry enough for an Action RPG right now that i need something new to play. lol
I spent 6 years on Diablo 2...man it was the best gaming time I've had in my life. Of course I missed a lot of social things in high school but man was it the game of games...kids these days are missing out. Just so perfect.
How IS Diablo 2? I mean, the fact that you spent 6 years playing it kinda tells me you like the game. But, as someone that has no nostalgia for Diablo, and hasn't really played any Diablo-like game for super long, how would it be? Diablo 2 will be on Xbox soon, and I was considering picking it up in a sale eventually, but...how does the game hold up in 2021 for someone that hasn't really grown up with these kinds of games? I've PLAYED these kinds of games before, I understand how they work. I just haven't played any one game for super long. I've played the Van Helsing Diablo-like games, I've played Torchlight 1 a bit, I just started up Torchlight 2, I've played a bit of Diablo 3, I played that one somewhat recent Warhammer game that's kinda like a Diablo game. I just never got very far in any of 'em. None of them have like, HOOKED me. I enjoy the genre, I enjoy these kinds of games, but a game has to really hook me quickly for me to wanna stick with it.
I’ve only just recently gave tl2 a real go. Between this and my standby grim dawn, I was able to scratch a Diablo 4 itch without supporting the dry experience that d4 server slam was for me. Idk what it was exactly but there are too many good arpgs to try and breakdown why a diablo from modern blizzard just doesn’t do it for me. Tl2 is imo one of the best single player arpgs I’ve ever played I think. Nearly grim dawn level, but I wasn’t trying to compare it to Diablo so much as trying to forget that I wasn’t playing a Diablo if that makes sense.
No doubt. TL2 is great. My channel a few years ago was very popular for my Diablo videos. So I made this video initially for diablo fans and what other games they could consider. Got a lot of hate for this video because of that. I usually recommend TL2 to ant ARPG fans.

