@Kenny Eaton we are the virus. We are the only ones causing pollution and litter. I see it all the time whether it's those juul pod things or masks and gloves, it's disgusting. And these people don't stop to think that those gloves and masks might be infected and someone will have to deal with them eventually. But it won't be them so they don't care. I'm glad you're not touching them.

My first ever gear , 42 and 1/2 teeth, lol. Yes I hadn't clamped properly. Did it on a Harrison L5 with a Harrison indexing head and overarm , cutter in the lathe chuck , vertical slide with the indexing head on the cross slide. Hope the guy in Ireland I sold it to 15 years ago still has it. Great channel.

Gday Stefan, that’s interesting that the gear cutter still worked on a gear quite a bit small then the cutter I designed for, I’ve been looking at those single hole counter sinks and thank you you answered my worry, I think I’ll go the the cheaper 3 flute counter sink, that’s about all my budget will cover, thank you for sharing another great video, I’m always learning something here, please stay safe, Cheers Matty

20:33 freaky, the cutter looks like it's spinning in the opposite direction of everything else. I guess the diameter of the thing makes it line up in a weird way with the shutter speed/framerate of the camera compared to the rest of the mandrel.

How can I tell that Stefan’s not thrilled with this job? Rare record number of “okay’ish”’s in this video. Still beautiful work. I always love the UA-cam camera captured looking finishes in steel. Shiny, sparkly, colourful, never any scratches or apprentice marks. I wish I had the opportunity to work with steels more often. Most of the parts I see (home shop - small customer parts) are generally oddball stuff. I don’t generally get to hog off material.
Sometimes I go back and watch older videos from Adam just to enjoy watching some 4140 fly off at mind bending rates.
Good to see you, Stefan. Keep up the bunker videos, and sunshine coffee pictures.

Thank you for using metric. I didn't swear once during this video. No stopping and reaching for a calculator to convert some £%*# stupid random imperial fraction into mm. Surface speeds in m/s, runouts in microns, gears in modules.
It's so relaxing to to hear Stefan using those newfangled late 18th century metric units.
After watching so many American machining videos, I had forgotten what it was like to simply watch and enjoy, rather than having my thought train run off the rails every few minutes with phrases like:
"Now, for a quarter twenty, your standard tap drill is a number seven, which is exactly midpoint between thirteen sixty-fourths and three sixteenths."
WTF does that mean?!!! (I haven't made this up by the way. It's from "Adam Savage's Favorite Tools: Woodworking Thread Taps"). And no, please don't try and explain, I'm not interested.
Keep living and working in the late 18th Century Stefan!

Nice heads up on the countersinks. I'm using a small milling machine and when using the 3 flute evenly spaced countersinks I get horrible chatter. I have a small 9mm Dormer that always works nicely for some reason. Now when I take a closer look...what do you know... uneven spacing on the flutes 👍👍 Guess I'll buy a larger one of those. Thanks!

At 21:00 I can see the gear profile is wrong on the third cut. I've made mistakes like this many times myself cutting gears. Another way this can happen is if the vibration of the cutter causes the nut on the end of the cutter holder to become loose. Then the cutter starts to drop. In this case it may also start to precess as there is space between the cutter and the holder. I always use a tail stock. Cutting gears if it can go wrong, it will.

I've seen a four tooth gear cut. On top of that it was actually made as a cutter to be used in a Fellows Gear Shaper to cut either an internal gear or a spline. On a 30:1 gear bobber the change gear set-ups unual to say the least. Similiar to when you needed to cut a 10mm lead on your Vertex Rotary Table

Yesterday I made my first EVER gear. As it seems, the problems involved do not disappear even by a long exposure to the trade. Mine had 23 teeth in it and as this was my first, I was extra/super careful and got it right first time.
Luckily, my milling machine does not have a quill, it is a Schaublin SV-51 :)

  • @Duraltia
    @Duraltia 3 роки тому

Not too familiar with the runout measurement thing ( never done it but I get its purpose ) but wouldn't it help to angle the gear at like a 45° angle towards the direction the runout needle is pointing as it would give you a wider surface area to measure the runout? I'm pretty sure it would also change the behavior from a down-up-down to an up-down-up one ( or rather down-up-down-up-down ) 🤔

Would it be better to have an arbor for slotting? It just needs a nice table like the mill. Are you worried about wearing out the gears in the mill handle. Creating backlash. Or is it easy to replace these parts as they wear?

