Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is a standalone game that takes place before the events of Gloomhaven. The game includes four new characters - Valrath Red Guard (tank, crowd control), Inox Hatchet (ranged damage), Human Voidwarden (support, mind-control), and Quatryl Demolitionist (melee damage, obstacle manipulation) - that can also be used in the original Gloomhaven game.
The game also includes 16 monster types (including seven new standard monsters and three new bosses) and a new campaign with 25 scenarios that invites the heroes to investigate a case of mysterious disappearances within the city. Is it the work of Vermlings, or is something far more sinister going on?
Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is aimed at a more casual audience to get people into the gameplay more quickly. All of the hard-to-organize cardboard map tiles have been removed, and instead players will play on the scenario book itself, which features new artwork unique to each scenario. The last barrier to entry - i.e., learning the game - has also been lowered through a simplified rule set and a five-scenario tutorial that will ease new players into the experience.

Quackalopes Gloomhaven One Shot play through from over a year ago was the first game play I ever watched. I loved it and I can’t wait to see more.
Just started JotL myself, playing Hatchet, and I'm loving it. We just beat scenario 5 today, I hope you enjoy playing it!
Somewhere in the middle. The difficulty ramps up real quick, especially the last few scenarios.
And the game gets really repetitive especially when its already really difficult to level up.
Though yeah its fun for a while.
I have played through the campaign solo and really enjoyed it. I soloed with Red Guard and Hatchet. The intro scenarios are fantastic, the book system is convenient . This is a great introduction to Gloomhaven!
@Shira You might want to check out the Hatchet. Some of his later cards allows him to attack with the bottom action as well. Also a lot of one time use "attack multiple times" abilities.
My 4 player group completed this game. One of the best board games I have ever played. We started playing its big brother recently!
Hopefully you have the app or those 4-player games may take forever!

As others have recommended, Gloomhaven Helper is a MUST. It removes a ton of the administrative fiddliness, and let's you focus on the fun. The other nice to have, again as others have mentioned, is the Foreteller narration, as it adds professional reading of the flavor text.
Can't recommend these enough. Get those... Now!

Yep. Saves ton of time.
I have been playing the Red Guard, I really like him and like his playing style.Stick with him for a bit longer. His upgrade cards will let you choose if you want to be more melee or ranged or both. If you want to be shield heavy so you can soak up loads of damage, or if you want to be fast, move around the board and hurt things. He will still feel like the core character but you should be able to tweak him to your liking.
Me and wife had Hatchet and Voidwarden! We loved it! :3

I dig game plays and gloomhaven has always held interest for me.
I've only seen two of the characters so far (about 16 missions into the campaign so far). But they are amazing! Just so wonderfully evocative and fascinating!
EDIT: I realize the story in Gloomhaven has never been the selling point of the game. But I like it quite a bit now. It is more of about building a universe than a narrative - which works for a campaign game I feel. Also, the writing is VERY good. Surprisingly so. I've played my bit of terribly written board games, and this one is one of best I've seen.

Given the size of deck and number of cards and number of dupes of a given card a decks mathematical randomness may be greater rather than less than a six sided die.
But something about drawing a card or token feels less random than a die roll.
But in the end you don't draw cards. You need to solve a "puzzle" by optimizing the use of your cards and rests. Felt very euro-ish
Please tell me you have a Hatchet in your group. That was my character and he was really fun.
Gloomhaven is much more tactical tan many other Dungeon Crawls.
I do not play original Gloomhaven because setup and teardown is a pain and because the campaign is extremely long and I do not have the commitment for it.
Jaws of the Lion, on the other hand i a much better product, it is user friendly and the campaign has just the right length.
I hope hope they make a small box standalone Frosthaven game just like this one.

While I'm very interested in watching Jaws of the Lion content, I don't want to until I get to play my copy (thanks Covid). Just be aware that there may be some people that will want to watch your content later once they've experienced the campaign for themselves...
It is a great game. Unfortunately, my friends bailed after scenario 6.
You chose the two hardest/weakest characters to play. So if you enjoy this game after this ... you’ll love the rest of the characters. Though the two do have a synergy that works well. Once you both get to level 5 you’ll really enjoy them more.
JOTL getting surprisingly tough. Of course losing is half the fun though.
After having played some 15 scenarios, the card play frustrates and bores me to tears. I have a talent to pick the wrong cards for each scenario (movement when all I need is attack, attack when I need movement), and the choice simply isn't fun anymore.
Also, I hate that certain characters will always have a higher initiative, which makes the red guard always go before my Hatchet, and often negates the actions I wanted to do before I can even do them. So the semi-communication part bugs me as well. Not to mention the fact that leleing up goes so much faster for certain characters but is much more rewarding for others.
You know, I started to kinda hate Gloomhave, and we haven't played it in months, after playing it almost daily at first. The first 5 scenarios certainly aren't enough to get a good overal impression. Curious to see how love or frustration for the card play pan out.
Maybe the game with the best tutorial ever and a high production value....but I'm the wrong guy for that game. Never passed scenario 9. Started it...read the mission goal....was bored by the same goal over and over again....never touched it again since then.
JOLT and gloomhaven in general just wasn't for me. The puzzle dungeon crawler aspect really hurt my brain. I have chronicles of drunagor now and that game has been so much more fun for me!

Not a fan of this game. Want to like it but it just crawls and lags. Got it cheap at target. Never play it. Way to tedious set it up so many times and then put it away before playing. Boring