Guess poor dude got death threats and shut down the comments like ppl chillllllll, we all love arpgs and there’s just enough that we can all like and dislike certain vibes. I love torchlights art style, which is actually very similar to diablo 3, and animated games always age much better than realistic games, and there was always something about diablo 2s loot system that just rubbed me the wrong way, i cant hoard loot to mass sell or dismantle it once i return to town due to the lack of storage space, leaving 90% of the loot on the ground just hurts my soul, and i dont play free to play games anyways but even if path of exile was a premium game i have the same problem with their loot system as well, on that front games like diablo 3, wolcen and inquisitor martyr do it much better
Go hit the button, his explanation about NG+ difficulty is objectively wrong and he clearly didn't play more than just several minutes in that mode. NG+ offers multiple new dungeons as well as an endgame raid dungeon. Veteran and Elite difficulties are especially fun to play, there is a hardcore option that's nightmarishly difficult and fun, and there are even more item types in the end game which he didn't list as he clearly didn't play that much.
I enjoy playing D3 more but I really love and adore Torchlight 2 PLUS for playing with friends and family them picking up Torchlight 2 is a cheaper easier option for them to think about and pick up to play. In a perfectly world you WANT to buy and WANT to pick up both. However for those whom either hate Blizzard (an who can blame you these days) you can get a GREAT title in Torchlight 2 for pretty cheap.
@@TheSuperRetroBros Agreed Path of Exile is ok but the cash shop is pushed too much in the face for me to ever reccomend it to anyone but the truly broke. Then I recommend Torchlight 1 and 2 (3 kinda is scaring me a bit. Any chance you cover that coming up?) and then the best of the genre but the most pricey for the best version of the game at 30 or 40$ for console or pc is Diablo 3 which I have loved an adored. An yea the value for the 15 to 20$ Torchlight 2 is is phenomenal. Plus it is a great game for the casual gamer to evolve into other games in the genre like D3 an others.
Shared loot completely ruins playing with Randoms, unless I'm playing with friends shared loot is always a bad thing, but even with friends there's always that one guy who just tries to grab everything, shared loot can completely ruin the experience, I always look to see if a game has instanced loot and if it does I buy that game lol
Yes, and No. I have so many Diablo-like games on my Xbox that I can't get myself to play any of 'em for more than a short amount of time because I'm always like "but I have these others I could play..." I have Diablo 3, Torchlight 1 and 2, like 3-4 Van Helsing themed Diablo-like games, a Warhammer game, Vikings Wolves of Midgard, and most recently 'Shadows Awakening', as well as Path of Exile. I've played all but two of them for like, a couple hours each. I always turn it off because I can't figure out which one I want to actually stick with. I start Torchlight, remember I have Diablo 3, swap to that, remember I'm a little ways into Victor Vran and swap to that, then like 3 days later I swap back to Torchlight. Like, I dunno which one's considered the best, I dunno which one is actually worth spending a long time in.
can't wait to see any aRPG videos. I enjoy Torchlight 1 back when it 1st came out, aPRG was rare and barely existence back in those days, so anything to quench the thirst. The art style was fine for a bit, but old and bored duing the 2nd game.
Aside from what others have mentioned, the video was a bit messy. You switch between talking about Diablo and Torchlight so quick sometimes, that I couldn't always tell what game you were talking about. At one point you went immediately from talking about Diablo's skills and stuff, to talking about difficulty and classes. And having never played Torchlight, and only playing a little bit of Diablo 3, it took me a good minute or two to realize you were suddenly talking about Torchlight 2.
skip to 2:10 for TL. TBH I played TL on 360 but quit, it's just too cartoonish while feeling the diablo mechanics underneath the varnish. Quite a disconnect. Of course I'll get TL2. Thanks for covering game+, it is not something to look forward to.
I love LoD and hope to see the day it gets ported to Lite. But the devs that made the heart of LoD tick didn't do so well on TL1 and TL2 wrt the graphics, lore and sound department, as well as the level design. So what good were these LoD devs actually? The loot system. Yes the loot system is there in TL2. Gems and sockets. But that's all, and it just is not enough. I tried to like TL1 on x360 and TL2 on Lite, but just failed. Say what you will but d3 on lite has more variety and a deeper lore than TL1 or 2. The maps of TL2 are always the same. Added difficulty feels pointless. TL2 (the demo) feels pointless from start to finish. D3 is just as pointless, but doesn't FEEL pointless. It feels amusing. For a TL3 to come close to LoD the aforementioned parts need fixing. NPCs with voices. LoD was created in that one magical moment where all the talent combined was there to deliver LoD. It will never happen again, and for that we are just stuck with D3, and DOS2.

I guess it's fair to compare Torchlight to Diablo, as the Diablo-clone it is, but you trash the game a lot for being too Diablo, then your comparing it all the tim to the three Diablos, each one made in different years (Diablo III even a decade later) as if that was fair. One of your "but"'s is that you didn't like the Dwarf aesthetic because it wasn't the Diablo last chapter aesthetic? Really? You just don't like this game because it's not the Diablo 2-3 mix you wanted in your mind. Grow up.
Yeah I mean I get what you're saying. Other than the "grow up" comment. I'm allowed to have my own opinions on the game's style, theme, and overall presentation - no matter how flawed they may be. My major point with the "too much like Diablo" and then seemingly wishing it had certain aspects of it is simply this: It seemed that the game relied too heavily on Diablo nostalgia in certain areas, and then went to the other spectrum of ARPG of being too soft and too different. There IS a middle ground somewhere. Maybe someday I'll be able to put it into words better. However I appreciate your comment.

Dude lol, This game has NG+ and NG++ ect ect. Ontop of being able to choose your difficulty at the start to cater your playthrough to how you want to play, the game ALSO has the hell, and nightmare modes from diablo 2, it's just named more simply. How did this get a thumbs down?
I would go as far as to say that the thematics of Torchlight vs Diablo are so far off that I cannot see it that way. Maybe gameplay-wise to a certain extent, but it doesn't do it for me.
There's nothing worse than fixed stats in any type of RPG, but especially in ARPGs, every piece of loot should be completely random as far as stats and rarity go, why have a random loot system at all if your going to water it down with fixed stats, cd project red made this mistake in cyberpunk 2077, and it's 2.0 update ruined the game and made every gun of the same name exactly the same, completely gutting the uniqueness from loot in the first place, either go all In on random loot or just don't have it
The penalty for dying in torchlight 2 sucks just losing a little gold this game has no challenge you can’t lose anything important diablo 2 did it better the only fun way to play torchlight 2 is playing is veteran+hardcore

