    Just a heads up that you are the reason the new phone I bought two days ago is a Pixel 7 and I used your video to install GrapheneOS on it, simply and no fuss. Graphene is actually such a pleasant experience with no drawbacks from the stock os, if anything I'm gaining on battery life, no distractions or bloatware and a newly gained peace of my mind over privacy and security. Your videos rock and I really wanna thank you again for the knowledge you share so well!!

    Another very well done video with the all important view of the actual phone, which will prove extremely helpful to those new to switching to GOS. Also great important mentions of updating Android prior to running web installer, ensuring OEM unlocking is available prior to purchasing a used phone, confirming a proper cable and web browser is used for web installer, verifying the hash, and encouraging donations! Keep up the good work!
    Completely unrelated, but the #1 most frustrating thing I find about using AOSP/GOS is that there is no decent replacement for the seamless sync/backup of encrypted Contacts between the phone and a non-Google email provider. It is hard to believe this has not been sufficuently addressed by any private email provider. Mail Fence comes close, but they don't encrypt their contacts. Posteo also comes close, but Posteo doesn't successfully implement/import Google Contacts labels/groups. Sadly this is the one and only thing that continues to keep me connected to Google.

    @SideOfBurritos regarding "Update your device - 02:58"
    Fyi: as you already mentioned, it is suggested to update a device prior to installing GrapheneOS. However, to save time (~2h+ or more), our webusb installer does all that automatically and certainly does not take as long initially.
    Great video and excellent coverage of many important points explained in this video! Thank you Josh!

    Thank you for this. Its been a couple years since I originally installed Graphene on my Pixel 3XL, which just recently bricked out of nowhere. It gave that old phone such an extended life. I got hung up on the Windows driver part when trying to install on my new 7a. For something like that, Im surprise the documentation doesn't highlight that issue a little better by either a bullet point, or bolding, etc...

    [2] Thanks for the quick and detailed response to [1]. As you suggested, I rebooted into bootloader and cleared cache, then restarted from "Download release'. This step didn't seem to do anything: it showed a full blue progress bar immediately. So I went on to "Flash release". This ran with progress notifications for a few minutes and then stopped at the same place as last night. "Error: Bootloader replied with FAIL: Invalid command update-super:super:wipe". The phone looked the same as it did for [1]: "Reboot system now" in white on blue, with maybe three lines of text following. I used my old phone to photograph this just in case it might be useful.
    Then I tried yet again. Rebooted into bootloader and cleared cache. This time "Download release" actually did something: or at least, the progress bar took a few minutes to fill up the slot from left to right. Just as it reached the right-hand edge, it gave this message "Error: Failed to execute 'transaction' on 'IDBDatabase': The database connection is closing."
    So that's where it stands...still no joy. Any suggestions for a next step? 😵‍💫

      Hmm, I can't find the original comment, so I don't know exactly what I wrote/asked. 1. Different cable 2. Does your computer have more than 4GB of RAM? 3. Your old phone, is it Android? You can connect a USB cable between the devices and try the installation from your old phone's browser.

    Great video, thanks. I did a lot of os swaps on my old phones but couldn't remember everything and I didn't want to screw up my new P7 Pro. I could not get Chrome to work. It unlocked bootloader in Chrome, and I could download the image, but I kept getting the error saying I had to download an image first when clicking on flash. I disabled all extensions and only had Chrome running with the Graphene tab and it would still give the error. After about a dozen attempts I tried it in Edge and it worked first try.

    Hey, I had a question. Is the Pixel 7's face unlock supported in Graphene OS ?

    • @sideofburritos
      @sideofburritos  2 роки тому +2

      They're still undecided about it:
      ===
      We might not add Pixel 7 face unlock support partly because it's much lower security than Pixel 4 face unlock.
      Pixel 4 had dual infrared cameras + dot projector + flood illuminator which provided a more secure approach than a fingerprint scanner. Pixel 7 approach is far worse.

  • @JohnSebeny
    @JohnSebeny 2 роки тому +2

    I've been debating on getting a Pixel 7 (to get away from my OnePlus 8T). Haven't used a custom ROM in years, like OG droid days. I know the whole point of GrapheneOS is to get away from Google and their services. But what if you need to use some? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of this ROM? I've also heard banking apps don't work well w/custom ROM's. How does it work w/Graphene?

