Just battled this on a 1977 F150. I figured out to use a long bar clamp to push the shoes and everything together. So much easier.

Yep..,shoes are reversed.

all you have to do is adjust the brake shoes inward and the drum will go on easy.. and by the way, you are putting the shoes on backward. the short shoe always goes on the front.