Torchlight 2, Wolcen, Grim Dawn, Titan Quest, Sacred 2 best single-player I played so far... Diablo 2 even the fact I played as a kid fill like crap by today standards... Never touch diablo 3 having all the others options so cheap or even free (muahahaha). Worst thing about D2 is the need to delete a char to fix the mistakes, this doesn't make sense and that's the reason why we all end-up using an editor. The more you grow the more you master all weapons/skills, is common sense but the system doesn't make sense (except if it was hardcore or something). Same happen with Torchlight but the problem is so big they developed nice editing tools to fix it. Wolcen best graphic, Grim Dawn more complete single-player experience, Torchlight family friendly cartoonish Diablo, titan quest a more open diablo 2 using old 2d sprites graphics same as Sacred.

a lot of the lead creators of D1 and D2 created TL after Blizzard North disbanded

who the hell plays Diablo for the story? I mean it was kinda OK, but for the most part, it sat quite comfortably in the background, where it belonged

Torchlight 2 is fun as anything. £15 quid is worth it. I prefer it to diablo 3. Plays more like D2.

I love torchlights art style, which is actually very similar to diablo 3, and animated games always age much better than realistic games, and there was always something about diablo 2s loot system that just rubbed me the wrong way, i cant hoard loot to mass sell or dismantle it once i return to town due to the lack of storage space, leaving 90% of the loot on the ground just hurts my soul, and i dont play free to play games anyways but even if path of exile was a premium game i have the same problem with their loot system as well, on that front games like diablo 3, wolcen and inquisitor martyr do it much better

Go hit the button, his explanation about NG+ difficulty is objectively wrong and he clearly didn't play more than just several minutes in that mode.
NG+ offers multiple new dungeons as well as an endgame raid dungeon. Veteran and Elite difficulties are especially fun to play, there is a hardcore option that's nightmarishly difficult and fun, and there are even more item types in the end game which he didn't list as he clearly didn't play that much.

I enjoy playing D3 more but I really love and adore Torchlight 2 PLUS for playing with friends and family them picking up Torchlight 2 is a cheaper easier option for them to think about and pick up to play. In a perfectly world you WANT to buy and WANT to pick up both. However for those whom either hate Blizzard (an who can blame you these days) you can get a GREAT title in Torchlight 2 for pretty cheap.
One thing I definitely should've mentioned is how affordable this game is for what you get. Definitely high value.
@@TheSuperRetroBros Agreed Path of Exile is ok but the cash shop is pushed too much in the face for me to ever reccomend it to anyone but the truly broke. Then I recommend Torchlight 1 and 2 (3 kinda is scaring me a bit. Any chance you cover that coming up?) and then the best of the genre but the most pricey for the best version of the game at 30 or 40$ for console or pc is Diablo 3 which I have loved an adored. An yea the value for the 15 to 20$ Torchlight 2 is is phenomenal. Plus it is a great game for the casual gamer to evolve into other games in the genre like D3 an others.
It's like they remade Diablo 2, but took out all the annoying stuff from that game. Almost everything I hated from D2 was removed in T2. Love it.

Shared loot completely ruins playing with Randoms, unless I'm playing with friends shared loot is always a bad thing, but even with friends there's always that one guy who just tries to grab everything, shared loot can completely ruin the experience, I always look to see if a game has instanced loot and if it does I buy that game lol

Yes, and No. I have so many Diablo-like games on my Xbox that I can't get myself to play any of 'em for more than a short amount of time because I'm always like "but I have these others I could play..."
I have Diablo 3, Torchlight 1 and 2, like 3-4 Van Helsing themed Diablo-like games, a Warhammer game, Vikings Wolves of Midgard, and most recently 'Shadows Awakening', as well as Path of Exile.
I've played all but two of them for like, a couple hours each. I always turn it off because I can't figure out which one I want to actually stick with. I start Torchlight, remember I have Diablo 3, swap to that, remember I'm a little ways into Victor Vran and swap to that, then like 3 days later I swap back to Torchlight. Like, I dunno which one's considered the best, I dunno which one is actually worth spending a long time in.