    • @sideofburritos
      @sideofburritos  2 роки тому +5

      The last Android OS I used before GrapheneOS was CyanogenMod. After that, I switched to an iPhone for years, then back to use GrapheneOS. So, I can confidently say, it's come a LONG way from the custom ROM days. The terminology has evolved as well, so instead of the 'hacky' ROM's we used to use, they are now full-fledged OS's.
      That's an impression most people have of the project, but that's not exactly the goal. This comment sums it up well, "'degoogling' isn't the priority for the project and is a misnomer. Happening to start from a position of no default connections to Google nor having their proprietary apps installed by defauly is a Bob Ross-ian Happy Accident for those of us looking to reduce and restrict our exposure to BigG." - discuss.grapheneos.org/d/1420-google-play-store-and-degoogle
      If you need to use Google and their services, GrapheneOS provides a great option for that compatibility. Their implementation with Sandboxed play services installs them as standard apps, vs typical Android OS that has them installed as highly privileged system apps - grapheneos.org/features#sandboxed-google-play. You also have the option to install them in a separate user profile (that's the setup I use) so that only the apps in that user profile have access to them. You can also 'end session' on additional user profiles, which turns if off, so you know for certain those services are only running when you need them. This video goes into a bit more detail regarding User Profiles - ua-cam.com/video/20C0FD7mGDY/v-deo.html. This one I cover play services installation - ua-cam.com/video/SZ0PKtiXTSs/v-deo.html.
      Even if you install Play services on your main owner profile, the implementation GrapheneOS has is still MUCH better than using any other Android device. For banking apps, here's a list of tested banking apps - privsec.dev/posts/android/banking-applications-compatibility-with-grapheneos/. GrapheneOS has top-notch compatibility with banking apps. I probably biased, but I would highly recommend you try it out with the Pixel 7. Hope that helps!

      For games you can choose from PUBG, COD mobile, Fortnite and Genshin impact, with FPS meter and compare them to the stock os. What @maxmustermann7365 about the difference in the actual phone hardware. 6a is a significant value for the price.
      Regarding going from stock Android OS -> GrapheneOS and the camera, you have the option to install Google Camera and have the same quality/options as stock Android OS. Therefore the battery should be on 100% over hours during sleep, which would decrease battery health quicker than necessary.
    Charging and unplugging before sleep is possible but inconvenient with 10% battery consumption per night on a Pixel

Here is Spirits post, which is the same issue I am at with my Pixel 7: I did everything and now in fastboot mode it only says "restart bootloader" and not unlock bootloader. What did I wrong? For me: I have the following options: Restart Bootloader, Recover Mode, Rescue Mode, Bar Code, Power Off, and Start. I did not get the option for Lock the Bootloader. My cell also shows Fastboot Mode. I love your guidance very detailed and concise, and do hope you can advise us.

    Ok, GMS sandboxed install direct from GOS is more than fine but google play store? Why? I don't understand why you don't recommend Aurora instead. Very straight forward tutorial btw..

    • @sideofburritos
      @sideofburritos  2 роки тому +5

      1. Play store does more than provide a front end to download apps. It provides additional functionality that some apps needs to run. So even if you don't sign in to it, it may be required by some apps, so they work correctly. Aurora store doesn't replace that functionality.
      ----
      The Play Store provides many services used by apps including Play Asset Delivery, Play Feature Delivery, in-app purchases and license checks for paid apps. The Play Store app is also the most secure way to install and update apps from the Play Store.
      ----
      source: grapheneos.org/usage#sandboxed-google-play-installation
      2. I tried to explain my reasoning in the video, but that recommendation is for those that are new and hesitant to use GrapheneOS. Someone that is new to the OS and might stop using it if it's too difficult of a switch, they're better to just use Play Store and then explore other options at a later time once they're comfortable. I've received numerous emails from individuals that were overwhelmed by all the recommendations (F-Droid, APK Download, Aurora Store) that they wanted to go back to their old device and give up. My recommendations at the end of the video are for those individuals.

    [1] I got to the stage of clicking the Flash Release button. The installer then did a lot of things, giving a running report. Now the installer says "Restarting device..." (again; it said it maybe 2 or 3 times before). This display hadn't changed in the last half hour. Over on the phone I see "fastbootd" in red letters, followed by several lines of gold text, and then "reboot system now" in white letters on a blue background.
    So I guess this means my earlier attempt to download a driver for fastboot from Windows Update was unsuccessful...? (But when I return to Windows Update, it no longer offers the Android option, so I can't try it again.) What's the best action now?

    • @sideofburritos
      @sideofburritos  2 роки тому

      If you made it to that stage the drivers are all good on windows. At the point you're currently at use the volume up/down to select "reboot into bootloader" (I forget the exact wording). If you don't see that, press the power button to reboot the device then hold the volume down to get back into the bootloader interface.
      Disconnect the phone from the USB cable, clear your browser cache (this will clear the downloaded release). Now go back to the web installer, reconnect your phone, skip the "unlock bootloader" step because it's already unlocked. Start with the obtaining factory images "Download release" and try the process again.
      If you run across the same issue again, repeat the above steps. It sounds like something is happening in the install process and it's not completing fully.