    • @StefanGotteswinter

No worries on wear/tear on the mill - Doing heavy milling with extended quill is way worse than that bit of linear motion with the load almost in line with the quill.

    Hello Stefan,
I enjoy your how-to videos very much; they are among the very best, in my opinion, on UA-cam regarding Feinmechaniker work. Is the term Feinmechaniker still in use? In Canada we'd use the term Instrument Maker, which is a subset of Tool & Gauge maker.
The steel you used to make the pinion gears, was it specified by your client? If not I would recommend a steel known in North America as "1144" or "stressproof". Its mechanical properties are equal to or slightly better than that of 4140 HT&SR (heat treated and stress relieved) while being much, much, easier to machine. Also gives a better surface finish.
If you make many gears I'd recommend that you locate a small GAUTHIER hobbing machine. I used to cut gears for models using the home made circular rack type tool and was sick and tired of the indexing, to say nothing of the back and forth feeding on my small, manual milling machine.
In the winter issue of Digital Machinist is an article describing the conversion of that 1953 vintage hobbing machine to digital electronic gear box, which makes tooth count selection quick and easy. I purchase this machine, plus a tin can full of hobs, at a very reasonable price some years ago.
My son needed a six, or seven, tooth pinion (I forgot the number!) for a project and this worked out very well indeed. Because of the severe undercut with such low tooth count I told my son to use aluminium bronze for that pinion, which is an exceedingly tough metal to machine. Worked very well indeed.
I still have a small all manual shop in which I occasionally build stuff that interests me.
    Greetings from Canada. Wolfgang

Stefan was that 9 tooth gear profile shifted? I have been studying gear design during the lock down.

My take on this is that stefan found this old tony's video and came to show him how to do it.

Hi Stefan, your videos are very educational and valuable! I purchased a Bernardo Profi 550LZ lathe, the chuck runout is 0.03mm. Is that acceptable? What is the runout on your lathe chuck?

    • @StefanGotteswinter
      @StefanGotteswinter  4 роки тому +2

0,03mm directly in a 3 jaw chuck without doing anything to it is perfectly fine.
The sixjaw is a bit of a cheat, as the runout is adjustable ;-)

Hob cuts True involute form. Your cutter makes composite form, flank is radial. ( rack form has curved tooth form )Will run fine together , ok for change gears. Not so good for high speed or power. For change gears , maybe only 3 cutters needed ?

Hi Stephan. I always enjoy your videos and lean a lot. At about the 35 minute mark, you show us a slotting tool made from a piece of high speed steel silver soldered to a solid carbide shank. I'm wondering why you soldered the high speed steel on and didn't use the carbide of the shank to form the cutting edge?

I have a model helicopter with a 6 tooth (!) pinion on the motor. The tooth shape is funny so it can mesh with the mating gear, one wonders if it would work at all if it weren't for said gear being made of soft nylon.

In my experience, whenever a subsequent machining is necessary on a gear, which teeth are already cut, the proper way of holding it is exactly on the pitch diameter. Since this is impossible, the solution is to prepare a split collet with ID holding the gear with roll pins of equal diameter between the teeth.

Hallo Stefan, gibt es eigentlich auch youtube-Kanäle wie deinen, Tom Lipton's, Renzo Renetti's oder Abom auch auf deutsch? Habe bisher noch nichts gescheites gefunden. Schon jetzt Danke!

Derek Greenhalgh, very carefully... actually Tom Lipton did a video on the geometry and sharpening of those.