I enjoy Torchlight 1 back when it 1st came out, aPRG was rare and barely existence back in those days, so anything to quench the thirst. The art style was fine for a bit, but old and bored duing the 2nd game.

Aside from what others have mentioned, the video was a bit messy. You switch between talking about Diablo and Torchlight so quick sometimes, that I couldn't always tell what game you were talking about. At one point you went immediately from talking about Diablo's skills and stuff, to talking about difficulty and classes. And having never played Torchlight, and only playing a little bit of Diablo 3, it took me a good minute or two to realize you were suddenly talking about Torchlight 2.
Why torchlight 2 need to care wheter it hold up to other series?

skip to 2:10 for TL. TBH I played TL on 360 but quit, it's just too cartoonish while feeling the diablo mechanics underneath the varnish. Quite a disconnect. Of course I'll get TL2.

I love LoD and hope to see the day it gets ported to Lite. But the devs that made the heart of LoD tick didn't do so well on TL1 and TL2 wrt the graphics, lore and sound department, as well as the level design.
So what good were these LoD devs actually? The loot system. Yes the loot system is there in TL2. Gems and sockets. But that's all, and it just is not enough.
I tried to like TL1 on x360 and TL2 on Lite, but just failed.
Say what you will but d3 on lite has more variety and a deeper lore than TL1 or 2. The maps of TL2 are always the same. Added difficulty feels pointless. TL2 (the demo) feels pointless from start to finish. D3 is just as pointless, but doesn't FEEL pointless. It feels amusing. For a TL3 to come close to LoD the aforementioned parts need fixing. NPCs with voices.
LoD was created in that one magical moment where all the talent combined was there to deliver LoD. It will never happen again, and for that we are just stuck with D3, and DOS2.

One of your "but"'s is that you didn't like the Dwarf aesthetic because it wasn't the Diablo last chapter aesthetic? Really? I'm allowed to have my own opinions on the game's style, theme, and overall presentation - no matter how flawed they may be.
My major point with the "too much like Diablo" and then seemingly wishing it had certain aspects of it is simply this: It seemed that the game relied too heavily on Diablo nostalgia in certain areas, and then went to the other spectrum of ARPG of being too soft and too different.
There IS a middle ground somewhere. Maybe someday I'll be able to put it into words better. However I appreciate your comment.

Dude lol, This game has NG+ and NG++ ect ect. Ontop of being able to choose your difficulty at the start to cater your playthrough to how you want to play, the game ALSO has the hell, and nightmare modes from diablo 2, it's just named more simply. How did this get a thumbs down?

I would go as far as to say that the thematics of Torchlight vs Diablo are so far off that I cannot see it that way.

There's nothing worse than fixed stats in any type of RPG, but especially in ARPGs, every piece of loot should be completely random as far as stats and rarity go, why have a random loot system at all if your going to water it down with fixed stats, cd project red made this mistake in cyberpunk 2077, and it's 2.0 update ruined the game and made every gun of the same name exactly the same, completely gutting the uniqueness from loot in the first place, either go all In on random loot or just don't have it

Never touch diablo 3 having all the others options so cheap or even free (muahahaha).
Worst thing about D2 is the need to delete a char to fix the mistakes, this doesn't make sense and that's the reason why we all end-up using an editor. The more you grow the more you master all weapons/skills, is common sense but the system doesn't make sense (except if it was hardcore or something). Same happen with Torchlight but the problem is so big they developed nice editing tools to fix it. Wolcen best graphic, Grim Dawn more complete single-player experience, Torchlight family friendly cartoonish Diablo, titan quest a more open diablo 2 using old 2d sprites graphics same as Sacred.
